We moved into our house this past summer. When we moved into our house it was prewired for an ADT alarm. We have not activated it yet….my husband and i seem to be on two different pages as to whether an alarm lessons your chances of being robbed…what are all of your thought and experiences with home alarms?

It won’t lessen your chance of being robbed, but it may in fact lessen your chance of burglarized (sorry but a pet peeve of mine is people using robbed for when they mean burglarized).

Anything you can do to “harden the target” i.e. make your house less attractive to break into than your neighbors, does help. So start with good lighting, no landscaping which obstructs the neighbors or the police view of your property, decent locks, a big dog bowl by your back door, etc. and you make your house less of a target.

An alarm (one with signage) may also increase your odds for not becoming a victim, but nothing is for sure. You need to weigh the monthly costs of a monitored alarm versus how much safer you feel. Plus you may get a homeowners insurance discount for having an alarm.

Like everything else, it’s a trade-off of what is important to you.

An ADT (or other protection) sticker actually helps a lot. I’ve known people who didn’t want to go through the alarm activation mess — they assumed the sticker was working, because neighbors who appeard not to be protected were burgled and prowled.

Thanks JimmyG and charlabob. We just keep going back and forth…to actually activate the alarm would cost an additional $65/month (alarm and home phone system)…As newlyweds with a new house seems quite pricey. We just cant decide!
