Ugghhhh!! Last night I purchased a sandwich at the Safeway (Jefferson Square) Deli. It was the only thing I ate that evening. About 3 hours after eating the sandwich, I became violently ill. I remained violently ill throughout the evening and early morning. I am certain it was food poisoning. Has anyone else had a similar experience at the deli? I did notify Safeway management and wrote an explanation of the situation, so they are aware.

Also call the King County Public Health Department – to make sure you’ve reported it in any other way that would be important.

My kid didn’t eat a sandwich, but became violently ill last night. Could be something going around…

I got really sick last year and talked to my local health inspector. She told me that food poisoning is really hard to track down because it is not what you ate a few hours before, but days before. That is why it is important to contact public health so they can track these things.

I hate Safeway, especially the junction store. I work in downtown and love the brand new IGA Kress on 3rd and pick up my items from them.

Timing of symptoms depends on the bug. With some pathogens, symptoms begin 1-2 hrs after ingesting the food.

Yeah, FullTilt I’m not so sure I agree with that info. That health inspector may have been referring to a specific pathogen. But the human body metabolizes food very quickly. There are a lot of evolutionary reasons why it makes sense for the GI tract to react to spoiled foods. toxins, etc. much sooner than that.

Actually — incubation times can vary from a few hours up to 5 days, depending on the organism. Like everyone else has stated, it’s best to report the info to the health dept in case others have also reported the same symptoms. It may not be concerning for a healthy adult, but can be life-threatening for children, the elderly, or the immunosuppressed.

Food borne illness is not necessarily caused by bacteria, either. Norovirus (the one that hits cruise ships and nursing homes frequently) is a very short-incubation intestinal that is often foodborne. I recall a birthday party in which the cake was infected; turns out the baker had been ill. Less than 24 hours afterward, all the party guests who had eaten cake were miserably ill, and some so dehydrated that they needed hospitalization. I know this because the health department called us to follow up after the party hosts gave them the guest list.

Oh yeah. I am not a Doctor or anything, I am just saying that it is important for you to contact Public Health if you think it is food related. That way they can see if there is a trend of people getting sick and then find out where it is coming from.

If human beings learned to wash their hands with warm soap and water at least twice a day, it would help eliminate a lot of the viruses on this planet. Wild animals are cleaner than half the humans here.

Or after using the restroom, at least.

But disease can occur with improper food storage & preparation, too. It’s not all attributable to human fecal contaminant.

    Ok, back to lunch…
