I’m not sure of how many folks live in the Westwood area of WS, but there is one particular home almost caddy corner to Westwood Village (believe it’s corner of 29th and Barton) that has been an eyesore for the past 6 years. In recent months, it has the great addition of “Orwell was right” tag across the side of it along with lots of other graffiti. Does anyone know the story of this home or who the owners are? I find it hard to believe that someone actually still owns and pays property taxes on this home, which sits in a pretty good location (walking distance to park, shopping, library, etc), but looks like complete trash.

I thought that phrase “Orwell was right” was really clever.

But I agree the house is an eyesore, although I like it better then a house next to mine which is a lavender color…

I know the one – it looks like it might be abandoned. Orwell was right… clever indeed! :)

I opened this thread fully expecting a description of my house! Whew, wrong neighborhood! :-D I’ve wondered about that house for years. The grass gets cut there. ?

Yes, the grass does get cut, which adds to the mystery of what the story might be. A family which do not look like professional lawn maintainance folks, comes by throughout the growing season and cleans up the yard. Makes me think they are holding onto it for better sellling times.

I’ve wondered about that house too. Very strange.

I’ve also wondered about the house on the north side of the street going down to Lowman Beach on Lincoln Park Way. Halfway down the hill there is this half built house that has been there at least 15 years (maybe longer) and it just sits there…nothing. It’s right up from the apartments (condos?) just above Beach Drive.

Weirdly, Parcel Viewer says its ownership is unknown and there’s no record of its parcel number. Maybe their system is just undergoing midnight maintenance.

the GIS database is still hosed. It must have tipped over from all the vultures looking for foreclosures.

Note my own address will not pull up the property report so it is not just this house.

I just wanted to thank all of the responders here for referring to the structure in question for what it is: a house. I don’t know why but it has become such a pet peeve of mine to hear people use the word “home” when describing houses. HOME is such a loaded word, probably pushed by real estate agents to get people to buy houses.

if it’s the place I am thinking of, I think it has been abandoned/boarded up since I moved here in ’92…or at least it was in bad enough shape back then to look abandoned. You’d think someone would want to raze it and build…something. Anything. I am sure people squat there, it’s full of vermin, etc.

Bonnie, re: the house near Lowman…I remember seeing it on the market “as is” a couple years ago (after it had already been sitting there untouched for some time). I seem to recall there being notes about work not having been permitted/not being able to get it permitted, which would explain why construction stopped. I don’t know what the specifics were, but the hill behind it comes to mind and it also seems really close to the road – would be easy for a car to end up in the living room!

TR, Yeah, apparently the system was down at some point last night. I got the same message after clicking on several different properties, sometime after getting the info on Orwell House.

I went to school with the son who used to live there back in the early 80’s. Both he and his father still live in West Seattle. I understand they still own it and am surprised they haven’t done something with it. It is a nice location/corner lot.

there is a house on the street in back of me that has had several violations since it began and still isn’t finished. It hasn’t had any work done on it for a while. I wonder if they will ever be able to sell it. I sure wouldn’t want to buy it after it sitting there for a couple of years not occupied. Who knows what varmints have taken up residents.

The database is working fine now. Owners of that parcel apparently still live elsewhere in WS.

Isn’t there a law about cleaning up graffiti within a certain period of time, else face a fine?

I’m just amazed that the house on 29th is appraised at almost $300K. Anyone dumb enough to consider paying that much for a house shouldn’t be given a loan. Wow. And I realize that’s just the appraised value, but still shocking given its condition.

Its probably the land that makes it that much money. Being a corner lot and near a shopping area contributes to the cost.

Being across the street from a park makes any house more desirable too. Right now not many houses are selling regardless of the neighborhood.

The market value of the land is probably worth twice that to someone who could get the zoning changed to commercial. Or feels they can wait for that to happen.

That would be a fight waiting to happen. I for one don’t want commercial creep coming into my ‘hood.
