happywalkerParticipantWednesday on my evening walk I saw 2 brown pigeons…one just sitting in the grass the other one with the same color was standing near it, almost protecting it. I noticed them, but continued on my walk. Well today in the same spot, driving by I saw the same birds in the same position…days later. This is up in HP 13th and Cloverdale. Not sure what to do? The on sitting in the grass looks normal, not in distress. Is this how pigeons die or???

Talaki34ParticipantI spoke with Sarvey Wildlife and they suggest checking to see if either bird is injured.
Pigeons don’t normally nest on the ground, but I guess some Morning Doves do. Again, it would mean taking a look see, If they are nesting, try not to disturb the nest itself.
The number to Sarvey Wildlife is 360.435.4817. They are open until 2000 hrs.
They have two drop points (Renton and South Seattle) if one or both need assistance.
If the birds are injured and you can coral them, I would be willing to drive you to one of the drop points.

hammerheadParticipantCall me if you feel they are injured or still there, I can check it out and do the rescue if necessary.

pigeonmomParticipantThey’re probably mourning doves and they will nest on the ground if they can’t find a suitable place up high.

mehud7Participanthappywalker-update please? I drove slowly one block in all directions from 13th and Cloverdale tonight but saw no signs of the birds.
May 18, 2013 at 4:42 am #790196
happywalkerParticipantI saw them both again today around 2:00pm then just came by ~9:30 and they are both gone. I’ll check back tomorrow. Goggled mourning doves they didn’t look like that, they looked more like mostly brown some white pigeons. Wow thanks for all of your help and information. WSB was the first place I thought of for help in this matter. You guys are great.

anonymeParticipantThe only other explanation I can think of is that one of the birds is a fledgling being chaperoned by it’s parent. Crow fledglings are the same size as the parents, so wondering if the same might be true for doves. Just a thought.

happywalkerParticipantJust another update, I swear we did not see them last eve~9:30pm, but they are both there again. One in sitting in the grass and the other is standing by almost protecting…they are NOT crows or doves. They really look like pigeons.

Talaki34ParticipantYou might want to take a couple of pictures. Maybe send the pics to the Audubon Society and ask them. You could post them here and maybe some would be able to identify the birds and then figure out if this is normal behavior or something to be concerned about.
This is a wonderful article about Morning Doves. Look at the nesting entry, it might give you a clue about this bird mystery.

mehud7Participanthappywalker-please email me with more precise location. I am headed that way in a few minutes.

happywalkerParticipantJust emailed you mehud, with an update.
May 20, 2013 at 12:01 am #790202
mehud7ParticipantI found them this morning. One has a leg injury. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) it is still able to fly, so I was not able to catch it. Both were fat and eating as I watched them. happywalker, I emailed you–please monitor. If the injured one gets worse, hammerhead or I can try to catch it with a net. They are very unusual looking, brown and white with very long tail feathers. Quite striking.

pigeonmomParticipantIs it any of these birds?

happywalkerParticipantNo pigeonmom they are pigeons. They were there all day today. One sitting one the parking strip and the other on standing by. When I went for my eve walk I saw them both fly away…but they’ll be back tomorrow. One sitting in the grass the other standing by.

hammerheadParticipantMost likely the one with the broken leg can’t land on a branch or wire. So not matter what, a cat or dog will get it.

amaliaParticipantLook up Eurasian collared dove; they are a non-native species that has been showing up in greater numbers here lately. Neither they nor mourning doves nest on the ground.
.
What does the leg injury look like?
.
You need both federal and state permits to catch these birds – I have both and will come look at them if they are still there (you may want to put them somewhere where a cat can’t kill them easily). Please don’t have someone who is not permitted or trained take them. Sarvey or Paws can take them if they are truly injured, or I can.
May 20, 2013 at 10:27 pm #790209
anonymeParticipantHW: just to clarify, I wasn’t suggesting they were crows, just saying they may have been displaying similar behavior. Pigeons and doves are in the same family, and pigeons are sometimes known slightly more formally as rock doves. Either way, I hope they’re rescued.
Occasionally you’ll see an exotic domesticated dove hanging out with our urban pigeons. I once saw a pure white one with feathered feet hanging out at Pike Place Market with the urban riff-raff.
