I’m a former West Seattle resident, now a few thousand miles away. For research on a book I’m hoping that someone can tell me when the K-Mart on Delridge (I know, technically Webster) closed, and when West Seattle Precinct opened.

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hi Chris.

I used to have such a great memory for stuff like this, but don’t as much anymore, so I don’t remember exactly when K-Mart shut it’s doors.

However, according to King County Parcel Viewer:

    http://www5.kingcounty.gov/parcelviewer/viewer/kingcounty/viewer.asp

K-Mart sold their building in April 2003, and the Police Precinct had been built in 2002.

Hope this helps, and maybe someone else will have a better recollection of how long the old K-Mart sat vacant, before construction of the Home Depot building.

i moved to west seattle in late 2004, and the home depot had just opened, if i recall correctly.

gonna flag our esteemed and gracious editor on this and see if she or patrick has better recollection.

I think the Kmart actually sat vacant for a little while my guess is 2001 or 2002 for the kmart closing

I moved into my current home in January 2003, and I recall furnishing a good part of the house with things I purchased at KMart during their close out sales in the fall/winter of 2002. I think they were closed by winter 2002, though I’m not 100% on that!

I recall there was a “Dollar” store just to the south of the K-Mart. -or- did the “Dollar” store just take over part of the building after K-Mart closed? I can’t remember for sure.

Kevin, the dollar store was in the part of the building that had previously housed a grocery store.

Thanks everyone – that’s really useful. I always found the K Mart an awful place to shop, Target was way better.
