HPTMemberMy daughter will be attending kindergarten in fall 2010. Our assigned school is Gatewood Elementary. Can anyone offer any insight to this school such as class size, PTA or any such useful information? Especially from parents with children currently attending this school.
Also when is it possible to take tours of the various school that we may be interested in here in West Seattle?

QueMemberHi! My daughter is in 3rd grade there and we have loved our time at GW. Our PTA is quite active and we all help out at the school in a wide variety of ways. We fundraise to pay for an additional classroom teacher to keep our class size down (in the last few years it has hovered between 22 and 23) We have multi-age classrooms (K-1, 2-3, and 4-5), though they do split up according to age for some specific academic subjects like math or writing. We have a team teaching style, so 2-3 teachers work together with their classes. We use positive discipline and problem solving with relation to our disciplinary policies. We feel like we are a “Community of Learners”. I love it there, my daughter loves it there and I volunteer there extensively. Kinder tours are often in January, but that may be changed a little this year due to the changes that have taken place this year. I would be happy to answer any questions that you might have though.

kcMemberJust to clarify, Kindergarten and 1st grade are no longer multi-age inside the classroom at Gatewood. There are kindergarten classrooms and 1st grade classrooms. However, there is some ‘big-group’ time where both grades will be together, eg, songs and PE.
I have a 3rd grader and a Kindergartner at Gatewood. We’ve been extremely happy with the school, the staff, the principal and the community!

CroweMemberI also have a 3rd grader :O) Been going to Gatewood since Kindergarten and we LOVE it. Amazing parent involvement, the teachers are warm, dedicated and wonderful. Like Que mentioned, go to the tour when the time comes.

BlendParticipantI just posted my thoughts about gatewood on the other gatewood thread. It’s a great school. my son used to be bullied at other schools but not at gatewood.
