MulliganMemberDoes anyone have a local electrician you would highly recommend?

WSBKeymasterWe’d put in a good word for WSB sponsor Eagle Electric, which is based in West Seattle (see their ad on the sidebar). We also were pleased customers some time back (long before starting this business) as well. They also have been recommended on some earlier WSB threads, along with others – try putting
electrician recommendation
into the search box and those threads should come up. Good luck! – TR

I’ve used mark for years and have referred him to others as well and no one has had anything but rave reviews. Local guy, straight shooter, knows his craft, works with you. Perhaps the best sub on my list.

IrukandjiParticipantWe used Eagle Electric last week and were very pleased with their work and recommendations. Power went out in the garage, they fixed it for a reasonable fee. Made recommendations on increasing supply to garage for more home projects. We’d hire them again without hesitation.

kennemMemberHansen Electric – Dave Hansen – 909-8848, came highly recommended to us by someone with a construction background, and we can highly recommend him to others. He was great. A rare combination of someone who’s not only skilled but also great to work with, and fair on price.

aandersonParticipantI had a great experience with Eagle Electric/Mr Sparky. The owner, Dave, who lives in WS, was prompt, extremely helpful and very efficient. He explained everything he was doing, the pricing was very reasonable and overall I actually enjoyed the time he was at my house. He was kind, polite, and did a great job! He went the extra mile to not just do what I asked but to actually fix the problem. I recommended him to several neighbors on the spot! I would definitely use them again.

Arbor Heights GuyMemberWe recently had bids from all 4 of the contracters mentioned here for a kitchen remodel. Although we went with another contractor; the only one I would recommend here would be Eagle Electric. Since my 1913 kitchen had some non-standard construction and some knob & tube wiring issues, three of these contractors chose to either bid so high so as to be assured of not being selected or didnt even to get back to me, even to say they wernt interested, very rude I think. David with Eagle electric came back twice to revise the orginal bid. David goes out of his way to explain the project, very professional. We have had past work done by his father and Grandfather and would highly recommend them. We ended up choosing Scott from Max Electric for various reasons and we’re happy. If you’re project isn’t clean and pretty, or has “issues” some of these contractors just dont want to be bothered. Business must be pretty good, or at least good enough to not take on a project like mine.

hammerheadParticipantOk is it standard for a 59.99 charge to just to come look at the job? So if I get several companies to come out and bid on my house, it could cost me up to $180.00 just for bids? I own a house cleaning company and would never think to charge some one to come look their house. I understand there is a lot more involved but that seems a bit much especially in this economy.

ws4everMemberFor small jobs I would recommend someone other than Eagle Electric. The repairman gave me a spiel (complete with plasticized chart) about having to test the entire electrical system for $247, declining to solve the very simple/specific glitch that existed. Anyone else have this problem? I was floored.

jeremyMember+100 on Westside Electric. I’ve hired Bob to do work at my home in West Seattle & my business in Queen Anne. Terrific work, great attitude & very fair price.

Arbor Heights GuyMemberTo ws4ever; Yes,on Eagle Electric’s first visit, the 2 employees quoted from a form for different jobs w/ set prices. However, when the quote got back to David, he called with a revised quote and came out himself twice to talk over the job. Very sincere, capable and wants the work.

fetchwestMemberWe had a great experience with Eagle Electric. We had a small electrical problem with our home, they were prompt and actually charged us under what they quoted. Very professional.

lindwaMemberhammerhead & ws4ever:
I want to respond and tell you a little bit more about us. Yes, we charge a service travel fee of $59 but if we do work the day we are there then we waive that fee. We also do provide free estimates for larger non-service jobs. We specialize in service and repair, those day to day problems that arise that have to be addressed in order to keep your home in tip top shape. When my technicians are on site and are met with things that aren’t working sometimes it is necessary to evaluate the whole system, thus the $247 charge, you may think it is a specific glitch but with electrical things are often not as clear as presented. We are up front with all of our prices and never proceed with any work until you approve the pricing. We guarantee the price we quote to you and offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee. I don’t know any other companies making this bold of a promise.

ws4everMemberLinda, A person usually calls an electrician because something isn’t working. Answers and prices charged appeared arbitrary. $247 to detect a simple problem with a circuitbox (lettle thing not making full contact) does not warrant a full-house evaluation. A friend ended up doing this for free. I don’t want to be quoted a stock price when that level of service isn’t justified, even if it is a small job.

