1. Natura Pet Products is voluntarily recalling specific lots of dry pet food because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
2. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.
3. Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
4.These products were made in a single production facility during a two week window in December 2012.
5. The affected products are sold in bags through veterinary clinics, select pet specialty retailers, and online in the United States, Canada, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Costa Rica. Product expiration dates range from 12/17/2013 – 1/2/2014. Product was distributed by Natura Pet Products between December 18, 2012 through March 15, 2013.

dhgParticipantThe joke’s on us. We pay a lot for “natural” pet food thinking it’s so much better than the cheap roadkill pet foot only to find they source cheap crap for “premium” and pocket the difference. The only thing healthy about their food is the profits they make.
I’ve taken to asking about sourcing. If part of the kibble comes from Diamond Foods in South Carolina, it’s garbage. If part comes from China, it’s garbage. I was told by one clerk that we should buy pet food sourced from Canada because they have stricter quality control. Then I watched the Canadian show Fifth Estate and learned that Canada HAS NO STANDARDS and smart Canadians buy US pet food.
I think there are just two ways to go: Buy the cheap crap and accept the fact that it will shorten your animal’s life or ask questions at the pet store and find food that is sourced from a single, US site and hope they’re ethical.

SueParticipantdhg, those Natura brands were always good quality foods. However, I understand that they were bought up by Proctor & Gamble 3 years ago, so I’m sure things have changed in the last 3 years.

dhgParticipantI’m going to go out on a limb here and say pet food stores that advertise themselves as natural and /or organic are taking advantage of a vulnerable group. We will pay more to take care of our animals and, until recently, we’ve trusted them to stock premium food. But now the truth comes out that they stock pricey food, not premium. They need to do their job and select the good stuff, not the garbage. That means ferreting out the sources and staying on top of how the food is made. If they can’t do that, it’s better to save the money and buy Purina.

anonymeParticipantSue is correct. These used to be safe, all-natural pet food choices until they were bought out by P&G. The recipes and ingredients changed immediately; smart pets wouldn’t touch the new stuff, and smart owners wouldn’t buy it. Reputable, responsible natural pet food stores, such as Next to Nature, not only informed customers of the change but refused to carry Natura after the takeover. Other ‘natural’ pet food stores are not as diligent as NTN about researching product sources and making sure they’re safe and wholesome. Mud Bay, for example, still carries Natura. IMHO, NTN can’t be beat for well-informed customer service and premium products. And of course, there’s always some responsibility on the part of the consumer to know what they’re buying and ask the right questions.
Orijen is probably the best premium food now available, aside from raw, and it is available at NTN. I mix it with Darwin’s, as I can’t afford to feed a pure raw diet, and I’m too lazy to make my own.

dhgParticipantNTN is good about some things but when Taste of the Wild was recalled due to a Diamond Pet Foods additive that was killing pets and sickening people, it should have been the wake-up call to consider sourcing. The claims on the packaging are not enough. You have to look at the sources. There’s too much money to be made selling low-quality garbage at premium prices and stores like NTN should be weeding out the bad ones.
