rwParticipantWe are about to have our deck cleaned and stained. We’ve done this every 2-3 years, using a solid stain. Our product of choice for the past few iterations has been Cabot stain from True Value.
TV recently has been promoting an elastomeric deck coating named Duckback, which pitches its ability to last closer to 10 years.
I’m wondering what other peoples’ experience has been with Duckback and whether you would recommend it? The cost is about double the cost of Cabot’s solid stains … but the lifetime they promote would more than offset the cost difference.
Also, my wife learned that Consumer Reports recommends Behr’s solid color waterproofing wood stain as the best option both for longevity and cost.
Please share your thoughts, experiences, and recommendations. Thanks very much.

clark5080Participantgot to do the same thing all I have used is Penofin at the recommendation of Alki Lumber and McLendons. How are you cleaning yours. Will have to look into the two you have mentioned

rwParticipantClark,
We pressure wash and use a deck cleaner, but I don’t have a specific brand. The fellow who does our deck also sands as appropriate. He is more meticulous about prepping the deck before staining than I would have patience for. Our deck is large and I’m slow, so I gave up on doing it myself some years ago.

timeslidParticipantWe put on the Behr 15 year solid deck stain you mentioned a month ago after very thoroughly prepping the surfaces. It definitely needs two coats, but the result is an even well adhered finish. We used the Cabot stain you mentioned but it only lasted 3 years. I guess time will tell about the longevity.
