So let me get this straight. NR is lambasting Obama for his support of the Akaka bill because it doesn’t promote unity? And yet Sarah Palin supported Alaska seceding from the US. How can we believe that the GOP ticket is country-first when she doesn’t love this country enough to want to stay in it?

I don’t know much about the AIP, but it seems your “facts” are, as they say, wildly exaggerated:

The chairwoman of an Alaskan political party that advocates a vote on the state’s secession from the union said Tuesday that she had been mistaken when she said Gov. Sarah Palin was a member of the group.

On Tuesday night, Ms. Clark said that her initial statement was incorrect and had been based on erroneous information provided by another member of the party whom she declined to identify.

After checking the party’s archives, Ms. Clark said that she could find no documentation that Governor Palin had been a member of the party. She said Ms. Palin attended the party’s 1994 and 2006 conventions and provided a video-taped address as governor to the 2008 convention.

Ms. Clark said that Ms. Palin’s husband, Todd, was a former member of the party.

Here’s Governor Palin’s shockingly friendly taped address to the 2008 AIP convention.

that doesn’t do well to refute the fact that she is at least associated with them….and spoke at their convention…and this all happened – what- yesterday? that they are backpedaling on this too? sorry, I guess my “facts” are a day late.

Sarah Palin seems to have lived her life in small town white america. If she has no idea how most people in our country live how is she going to represent us to the world? I cringe when I think of people around the world having George Bush to look at who we elected to be our leader. He has trouble delivering a speech without mispronouncing words. Sarah Palin has allready followed his footsteps with nucular!!!! Can we get someone in the office of President/Vice Pres. with the ability to represent us as an intellegenteducated country.Please. Not just big bomb war bullies. Obama and Biden both have law degrees. What Biden lacks in eloquence Obama more than makes up for it and what Obama lacks in tenure Biden makes up for they compliment eachother. McCain has my respect for his military history but I kinda thought the same of Cheney before he showed us what he was really all about.Sarah Palin would have my respect as the mayor of wasilla because thats her place not as second in command to a country she previously is rumored to want out of and I say rumored to be factual but her husband who she quote “is the man I admire most in the world” (in her acceptance speech on friday) was a member of until she wanted to run for govenor.!!!!!!!!!!Yes she won but anyone but the incumbent would have.

HP, totally agree with your comments, and it’s why McCain and Palin are not getting my vote. The USA is the laughing stock of the world because we have an imbecile as president. International statesmen Obama and Biden would do much to restore our respect in the world stage. We don’t need another bully president with scores to settle. The stakes are too high.

    “Statehood

Please see the goal of the AIP.

Alaska has never been an equal state.

Feds create and enforce laws which are only in effect in Alaska

Many in the AIP support INDEPENDENCE. Some support COMMONWEALTH and others support STATEHOOD.

It is the AIPs wish to get a true plebecite according to international law, only legal Alaskan citizens, it is in the language of the people, federal military and their dependants are not legal citizens and will not be allowed to vote in this plebescite “- from the Alaskan Independence Party site. The majority of their party is for secession. Palins husband Todd was a card carrrying member of the AKIP until 2002.

Maybe you might wonder what happened in 2002?? Oh yes that is the first year his lovely wife Sarah chose to run for office as a Republican.

Jenny what about her in person visit in 2002 or her other video conference in 2006 or better yet her speech in the 90’s…

HP, I agree with you as well.

Ace i am glad that you finally brought up the big point of this election. it is past the point of what is best just for me or for you but what is best for our country. Our country needs a leader who is going to mend those broken relationships throughout the world that our current administration has so expertly deteriated.

Perhaps Sarah could put a UN hockey team together? She is touting herself as a “Hockey Mom.” Maybe we can recover our reputation with the world that way? ;-)

I will watch her speech uncomfortably tonight. It will be interesting if she will address anything that has come up of her past and her present experience.

