swimcatMemberAs other posters know, I’m always singing the praises of my heat pump. They are expensive, but if you don’t have natural gas to your house, you’ll be paying a lot for your replacement anyways.
Pros for heat pump: AC in the summer, which I thought was extravagant but it is SO NICE to have. SUPER low electric bills ($75/month to keep our house at very comfortable temps all year long for us and baby, plus all other appliances are electric). I view electricity as a renewable resource because of wind, solar and water generated power, so I like that more than using natural gas or oil.
CONS: upfront cost is higher.
Most people think we were crazy to install a heat pump, but when they come over for dinner on an 80 degree day they appreciate it. And during the winter, the auxilary heat rarely needs to kick in so that shouldn’t be a concern for you.
I should say my husband did all the research on the heat pump, but I’ll tell you first hand I couldn’t be happier with it. Good luck with your decision!

LSParticipantHi Ashley, I’m also investigating this option.
I think one of the questions is whether you already have gas service to your house or not. Connecting the gas line isn’t always costly, depending on what appliances you convert to gas within a year of the gas meter being connected. In my case, with the appliances I’ll be connecting, it won’t cost me anything to get the gas line connected…so I might go with a gas furnace and skip the heat pump.
Also, from what I’ve seen, the heat pumps are quite large units. Depending on how much yard space you have, then that might be a consideration as well.
Good luck!
