helpful folks at Ercolini park today

Just want to send a shout-out and thank you to the people who helped me at Ercolini park this afternoon. I somehow managed to lock my 17 month old son inside the car, along with my keys, as we were getting ready to leave. A very nice lady loaned me the use of her phone to call my husband, and also encouraged me to just call 911 and have the police/fire come to open up my car. My son was freaking out, locked in the car, and I was sorta freaking out too, so I didn’t have the presence of mind to offer adequate thanks.

Thanks to the team from Ladder 11 who arrived fast and was able to get into my car quickly without leaving a scratch — and without breaking the window, as the 911 operator told me would be necessary. Thanks to the neighbor lady who was willing to drive me back to my house for my spare keys, even though it turned out to not be necessary. And thanks to the park mom who was so helpful and kind with her phone. I hope to see you at the park again so I can say thanks in person!

Also, thanks to the dad who thanked *me* for “bringing the fire truck to the park” for the kids to see. If my crisis helped make another kid’s day, then that makes me feel a little better!

Wow! A day earlier I heard a somewhat similar scanner call in another part of town, 4-year-old locked in car … with engine running! … police and fire called … and thought, how terrifying on multiple levels. Glad everything turned out OK.

Interesting because this exact situation happened to me recently (here in West Seattle). I called 911 & when an officer was disbatched, I was told PD & fire were no longer allowed to open vehicles, even with a child inside. They informed me it’s been a few years that this new policy has been in place…& they no longer even have the tools to open vehicles if they wanted to. My son was crying for nearly an hour while the officer contacted a tow company….cost me $75. Wish I would have received this kind of help!
