WEST SEATTLE WEATHER: Thunderstorms roll through

(Added: Photos by Mark Dale)

Yes, that was thunder – and a lot of it – rolling through the area these past few minutes. The National Weather Service says thunderstorms are possible for much of the afternoon.

Missed that one! I’ve only been here 34 years. Anyway, no power outages anywhere in the city so far.

Been that long? Lincoln Park was hit really hard. Huge trees uprooted with massive root balls lying on their side. One could hear all the damage being done from outside the park. Certainly not a day for a walk through the Park.

That storm did wild damage all over the west side of the state. Took a class from Jerry Franklin at UW (he was Clinton’s former forest policy advisor, instrumental in creating the Northwest Forest Plan, love it or hate it), and we went on many field trips. He pointed out astounding damage on the Olympic Peninsula from those storms, that was visible still decades later.

Drove back from Woodinville and caught in thunder, lightning, hail, and pouring rain on 405.

So great to finally get some much needed rain for our bone-dry trees! Cedars everywhere, including Lincoln Park, are dying because of the drought.  I think we’re more than 6 inches below normal for the year. Bring on the rain!!Remember that roads can be especially slick after such a long dry spell so take it easy out there. Please drive safely.

      Almost EIGHT inches below normal!

The airplane I was traveling in was hit by lightning from that storm. We were about 15 minutes from landing at SEA and belted in for the duration of the flight. There was a bright flash in the cabin with a medium bump sound. Passengers were instantly startled, looking around and asking each other- did you see that? I looked down the aisle and saw that the cabin crew weren’t reacting. Then the WiFi went down. Right after we landed, the pilot comes on and tells us we had taken a lightning hit, and we can tell our friends we were hit by lightning.

I actually enjoy thunder and lightening….when I’m safe inside.  Apparently a minority opinion.

Sorry, comment time is over.
