mellaw6565MemberHe wants an Obama-McCain View show/debate. That would be really interesting!
September 12, 2008 at 5:50 pm #638919
mellaw6565MemberHe’s defending Palin’s references to God – says many ex-Presidents have made the reference plus “In God We Trust” and that we are a special country based on Judeo-Christian values that believe that God has a plan for a greater world.
Yet, he says he believes in separation of church & state and when Whoopi pinned him down about all the other non-Christian religions and our government – he says everyone is entitled to their own faith but he prays everyday to do things that are in the best interest of the country. He says he’s imperfect and is one of those people that need spiritual guidance in his life, but doesn’t begrudge others who don’t feel the same need.

mellaw6565MemberTypical response on Sup. Ct Justices – says he doesn’t have a litmus test but would only appoint Judges that are strict interpretist – isn’t that the same as a litmus test?
He says Roe vs. Wade was the worst decision ever – social legislation from the bench (McCain got boos from the audience)
He says if Roe vs. Wade is overturned, than each State could decide for themselves.

mellaw6565MemberOMG – Whoopi got him to backtrack about original interpretation of the Constitution. He said that Judges should interpret the Constitution the way the founders wanted it to be interpreted – Whoopi said “should I be returned to slavery then” and McCain said “good point – I get what you’re saying”

HPMemberI just tuned in to see Cindy being introduced and interviewed and Barbara asked how many houses do you have and she basically told Barbara Walters that is not any of your business!!!! she said that is not a part of this campaign. But come on just answer and move on but I could care less if they had 20 homes I only want someone in that office who can get our country back on track.

mellaw6565MemberCindy McCain is on now – crowing about her husband as a “measured” man and “always puts many things above his own interests”.
Says she and John see “eye to eye” politically, including pro-life (except she disagrees with Palin that there are exceptions for abortion)
Says her husband will represent and include all people – including people that don’t agree with him. He says “people want us to work together” and he’ll appoint anybody, regardless of affiliation, to get the job done. He says that includes Hillary, who he considers one of the most influential Senators in Washington.

HPMemberAnd Elizabeth is just about to come out of her skin she is so tickled to be in his presence, Cindy may need to watch that :) Elizabeth is a much younger version of Cindy. just sayin

mellaw6565MemberShe won’t discuss their “housing” issues – she says I’m fortunate to come from a family that worked hard and it gives her the opportunity to help those less fortunate.
Ok – so can I have one of their houses then? As a teacher I’m definitely less fortunate that way.

mellaw6565MemberThey finished up talking about technology – do you think McCain knows how to use any of it?
September 12, 2008 at 6:06 pm #638928
RainyDay1235Member“always puts many things above his own interests”
Sure, Cindy can say that….Carol McCain not so much…
sorry, continue… :)

mellaw6565MemberOMG – Cindy said the “Russians are the bad guys” – with Palin’s comments last night we know where are foreign policy is heading.

RainyDay1235MemberJohn McCain: “I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself. I don’t expect to be a great communicator, I don’t expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need.” –New York Times interview, July 13, 2008
Seriously people?!?!

JennyMemberDrudge was linking to a 2000 feature on McCain from the NYT.
http://graphics.boston.com/news/politics/campaign2000/news/McCain_character_loyal_to_a_fault+.shtml
At the end it mentions why he has never gotten into using the computer much:
McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCain’s severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes…
Actually the whole article is illuminating. (Not necessarily in or against McCain’s favor, but interesting nonetheless.)

JennyMember> mellaw6565: OMG – Cindy said the “Russians are the bad guys” – with Palin’s comments last night we know where are foreign policy is heading.
Do you think the Russians have shown themselves to be the “good guys” lately?
(OK, calling them “the bad guys” may be a bit over the top, but then this IS the First Lady we’re talking about, not the President.)

JennyMember> mellaw6565: Typical response on Sup. Ct Justices – says he doesn’t have a litmus test but would only appoint Judges that are strict interpretist – isn’t that the same as a litmus test?
No, a litmus test would be if he said he’d only appoint judges who would vote a certain way on a specific issue – say, against Roe v Wade. Favoring strict constructionists is his judicial philosophy.

guidosmomMemberI am afraid.

mellaw6565MemberJenny – I don’t have the exact sites right this second, but there is ample evidence and testimony in the world community that Georgia, with the US’ complicity, started the conflict with Russia, not the other way around.
The US also been poking and prodding at Russia by posting banks of missiles in Poland near the Russian Border (supposedly to shoot terrorists)and by proposing Russian neighbors for entrance into NATO (not because those countries merit it with longstanding democracies, but just to encroach even more into Russia’s sphere of influence). We wouldn’t/haven’t tolerated Russia’s excursions into our Monroe Doctrine sphere of influence, so why should they be any more comfortable with ours?
I’m not a Putin fan and it is clear that Russia is sinking back into handpicked successors that are figureheads for more sinister organizations under the surface, but I think McCain and Palin are hawks and would continue this administration’s policies of bullying/throwing weight around and pre-emptive strikes based on fabricated intelligence.
In the end, it’s all about propaganda.
September 13, 2008 at 6:40 am #638937
mellaw6565MemberJenny – as a lawyer I understand the meaning of “strict constructionist”. If you know what the leading strict constructionists say, then you know that all of them are in agreement that Roe vs. Wade is a piece of social legislation that has no basis in the reading of the Constitution and therefore is bad law.
McCain knows this and wants Roe v. Wade overturned – the only way to guarantee that result is if he only picks a strict constructionist judge. Therefore to pass his litmus test you must be a strict constructionist.

mellaw6565MemberAlso Jenny – re: McCain’s inability to type on a keyboard: there are LOTS of disabled people who use computers on a regular basis! I think that report is a cop-out; he’s typical of his generation (my father’s) and technology scares him.
