JayDeeParticipantMy possible Halloween costume is as a Narcotrafficante, or drug lord from a Central/South American country. I would really like to get a Guayabera shirt for the role, one of those white/off-white shirts with vertical embroidery and four pockets.
I am thinking something like a suave cross between Izzy of Miami Vice and Hugo Chavez.
I have tried Milagros, El Gringo in PPM, and another latino place in the down under. I also called Zamboanga to no avail.
Does anyone know of a place in White Center or anywhere in Seattle that might have these types of shirts? Yes, I could order them online, but there is no time. I’d prefer something new, but will check the Value Village in Burien if no one offers inspiration.
I am also looking for plastic fake gold plastic handcuffs, but the shirt is my key goal. Thanks for your help.

AimParticipantWe looked high and low for a Guayabera (also known as a Mexican Wedding shirt, and worn by Mexicans, Filipinos and a few other groups for weddings and special occasions) over the last 3-4 months for our wedding. Luis wanted to honor his heritage and wear something that meant a lot to him.
However, we searched every little shop we knew of, and Googled like crazy, but still found nothing.
The one place you may find something that’ll work for you, as it’s just a costume and not an actual wedding shirt you need, would be the Plaze de Pulgas (translates as flea market) on Ambaum at around 115th-ish (?) It’s by a McDonald’s and right next to the sign that welcomes you into White Center on the south end. Before Berry’s BBQ, and on the same side of the street. They have a TON of shirts, and a lot of vaquero clothing, and will likely have something that will work for your costume.
Hope this helps.

mellaw6565MemberCall Alaska Airlines – the *uc*ers lost my bag on a direct flight from Florida to Seattle last year and in that bag were two custom-made Guayaberas for my partner & I that were made at the original Guay. tailor in Little Havana in Miami (he’s been there for 50 years and made shirts for many presidents, etc…). They cost $200/piece and it was the one souvenir that we saved up for on the trip.
You can have the Guayaberas if they return the rest of my bag!

FullTiltParticipantI bought one at JC PEnny’s. Who knows if they still have them, but it was part of their Havana collection.

AimParticipantDAMMIT! FullTilt we were >this< close to coming into your shop and asking you if you happened to know where to find one, as you know WC so well. Wish we had. Alas, we’ve found something else for him to wear when we get hitched on Saturday.
But next time it crosses my mind to ask you about something, I’m gonna do it. I should’ve known! :)

sohonyusaMemberTry the Antique Mall of West Seattle. I was there a few weeks ago and they had a few “retro” Guayabera shirts. Maybe they still have one! good luck in your search.

JayDeeParticipantThanks to all, though I am afraid the shirts in the luggage are not in the cards. I will likely make the rounds of JCPenny, Freddys (My sister says they have “tacky mens shirts”.),Value Village, and Plaze del Pulgas on the way back. I need a XXL so the antique mall might be a last-ditch option…Thanks.

JayDeeParticipantJCPenny came through. The salesperson, Nancy, was really helpful. Oddly enough I went with black because it doesn’t clash with Khakis and there is no need to wear an undershirt. The service was similar to Nordies, which was an odd experience at a lower middle class retailer. I did experience the usual surliness at Sears, which was sort of refreshing (OK, I was looking for cheap bling, but still a customer…).

cjboffoliParticipantmellaw6565: Care to share the full-name and/or contact info of that Little Havana tailor?

FullTiltParticipantGuadaloupe near Goodwill on Ambualm had some, or the Tiende thingy in Pike Place Market. There is also a mold maker that is in Port Townsend that could get them to you in time. http://www.mexicansol.com
I have the serious Mexican envy. Ask me to find the nearest shop for kilts and your on your own.

mellaw6565MemberCJ – Las Casas de las Guayaberas in Little Havana, Miami.
Here’s a link to a newspaper article about the “King” from 1993:

He and his family are still there and it is fascinating to watch his seamstresses make your sure on the spot.
Next time I’m wearing the damn thing on the plane!

ellenaterMemberThanks Full Tilt. You sure play a mean pinball…

cjboffoliParticipantThanks mellaw6565. Once I get down there I may eat too many medianoches to actualy FIT into the shirts they make for me. But I guess I’ll take my chance.s

KenParticipantKilts are easy to find in Seattle.
The link below autoplays their demented commercial so turn down the volume if you’re at work :)

mellaw6565MemberCJ – when you’re there – hit “El Pub” – one of the oldest cuban restaurants. Fabulous sandwiches, chicken/rice/beans, etc……. Look for the statue of the rooster out front. Very casual and great expresso window in the front.

cjboffoliParticipantmellaw6565: Thanks again. Actually, I’ve had the Cuban version of espresso. They call it cafe colada. It is made by adding heaps of sugar while its brewing and they serve it in tiny little paper cups like the kind that they dispense pills in at the hospital. Not really my thing.

ellenaterMemberAgreed. I’ve only seen one fellow pull it off and he is Artis the Spoonman and he is craaaaaazy. If he were sane it would not have worked at all.

maddyParticipantThis post is 10 years old! Why is it here?
December 12, 2018 at 11:44 am #935739
WSBKeymasterBecause our forum goes back to 2007. Topics are inactive unless something new is posted – as you just did.

miwsParticipantWSB, I noticed this thread was bumped up earlier this morning, much earlier than when maddy posted. I think it was after I first got up around 5:00 am.
Anyway, it showed a “last post” of some time I don’t recall overnight but then opening the thread, the last post was JoB’s from 10/31/08.
Might this be a case of a spammer/bot bumping it up then being deleted? Or, perhaps, somebody posting a possibly “legitimate” post that got hung up in a filter?
I notice this quite frequently here in the forums with threads current and old. Also, it *seems* the a post from earlier in the day will finally show up later in the day.
