dufusMemberHypnosis can work for some people who are motivated to quit and are willing to make some additional changes in their lives. It is well known Nicotine is highly rewarding for most brains, so is hard to quit. It is certainly a strong physiologically based issue, your body gets dependent on the nicotine. There are also habitual, emotional, physiological, and psychological reasons why people have a hard time quitting. It is often described as a 3 headed dragon that you have to beat – cut off one head, and you still have two more to deal with.. so you have to cut off all three heads (emotional, physiological, habitual). You can’t just quit the habit of smoking after meals and in the car, for example, and expect to not have cravings because they are, after all, physiologically based cravings — withdrawal. So if you take a “quit smoking” medication or nicotine patch/gum, you are more likely to succeed — if you also change habits and fill in the emotional attachment by paying attention to your emotions instead of smoking to distract and deal. You can use the HALT method… H = hungry, A= angry, L =lonely, T =tired (so you say to yourself, when you want to smoke HALT!!! and you ask yourself “Am I hungry, angry, lonely, tired”? Then you don’t need a cigarette, you need a nap, food, friend, exercise…instead of smokes. Don’t give up, average attempts before success at quitting are around 7 serious attempts. Also, don’t set yourself up for failure by worrying about all the pit falls (weight gain, going crazy, getting nasty mood, unable to relax, unable to poop, unable to sleep, blah blah blah) Everyone who has quit has to deal with some or all of these things and they do, and you can too! Keep your eye on the prize, which is figuring out the real reason YOU want to quit smoking. Once you identify what it is you WANT from being smoke free, then you will truly be motivated for yourself.
Some possible good resources — I am not recommending or promoting, just know some folks who have had success:

cjboffoliParticipantI had a friend who quit last year with Chantix. She had been a smoker for 25 years and raved about how well she responded to that drug. She didn’t really experience any side effects. But some people do so be careful if you go that way. I know she had tried to quit many times before. The Chantix was the only thing that actually worked for her.

elikapekaParticipantI quit many years ago using a combination of hypnosis and behavior modification with Dr. Ron Singler who was with West Seattle Family Medicine. I believe he still practices with Highline, but he’s not at the West Seattle location anymore. I can’t say I liked him all that well as far as bedside manner (I don’t think I’d use him for my primary care physician), but I was amazed that after three visits I walked out and never had another cigarette. I did have the occasional cravings, and ate a lot of junk food for a couple of weeks, but whatever he did worked. And it was all covered by insurance.

SemeleParticipantI quit cold turkey myself 3 1/2 years ago, but my Grandmother quit, using hypnosis after smoking 30 some odd years. She has been a non smoker since, so it does work for some people. This was in California so no recommendation on a practitioner. Good luck! It’s one of the best things you can do for yourself.

Last year I had a post about weight, and your response was similar to your above post. You must have the will power of 100 people and damn next to perfect.
Yikes
My mom quit years ago after hypnosis, however the first time it didn’t work for her,the second time, with a different person, she quit. She had smoked for 40+ years.

velo_nutParticipantPerfect? No. But strong enough not to go buy smokes. Just don’t do it? How hard can it be?

shed22ParticipantClearly not a smoker, Nut.
Yikes, if you try hypnosis, please report back.
My dependence on the patch has become irresponsible. Looking for solutions.

casabobaMemberMy deceased Mother-in Law (86) successfully quit smoking using Hypnosis after smoking at least a pack a day for 50 years. It was her first attempt to quit smoking. She atteneded a seminar with 300 other people held in a large hotel ballroom.
I quit using Nicorette gum. After beating the ciggies, I got addicted to the gum. “A smart trade-off” according to my doctor.
Today, I remain addicted to neither after approximately 9 years.
As you already know, it is NOT easy but CAN be done. Good Luck!
