CMParticipantSo over the weekend, I had a nostalgia-attack; remembering the Falafel trucks that used to circle the campus where I went to college, and now, I need some Falafel bad.
Anybody know anyplace nearby that serves it?
They’re way better than taco trucks, trust me!

JEMParticipantI’ve never tried it, but Hallava Falafel has a truck in Georgetown. They are by the Corson Building at Corson and Airport Way. I think they may only be there Tuesday and Thursday from 11-2 or something like that. I’ve only ever seen them parked near Georgetown Brewing when they are not in service.

biankatParticipantI understood the Falafel Truck was moving/moved to Portland. CM, can you post whether or not you were able to secure the goods?

AimParticipantIf you’re not married to the idea of the falafel truck, Ali Baba on Capital Hill (middle of Broadway, across from QFC) has wonderful falafel. It’s a small, family-owned business, and if the older father is there, he likes to feed people, so watch out if you’re sitting too long — he’ll bring over things for you to sample… :)

JenVMemberOn another note, Falafel Jones would be the BEST band name ever.
January 19, 2009 at 10:27 pm #655505
austinMember^^ agreed
Mediterranean Mix on 1st in pioneer square also makes wicked awesome falafel and shawarma. God-awful location on weekend nights but a good spot for lunch or whatever any other time when you’re over in regular seattle.

guidosmomMemberI am not sure if they moved, but Kosher delight used to be good, they were by the flower shop on 1st AVE downtown, right by Pike Place. I think they might have moved though.
CM – When I lived in England I’d often eat at falafel trucks. Yummm… I’d love to find a good one too.
January 19, 2009 at 10:44 pm #655507
CMParticipantThanks for the suggestions.
Band name, that’s hilarious.
Oh great…now I’ve got Cheech and Chong’s “Basketball Jones” going through my head with new lyrics…..

pigeonmomParticipantKokoras has falafel as does Dino’s Gyros in Burien.

FullTiltParticipantOk, after reading this thread, I got a serious jones for Falafel. I was going to go to Zaina, which I think made the best sandwich in town, but they have sadly closed. SO after some searching, I found Mawadda Cafe in Columbia City. Really good falafel, and really amazing chai.
Here is their yelp reviews

I don’t think Dino’s has falafel though. I have been there quite a few times, and they have never had it. Has been a month since I have been there though.

pigeonmomParticipantHad delicious falafel at Dinos March ’08.

KeithMemberHave to tie in to another thread and relate a piece of advice I was given at my first Dead show: “Whatever you do, don’t eat the falafel.”

addParticipantLOL, CM – the first thing that went through my head when I saw the title of this thread was the “Basketball Jones” song!!

AnonymousInactiveA falafel truck in Georgetown was controversial (October 28, 2008 “The Stranger” article):

I vote for Smarty Pants… the best sandwiches and soups that I can buy.

FullTiltParticipantMy issue with smarty pants is that it is way over priced, for smug hipster waitstaff that would rather do shots with their friends then bring you your food. The falafel truck is not the only business the owner of Smarty Pants has tried to bully, and for that I will eat any where but there.

AnonymousInactiveFullTilt,
I have eaten at both your establishment and Smarty Pants. There is a major difference in offerings between your establishment and Smarty Pants.
Your establishment has hand-made ice cream and mexican ice treats, and apparently you have added a few beers to the menu lately.
Smarty Pants has sandwiches and other food items. Smarty Pants is also a full-fledged bar.
I don’t normally drink at bars. I have had a few drinks at Smarty Pants. I like Smarty Pants because it has the best sandwiches and soups that I know of, with the possible exception of Morgan Street Thriftway Split-Pea Soup.
Smarty Pants is popular for food with the almost-next-door bar Nine Lb. Hammer, which does not offer food.

Please provide some examples to back up your “issue.” Please in particular address the Smarty Pants Troublemaker sandwich and the Smarty Pants Split Pea soup. Please provide at least one example of each that is obtainable within a reasonable driving distance of your establishment in Whitecenter or Smarty Pants in Georgetown.
Your vanilla base ice cream is excellent, but I am not fond of anything else, including your pinball machines the last time I was there. Do you have Eight Ball Deluxe yet?
Disclaimer:
I am merely a customer of both establishments.

FullTiltParticipantScott what are you talking about? I never compared Full Tilt to Smarty Pants. What I was trying to say was that I am not paying 8.25 for a sub par sandwich. I understand paying that much at Salumi, and I would pay more than that at OK Corral. I have not had Smarty Pants split pea, which is a bit of a surprise because it is my favorite soup.
Smarty Pants is not really a restaurant. They are a bar that serves food. Which is fine. Lots of places do that, and serve good drinks, and decent food. I have not had good luck with the waitstaff there. Slow, rude service is mostly what I get. Georgetown Liquor company, I think has better sandwiches, a little pricey, but they also make you feel really welcome when you come in. Calamity Janes down the street has amazing food. Stella’s is one of my favs.
My other issue is over this Falafel truck. I think what Ptak did was uncalled for. I used to go to Smart Pants on a regular basis for brunch, but after the way he acted over the falafel truck, I will not go back.

CMPParticipantThere’s been talk about Hallava Falafel before here…now I may just have to give it a try for lunch next week after all of the good reviews. One of my friends had a hilarious story about Smarty Pants…he went there one summer day and had the worst service imaginable. He left a small tip (better than nothing which is what I would have done) and the waitress apparently came running out the door yelling at him about it. Crazy. I’ve had average service there, average food. Not a place I’d frequent much, especially after reading that Stranger article about the falafel truck.

RSMemberWait, Justin, Zaina’s is closed??? I was just there a few weeks ago! There’s also a hole in the wall kinda place on University Ave that has great falafel.
And I gotta agree about the vibe at Smarty Pants. Too many hungover hipsters all proud of themselves for drinking beer-mosas. ick.
January 20, 2009 at 6:39 pm #655520
JenVMemberI have to second the ups for Georgetown Liquor Company- that place rocks!
January 20, 2009 at 7:22 pm #655521
villagegreenMemberI work in Georgetown near the Corson Building and haven’t seen the Falafel truck in a while. Looks like it may have moved to Portland. Too bad as it was very good and cheap.
As for Smarty Pants, I go there about once or twice a month for lunch. Have no problem with the prices, but their food is somewhat inconsistent. Some days I swear they make the best sandwich in the city (Troublemaker and Gringa are my faves) and other days I wonder what has gone wrong. From what I’ve discerned the food seems to be much better when the owner, Tim, is around.
The Georgetown Liquor Company is my happy hour bar and I love it. However, I find their food to be a bit overpriced and the portions a tad small. Still, for a vegetarian restaurant it’s pretty damn good.
January 20, 2009 at 7:54 pm #655522
FullTiltParticipantThe Gringa is a great sammich. I just am not going to give them any money after what they did to the falafel guy. Even before then, I thought it was a bit much to pay to put up with surly staff.
Sorry, Zaina is not closed. I was reading the yelp page, and it listed the 3rd ave location. I am slightly stoopid.

JoBParticipantScottB…
try a walk on the wild side…
taste something besides vanilla:)
i was more than pleasantly surprised by the vegan (coconut milk base) flavor of the day last time i was there.
