squareeyesParticipantWhile I agree with JoB about shunning, should the forum proceed with with the ignore user feature, I will elect to use it against one person, seemingly one of the most prolific contributor to the forums and, for me, the single most abusive and vitriolic and wholly without internal filter. I get no enjoyment or enlightenment from that person’s rants — enjoyment and enlightening being the reasons I read and participate in the forum. So, until such time as the ignore feature is activated, I do what WSMom does, and avoid most topics that shows this person as the most recent poster. So let the ranter blithely continue without this unappreciative audience. Just my two cents.

WSMomParticipantHey there squareeyes:
Unfortunately, my method isn’t working very well since recently many posts have been reactions to that one person’s rants/posts. To read some of the responses to these posts makes me feel very uncomfortable, like how I feel when I see those poor people on the Jerry Springer Show. At least with Jerry Springer, you can change the channel quick and move on. When JoB, who I admire, wrote about shunning being wrong, I had to reconsider my tactic. After some reflection I’ve decided that I will simply refuse to feed the negativity, but not shun. I think there is a difference.

AnonymousInactiveI’m curious if anyone can explain how the blocking mechanism works.
If you block a particular person, does that restrict just that person’s posts? If you have blocked someone, are you not going to see their side of a conversation? Can someone please explain how the blocking works.

ErikParticipantNewRes –
Yes, that’s how I’ve seen and used the ‘ignore’ feature on other forums. One forum I go to calls it the ‘bozo filter’. It can be a bit confusing though when you have a certain person on ignore while others are conversing with them…you are only hearing one side (but being half deaf I miss most of what people say anyways and am used to filling in the details on my own). I doubt if I’d ever use it here as this place is tame relative to most.
March 3, 2008 at 9:11 pm #616293
AnonymousInactiveok, thanks, Erik, for explaining that. It does seem that it would be confusing to only see one side of a conversation. I don’t think I would use it either.

JoBParticipanti don’t believe in shunning.. but i do believe in quietly and calmly explaining why something offends… however today my patience has worn just a touch thin.
I have often used the tactic of simply never responding to anything but a civil post in the past… but have evolved into a combination of explaining and then ignoring if i realize i am talking to dead air.
the thing is.. there are a lot of people who read and don’t post. So if you let that kind of nastiness just hang out there in cold air… you lose a lot of people who would be interested in respectful discourse.
it’s a difficult balance.
i would probably not use a bozo filter but i certainly could understand the choice to use one.
and.. i think you wouldn’t lose much content on the thread if you chose to because someone will always respond to the bozo.
ok.. i confess. i can never resist:)

AnonymousInactiveJoB – You never should resist. Everyone enjoys your posts. You’re the voice of reason around here!
See what happens when you leave for a week?
In fact… Haven’t seen TheHouse around for awhile.

March 4, 2008 at 12:08 am #616297
AnonymousInactiveOh, JoB…. I think that “hehehes” were banned.
March 4, 2008 at 12:15 am #616298
JoBParticipantand where am i supposed to get my fun now?
March 4, 2008 at 12:19 am #616299
barmargiaMemberLOL…I don’t think they were banned, but maybe not so many in a row :)
March 4, 2008 at 12:25 am #616300
JoBParticipantbut i chuckle a really long time…
you guys should see me pecking away at my keyboard laughing and chuckling most of the time…
i really am having too much fun:)
March 4, 2008 at 12:36 am #616301
barmargiaMemberLOL, okay fair enough then. Chuckle away :)
March 4, 2008 at 12:47 am #616302
AnonymousInactiveMaybe everyone could try and use the standard “LOL” in lieu of “hehehehe” and no one would get offended.
March 4, 2008 at 1:03 am #616303
barmargiaMemberI was just being sarcastic, I’m not really offended by “hehehehe”.
March 4, 2008 at 3:37 am #616304
JanSParticipanthehehehe…I see what I have started…JT…are you out there?
March 4, 2008 at 3:38 am #616305
JanSParticipantand , yes, I miss The House, too…I’ve noticed that he/she (I guess I just assume “he”) has been MIA. Maybe he just doesn’t like us anymore :`(
March 4, 2008 at 4:12 am #616306
AnonymousInactiveFor those of you enjoying a good “laugh” at my expense, I would like to amend my original comment. Heheheh no longer bothers me. I am now offended by people sending me cash.
March 4, 2008 at 4:18 am #616307
barmargiaMemberOh well I will show you JT, hold on and let me get my checkbook
March 4, 2008 at 5:44 am #616308
JoBParticipantJT.. i wish i wanted to offend you that much…
but glad you have a real good grasp on what’s important:)
where should we send those checks?
March 4, 2008 at 6:02 am #616309
JoBParticipantmaybe i will have to reconsider shunning:(
March 4, 2008 at 6:37 am #616310
JoBParticipantI apologize for my immature behavior.
I didn’t have any chocolate so missed my fat pills… but ate a good dose of humble pie (non-fattening) and recovered my equilibrium:)

SueParticipantI’ll admit that I enjoy watching the complete meltdown of society on internet forums, email lists, etc., in general (not just here). I don’t contribute to it (at least not intentionally), but there’s something quite amusing to me about watching it from the sidelines. I guess that’s why I like pathetically bad reality TV too. There’s this website called Survivor Sucks (started out with the Survivor TV show but now covers reality TV in general and general topics). The tone of that site is to totally bash everyone and everything in as non-PC a manner as possible. I consider this enjoyable reading. What this all says about me, you can decide. :)
So, am I offended by the name calling and immaturity on the forums? Not particularly. I wouldn’t be upset if it left, and I generally won’t instigate it, but if it’s there, well, whatever.

WSBKeymasterThe person who was being discussed here has been deleted from all currently existing user accounts because of the post that kicked off a thread titled “My Say,” which was that person clearly trying to pretend they were somebody else. That won’t be tolerated here. I will not allow any registration of anyone from that IP address but of course there’s always a chance they’ll try some other way; please be on the lookout and flag me – this problem already has taken too much time away today from this site’s main purpose, which is to find and present West Seattle news and information.
March 4, 2008 at 11:52 pm #616313
JoBParticipantlowanbeach.. i for one agree with you.. think i will take my dogs for a walk…
