Looking to buy an ipod (my first)to download music and podcasts-a “shuffle” would be great. I’ll need your help getting started.

Buy one with the largest storage capacity you can afford. I made the mistake of thinking that 8 GB would be plenty of room and my iPod filled up quickly.

Unless you already have an iphone I would get the 32GB ipod touch. Internet, email (when in a wifi area) as well as music, video and of course a ton of apps from the app store.

I think a shuffle will disappoint, but to each his/her own. Take the time to go to an apple store and talk to an expert if you are confused by the choices.

Bottom line, you buy Apple and you will not be disappointed.

I generally agree with Smitty’s rec unless you cannot afford one. While Shuffles are cheapest ($59 to $79), there is no screen. It is really helpful to have a screen. I’d recommend the Nano if you can swing it. Slightly larger, and has a screen, and comes with an FM radio. Good luck.

Sansa Clip. It’s not an iPod….but you don’t need an iPod to play music. I have an 80g iPod that is normally hooked up to my car or my home stereo. I use the clip because it’s tiny, has a nice screen and it’s mobile….not to mention, it’s cheap.

Since the shuffle has no screen you have to organise it on your computer. Once you sync with a computer they are married for life. No wandering allowed! There may be weird work arounds on this but I have not investigated too much. I won a old model shuffle a while back and it works fine but I think I would look for something a bit more open if I was buying a player plus something that would let me reorganise the play list. Anyway if you’re set on a shuffle just go to the apple store. Apple pretty much lock their prices with other retailers so their are no bargains out there unless maybe selling off older models

$100 iPod Nanos are the featured offering on Woot.com for the next 24 hours or until they sell out, whichever comes first.

I’d also recommend taking a look at the Creative Zen. If you’re purely looking for a large storage MP3 player and something to store your podcasts on they can be very good. I’ve had an older version for a while, cost a fraction of the iPod and works like a charm.

Never had any luck with iPod’s myself.

I just bought a 3rd Gen Nano with 8gb on ebay. It was like new. I paid only 80 bucks. I love the 3rd gen as it is small and square, and still has a screen. 2.5″by 2″. Good Luck.

Hopey, my bank account may never forgive you — I’m the proud owner of a woot.com purple nano (they really do keep selling until they’re out)so I no longer have to wander through the bob’s music lists to get to mine. AND every morning, after WSB, I trot over to woot to see what’s on sale. Thank you? :-)

    Psst….

    http://wine.woot.com (updates twice a week)

http://kids.woot.com (if there are kids in your life)

http://shirt.woot.com (warning, the women’s sizes run quite small – I am curvy and cannot fit in their women’s XL unless I’m deliberately cultivating that too-tight-tee look)

And just wait until they do another woot-off! Very small quantities in a constant rotation. I highly recommend logging in as soon as you see it’s a woot-off day, because in the time it takes you to log in, the item you want may sell out. Woot-offs usually run for two days straight, and may or may not include the other woot sites.

Another tip: check the site(s) before bed instead of in the morning. Woot rotates items at 10pm local time (midnight Central time), and the really popular items can sometimes sell out before morning arrives here.

    You’re welcome! :D