CreightonMemberBased on the blog comments I paid Mister Sparky/Eagle Electric to come out for a bid on my install of 5 small prewired under basic cabinet kitchen lights that I didn’t want to do myself. The total cost projected was $1000! No kidding. The tech agreed that was high and reworked the bid to $850. That’s a still a lot for installing a few simple lights. They got my “service travel fee” of $59, but I just can’t take them seriously with that high of a bid. Might be right for others, but not for me this time.

AlkiRagdollParticipantHere is a very strong recommendation for Mark Hesler at Mark Electric 206-409-7046. Today at 2pm I called in search of an electrician who could help me try to figure out why I am getting shocked at my office every time I touch the light switch (or when I touch the computer — it reboots). He stopped in my office on his way home and checked out all of the electrical and gave me suggestions on what might be happening. After an hour of suggestions he did not charge me.
I got his name off the blog, but tried others mentioned here, and the consistent response was that they might be able to fit me in next week one day. I will use Mark again for all of my major or minor electrical needs. THANK for suggesting him and a BIG THANKS to Mark.

B-squaredParticipantI reviewed the recommendations for an electrician last year and settled on Mark Kessler who lives nearby. he was great to work with and very reasonable. He reconfigured an existing circuit so to move some of it to a new circuit in the basement which ended up provideing additional lighting, outlets. was pleased with the work and would hire him again.

WSBKeymasterA reminder that while it’s OK to post as a representative of a business in a NEW request for recommendations (within reason – if you suddenly search out every thread that relates to your line of work and add replies to all of them, that is abuse, as is pulling up something that’s weeks, months, years old so you can add your plug) – you MUST disclose you are affiliated with that business. Thanks to those who just detected a violation of that rule here.

PDieterParticipantI’m glad to see a good guy like Mark picking up some business. He’s still on the top of my referral list of sub contractors.

KevinParticipantFolks need to be aware that there are a number of service companies such as electricians and plumbers who use a “flat rate” pricing model.
.
They lure you in by saying (advertising) that they will be “out today” or you don’t pay. This can sound very attractive when it is 2AM and your toilet is plugged up, or perhaps a circuit breaker keeps tripping in some part of the house.
.
While there is nothing illegal about this sort of sales tactic, the downside is that they will come out promptly as promised, and then quote you a set fee or “flat rate” to repair the issue so that you are “assured” that regardless of what they find – you will not pay any more than the already OVERPRICED quote.
.
The downside of this pricing model is that THEY already have a real good idea of what it will take to fix your plumbing or electrical issue and YOU have no clue. The ball is in their court.
.
The flat rate quoted will usually be high enough to cover the worst case scenario they normally would expect to encounter. Once in a while they may get stung, but over the long run they make out like bandits!
.
There are just too many stories about folks who are quoted hundreds of dollars more than the actual repair should have cost, simply in the name of “customer service” because they will be able to look at your problem the same day.
.
For a very objectively article written by a local Seattle plumbing company that was a Google search result of “flat rate plumbing” take a look at the following web page and see what you think:
.
http://www.seattleplumber.com/flatrate_article.html
.
Keep in mind that the same model holds true for other trades as well. The “flat rate” system is heavily weighted in favor of the service provider.
.
With plumbers and electricians normally charging anywhere from $75 – $150 per more per hour, a “flat rate” of $100 – $300 is could be quite fair for an urgent or emergency repair.
.
Any more than that, ESPECIALLY if you need services that are NOT needed today, then you are much wiser to consider using someone who will offer an estimate based on “TIME and MATERIALS” which is much fairer to all parties.
.
It’s your money – learn how to spend it wisely.
