Preschool Teacher Job Description
Job Title: SSCC Co-op Preschool Teacher Responsible to: Preschool Board/Class
Job Summary:
Embraces and models NAEYC’s (National Association for the Education of Young Children) Standards for Teachers. Creates a respectful, reciprocal relationship with families. Provides a positive learning environment using developmentally appropriate practices that empower children to reach their full potential. Is knowledgeable about child development and regularly participates in continuing education. Communicates children’s progress and behavior to their parents. Supports and encourages parents in their role as assistant teachers within the classroom. Works in collaboration with a Parent Educator to give children and their families a preschool experience that promotes healthy development and learning.
Essential Duties: Responsible to Parents
*Teaching:
Creates and fosters a warm and supportive learning environment for children:
Is skilled and knowledgeable as a preschool teacher.
Activities and expectations are appropriate for this age/development level.
Experiences promote children’s development and learning.
Directs the flow of the daily classroom schedule.
Schedule is predictable, yet flexible, to meet children’s needs.
Supervises free choice play, group activities, and cleanup.
Interacts with children:
Greets children by name.
Connects with each child each day.
Engages children in the curriculum and with each other.
Directs the flow of children during transition times.
Creates and fosters a warm and supportive learning environment for parents:
Models factual commenting, redirecting and problem solving with children.
Directs parents in assistant teacher roles and offers suggestions.
Distributes curriculum in advance (at monthly parent meetings or email)
Plays active role in parent meetings.
*Communication:
Promotes, encourages, and models effective communication with children.
Promotes, encourages, and models effective communication with parents.
Projects enthusiasm for the program.
Is open and approachable for discussion of children with parents at a mutually agreed upon time.
Explains preschool teaching philosophy and procedures as needed.
Accepts and supports individual differences and values.
Is responsible and dependable (on time, ready, attends, follows through, etc.)
Keeps information about families confidential (except with Board & instructor).
*Facility Maintenance:
Maintains an orderly learning environment and facility.
Directs parents in facilities maintenance.
Directs parents in maintaining appropriate and safe use of classroom materials and equipment.
Requests repair and maintenance needs as soon as they are noticed.
Checks supplies often; coordinates supply purchases with responsible person(s).
Administrative Duties: Responsible to Board
*Communication:
Collaborates with Parent Instructor regarding parents and children.
Notifies Chair of absences and communicates substitute status.
*Curriculum:
Plans and implements a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate as defined by NAEYC standards including: art, blocks, manipulatives, sensory experiences, science, dramatic play, large and small muscle development, socialization skills, and music.
*Professional Development:
Participates in at least one continuing education workshop per year.
Sets goals and develops a plan for personal development.
Attends SSCC Teacher Meetings and In-Services.
New teachers attend SSCC 2 hour Parents As Teachers seminar and 2 hour Guidance And Discipline seminar.
Takes at least one Observation Day per school year to visit other preschools.
Implements new ideas in the classroom.
*Facility Maintenance:
Maintains an orderly learning environment.
Directs parents in maintaining appropriate and safe use of classroom materials and equipment.
Requests repair and maintenance needs as soon as they are noticed.
Checks supplies often and coordinates supply purchases with responsible person(s).
*Attendance:
Attends monthly Board Meetings, Parent Meetings and SSCC Teacher/Staff Meetings as specified in the Teacher’s Contract.
Arranges for teacher substitute for sick leave or professional development.
*Other:
Holds a current Red Cross certified First Aid/CPR card.
Has received safety training to include Child/Sexual Abuse Recognition and Reporting as well as the Handling of Blood-Borne Pathogens.
Has WA State Patrol Background Check
Adheres to contractual obligations.
