pigeonmomParticipantDoes anyone know anything about a local driving school that caters to Asians?
(NOT a slur against anyone btw as there are NEVER any people of any other race in the car that I’ve seen.)
My car has received $1000 worth of damage by one of their students. They left a note and paid for repairs with cash and no insurance involvement at their insistence.
My current problem is they keep coming back to practice parallel parking with my car.
I and my housemate have repeatedly gone out and told them to not practice in front of our house and it keeps happening.
The person who hit my car was not very forthcoming with any information about who is running this school and I no longer have his phone number.

karenParticipantTwice I’ve had my car hit and both times the car drove off. Both times it was a similar type car and both times it was while trying to parallel park behind one of my cars while there was a whole lot of free areas to park elsewhere.
I’ve gotten to the point where I just go stand on the parking strip right where the parking is happening and look at the driver. Yes, it’s a little passive aggressive but I have tried to flag the vehicle down and get no response. There are no markings on the car saying that it’s from a driving school. I do believe it’s from a school though since this has gone on for a couple of years and seems to be fairly cyclical.
I KNOW it’s a public road and anyone can park there. I KNOW that you’ve got to learn somewhere, I just wish it wasn’t my car that was being used as a practice cone!

MBParticipantI know the car you are referring to. I think they do have a sign on the side though. We see them all the time in Highland Park on our street. I have never had any damage done to my car, but I am always worried that may happen (as I would be with any student drivers regularly practicing in my neighborhood). Its a real bummer that your car was hit. And for the record, you are correct that the occupants of the car are always Asian (before anyone assumes you’re being racist).

pigeonmomParticipantThere are no signs on these cars.

MrJTMemberpigeonmom – We have a large construction cone left by a contractor that I would be more than happy to give you to put in the street.

MBParticipantSign or no sign, I believe we’re most likely referring to the same car. I could be remembering wrong, thought I saw a magnetic sign on the side before…maybe not. Next time I see them I’ll pay more attention. What you described above is exactly like the car I see almost daily for the last few years…all Asian occupants (irrelevant other than for description), practicing parallel parking/driving in the Westwood/Highland Park area. Anyway…hope they don’t hit anymore cars!,

sillygrrlParticipantThey are on my block almost daily, however we all try NOT to park on the street for fear of being hit. One of the instructors actually flipped my nieghbor off! They have been using Thistle and 34th to back around a corner, takes brains to do that on an arterial. I checked with my neighbor and she does not know the name of the company either. My best advise is that if you have to park on the street, to put cones around your car (one each, front and rear street side). I would take Mr. JT’s offer.

pigeonmomParticipantMrJT, I will take you up on your offer. Thank you. Where can I pick it up?

MrJTMemberPigeonmom – I may have to run to Target tonight, would you be available to meet there ?
February 10, 2011 at 6:32 pm #716804
pigeonmomParticipantMRJT, I am out of town until Sunday the 13th. I can meet you anywhere you say before 4:15pm.

HelperMonkeyParticipantthis might be the place? it’s on Fauntleroy.

looks like they post class schedules online, too, so you know when to stand out in the street with a camera to catch them in the act. :)

pigeonmomParticipantafaik, Puget Sound Driving Academy has signs on their cars.

pigeonmomParticipantForgot to put a huge, attention grabbing ‘RANT’ in front of my subject title. :-(

valvashonParticipantSee them all the time in the late afternoon when I’m picking up my kid from school. Seems a variety of different cars are involved- yesterday’s car was a plum colored mid 90’s Geo Prizm, for what it’s worth. I could post other descriptions or even pictures of the cars, but I’m not sure what it would accomplish. I wonder if they have a business license- they are out there far to regularly to be just a friend teaching another friend how to drive.
February 12, 2011 at 5:50 pm #716809
redblackParticipantkaren, if you stand there making an obscene gesture while glaring at them, you’ll no longer be passive/aggressive.
you’ll just be aggressive.
and they probably won’t park there any more.
there. two problems solved.

QueMemberI see this frequently in my neighborhood (Westwood) and always assumed that it was an informal driving teacher in the Asian community here. Sort of a word of mouth kind of thing, since there was no signage on the cars.
Though if they are running into cars while practicing parallel parking, that really does bring up other kinds of issues…
February 12, 2011 at 8:46 pm #716811
JanSParticipantI’m thinking that maybe it’s not the best driving school? And not wanting to bother insurance for $1000 worth of damage? Hmmm…wonder if they even have insurance….
February 20, 2011 at 7:50 pm #716812
pigeonmomParticipantThey are out there today. I just shooed them away from my car. 34th Ave SW between Thistle and Barton is their practice area.
