AlkiKmacParticipantOur beloved Myrtle passed away yesterday. Rescued from a garbage dumpster in Oregon, we adopted her 08/18/2007, expecting to have her only a couple of years. She outlived expectations and gave us almost 4 years of love, laughter, and wrinkles. She came with an unknown history, but slowly learned to love and trust, and to realize dogs can have great lives.
Myrtle caught the travel bug, going with us to Walla Walla, Whidbey Island, Leavenworth, Ocean Shores, and Centralia. She won Most Beautiful Pet in the first (& only) West Seattle Pet Fest. Her favorite local activities were walks at Alki Beach, watching kids in the wading pool at Lincoln Park, and holding court for her adoring fans at The Beverage Place Pub. Her best friend and ultimate love was Ryan. She adored him and he, her.
Myrt was well known in West Seattle. Several times we’d be walking and pass someone, a complete stranger, that would ask “is this Myrtle?”. Then they’d explain that they heard about her from some friend of a friend. Amazing. She used to love lounging on the balcony at our Alki apartment, watching the folks go by. Every so often you’d hear someone say, “hey, there’s Myrtle”. No one knew our names, but they knew hers.
Our “Dumpster to Diva” had many nicknames: Myrt, Pooter, Missy Moo-Moo, Chunky Butt, Baby Girl. After losing an eye we called her The Big Winker, and The One Eyed Wonder. Whatever we called her, she was love.
Adopting a older dog was a risk, but Myrtle fought for every moment of her new life. She didn’t want to miss a moment. She lived until she died, with us by her side.
We’ll miss you so much, Myrtle. Now that you’ve crossed the Rainbow Bridge you can see with two eyes, chew with healthy teeth, run and play without pain.
We love you, we miss you, and we honor you. Rest in Peace, baby girl.

charlabobParticipantI’m so sorry for your loss; I’m sure your eloquent tribute to Myrtle will result in WSB forum readers thinking about adopting older dogs (or cats) and even doing it. So you-all continue to save lives. She sounds like a sweetie.

funkietooParticipantAlkiKmac, thank you for giving Myrtle a loving, fun, wonderful retirment home. She was a delight to see and visit at the Beveridge Place Pub; always willing to accept pats ‘n’ pets; and it was obvious how much all three of you loved each other.
My heart and thoughts are with you.

JoBParticipantAlkiMac…
no matter how old they are when they find us,
or how little time they spend with us,
even though they fill our hearts with joy,
our furry family members leave a huge hole in our lives when they move on.
I still miss every furry friend who has left me behind.