Interesting take on the baby’s daddy being invited to the convention tonight-

“Perhaps I’m focusing on an irrelevant issue, but the presence, or non-presence, of Johnston on the stage tonight strikes me as important. It’s one thing for delegates to be understanding and compassionate about the fix these two teenagers have gotten themselves into. It’s another to actually celebrate it. And, given what we’ve learned in the last few days, if Johnston is up on stage with his girlfriend and the Palin family, and Republicans are wildly cheering, it will certainly look like they are celebrating this situation.

I don’t usually engage in these scenarios, but I’ll do it here. If the Obamas had a 17 year-old daughter who was unmarried and pregnant by a tough-talking black kid, my guess is if that they all appeared onstage at a Democratic convention and the delegates were cheering wildly, a number of conservatives might be discussing the issue of dysfunctional black families.

    From Time:

“Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. “She asked the library how she could go about banning books,” he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. “The librarian was aghast.” That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn’t be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving “full support” to the mayor.”

    Lordy Lordy Lordy –

New Resident, please stop belittling yourself, you have the patience of a saint. You never quit and you are honest and conduct yourself (your responses) with integrity. You have an open mind. You stand out.

“Acemotel- So in effect the Republicans will be nominating this eminently unqualified woman to the PRESIDENCY OF THE UNITED STATES “

Actually as far as her experience Alaska is the first line of defense in our missile interceptor defense system.

The 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard is the unit that protects the entire nation (REPEAT ENTIRE NATION) from ballistic missile attacks. It’s on permanent active duty, 24 hours a day, unlike other Guard units, which means that Palin has unique experience among governors.

Palin is regularly briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counterterrorism.

She’s also the commander in chief of the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF), a federally recognized militia incorporated into Homeland Security’s counterterrorism plans.

Palin is privy to military and intelligence secrets that are vital to the entire country’s defense. Given Alaska’s proximity to Russia and the presence of Fort Greely, the home base of the 49th Missile Defense Battalion, there’s no doubt she has security clearances we don’t even know about.

Yes please, let’s make this about her experience!

She has more executive experience than the Dem ticket combined so please, let’s keep going down this road:)

    JoB “New Resident..

Obama was nominated after 20+ years of public service.. first as an organizer, then as a state legislator and last as US senator.”

Obama was a junior Senator from a state for about sixteen or seventeen months before he decided he was experienced enough to be president. Sarah Palin has been the Chief Executive of a state for nearly two years… before running as Vice President.

“Villagegreen “However, can someone please explain to me why you believe Sarah Palin is qualified to be President of the United States”

Hello Villagegreen – I think I have answered this with my comments above but safe to say I’d rather have her in the top position over Biden who has been consistantly wrong on most everything.

JenV “BTW, I would rather live in a DEMOCRATIC society than your Republican “utopia” any day of the week.”

My dear you live constitutional Republic. Do you understand this?

JanS “Please…some concrete examples? That a pretty general statement.” JanS – Google is your friend. If you are unable to find some instances then I will assist you.

“JoB “Tonya42 is that egg on your face?”

No but I see a few feathers sticking out of your mouth, is it crow?

    :)

Tonya42- repeating idiotic talking points doesn’t make them true. Please see some quotes regarding the “foreign policy credentials” of the Governon of Alaska. What you wrote is completely false, and doesn’t pass any sort of vetting test, well maybe McCain’s vetting process.

“Maj. Gen. Craig Campbell, adjutant general of the Alaska National Guard, considers Palin “extremely responsive and smart” and says she is in charge when it comes to in-state services, such as emergencies and natural disasters where the National Guard is the first responder.

But, in an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday, he said he and Palin play no role in national defense activities, even when they involve the Alaska National Guard. The entire operation is under federal control, and the governor is not briefed on situations.”

    >>Palin is regularly briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counterterrorism.

Being briefed (if she even is – I don’t see any evidence that’s true) does not = experience, and certainly not international experience. She may (or may not) have some knowledge of the missile interceptor defense system, but that hardly qualifies as international experience. I’m talking about things like knowing the economic and political systems of China, the EU and countries in the Middle East, knowing (at the very least) the names of their leaders, cultural and social influences, demographics, etc. I would hope our VP has done some international travel to see other races, other religions, other landscapes. I would hope she could understand where the United States factors in to the global economy. It sounds like you took the proximity to Russia to heart, Tonya42, but in my mind that doesn’t make her an international statesperson. Judging from her known positions, she appears rather quite the opposite.

It seems whatever anyone posts and is not inline with your thinking you are snide in your return. This is MY perception and no I am not attacking you, so please don’t think that. You believe in Palin and that is fine. However, just like those who like Obama/Biden we must look at the good and the bad, then see where the balance sways.

Palin is personable but as far as her readiness and her being able to seperate issues Im not so sure of. She was in the PTA, then voluteered part-time as Mayor of a small town she grew up in, then she ran in a race that was fraught with scandal from the previous official. Palin has had her own ethical issues that are still coming to light.

Again you will believe in what and who you choose. I will not belittle you nor anyone who thinks differently than I. I hope I am granted that same respect. I have seen a few posters (liberal and conservatives) almost sound “elitest” in their responses towards others.

You can elect to deny what is reality I don’t mind. But to deny her credentials is silly.

A sidenote: Sarah Palin only got her passport in 2007 and that was for her trip to Kuwait. I don’t think that is a positive. A stateperson who hasn’t traveled to different countries and experienced different cultures??? Not good if you are to be Veep of the USA.

Cnn was just showing a story about how great Sarah Palin is and they interviewed a woman from her church who was saying that she has such great respect for sarah for deciding to keep and raise her downs syndrome baby!!!!!!!!! DUH!!!!She is Pro Life what else would she do!!! she is against abortion….Are they this desparate for supporters that they have to go to her church to get them!!! if you went to my church the people would say nice things about me too.. so what. Ask her about a little middle east history..national economy…what the world thinks of us… thats what i want to hear. not about how sarah is a hunterfisherwoman or played high school basketball, I am just going to go out on a limb here and say most women in america arent going to relate to SP on the hunting fishing platform. I wish i could see what the people who think she is a good choice see.

I think it’s strange that Obama may be considered inexperienced, but he tends to inspire hope even in people that don’t believe in his politics. This woman however, does not inspire that type of positive feeling from the other party (mostly because I think she’s rather divisive.) I think that’s what we’re really arguing about here, is personality and outlook. I would have to say that the juju surrounding Obama is much better for whatever reason and it’s based on solid reason not just bleeding heart liberal cheerleading. To demean it as such is ignorant, I believe. It’s obviously real and a force to be reckoned with, no one is denying that.

Personally I’m finding it a bit hard not to be offended by McCain’s choice. If he wanted to pander to the women voters and the Hilary voters, couldn’t he have picked someone more experienced? It seems like an insult to me and more calculating than well thought out or deserved.

Interesting that CNN’s Cafferty File just announced that they have received more than 30,000 emails since Palin’s selection – MORE than Hurricane Katrina. The emails are apparently all over the board – much like this blog.

CNN also confirmed that it is her PRIVATE attorney who has been granted $95,000 in government money to defend her actions in the Trooper scandal. Also, they confirmed her husband’s membership in the AIP.

I suspect that many other rumors about her will be confirmed in the next few days. CNN reminded me that there has not been a change in the VP pick post-convention since Hubert Humphrey had to dump Eagleton in ’72.

For now, I’m going to watch her tonite and see what she has to say and how she says it. It should be quite interesting.

    Mellaw6565,

I hope I’m surprised by her speech, by addressing the most asked questions about her, the economy, the investigation, her husbands affiliation with the AIP, foriegn issues, and so on and so on.

But I’m going to assume it will be a talking points memo.

I’ll be more interested in how long it takes for her to do a news conference without a teleprompter.

Also interesting that McCain’s camp is telling the “liberal” media to back off Palin. Firstly, I see ALL media investigating her background. And right they should, because…

    A) It’s actual news

    B) She’s relatively unknown to most people

    C) Voters have a right to know

I think the personal (“baby”) issues have received negative and surprisingly, very positive feedback. So, what’s the issue? Heck, this might even get people to actually WATCH the RNC.
