We’re fairly new to the neighborhood, and are looking for a good Bible-based Church to attend. Had been at NW Church in Federal Way, (a Four Square Church) however the drive is too much every week.
Prefer up-beat, inspiring atmosphere, no “Hell and Brimstone” pastors or groups. Open to other denominations, as long as it’s a Bible based Pastor/message.
Hopping to find a place somewhere from North Admiral down to the Junction including all areas east to west, but will go further for right fit… Thanks for any help, and God Bless! The Petersen’s (Susan)

Welcome to West Seattle! I apologize for J242 and JKB, I am sure they meant no harm with their snarkiness (at least that is what I choose to believe). I think you will find West Seattle a great neighborhood with a strong, caring and helpful community. Unfortunately, I don’t have a church recommendation for you but I do now there are several churches to choose from. Good luck and please don’t judge us based on the earlier responses to your request.

Recommendation requests are why the forum started seven years ago and they are not a place for criticisms of the request itself or the requester(s). We’re glad that even as the online world has evolved over those seven years, people still can and do come here to ask, and others are kind enough to reply. WSB is one of the few open-access alternatives to the increasingly walled, silo-ized local web.

etohick616Memberi personally dont go , however a good fried thinks her church is nice. i cant remember thename but its on california and hill. give it a go-its only one day if its icky and lots more ifyou like it. best of wishes on your search.

California/Hill would be Admiral Congregational Church.
I don’t know if the UCC churches (also including Fauntleroy and Alki) are considered “evangelical.”
One of the two churches that have been longtime WSB sponsors (advertisers), I believe, might fit that definition, All Souls, which meets at Madison MS on Sundays:

SueParticipantSusan, I can’t speak from personal experience since I’m a Unitarian Universalist, which is the polar opposite of evangelical <grin> but you could also check out Trinity West Seattle, which is the new name for the old Mars Hill church on 35th near Holden. http://www.trinityws.com As they are newly separated from Mars Hill when they disbanded, I don’t know what they’re up to these days.

(No worries about earlier posts – they were removed before I was able to check-back – didn’t see them.) However, I feel sad for anybody who feels they need to attack another person’s belief, or spiritually in such a random fashion. Those actions reveal a lot about their pain and need… Rolls off my back, as my validation comes from those who care about us, and of course from Above! Peace to all, Susan

I was going to suggest the Admiral Congregational Church; I don’t go to any church anymore, for “church”, but I recently met the new pastor and several congregates at their annual Christmas Caroling event; very nice & welcoming; I do attend several meetings per month at the Admiral church, so I know they are also very community oriented
~
and even though I don’t go to “church”, I am very involved in community, all over WS; fabulous neighborhood
~
if finding a church family is important to you and your family, there are a ton in WS; I would suggest trying several to see what fits for you; there’s a bunch just east of the junction; including Eastridge (next to Trader Joe’s) and WS Christian along “church row” 42st (I have many friends who love it there; and I’ve attended many functions there); http://www.westseattlechristian.com/

charlabobParticipantI second the recommendation for Trinity (formerly Mars Hill.) They’re new, starting over, and probably a good place to have whatever influence you want. New things are just generally more welcoming; less likely to say, “we’ve always done it this way,” when always is only 3 weeks.
BTW, this opinion is based on no knowledge of evangelical churches — just on my unparalleled ability to have random opinions.

4th of EightParticipantThe Shorewood one is a FourSquare(don’t know what that is, I’m Catholic!)but I’ve driven past it hundreds of times over the decades. It’s on 26th S.W., south of Roxbury I believe on S.W. 116th (?) on the N.E. corner of the intersection. Hey, no matter our denominations and beliefs.. as long as we are all good and benovelent and kind and extend charity! Good going!!

I’ve been part of this community (both the WSB and WS itself) a long time, but there’s nothing left but traffic reports if I can’t have a conversation.

Actually, I agreed with the position of the other deleted post as well. But I also agreed with its deletion, as it appeared to be deliberately insulting.

mark47nParticipantSo many churches but the only synagogue in the area is located in a church. As a Jew, I frequently marvel at the many flavors of Christianity. Generally speaking Judaism is of one flavor with differing levels of intensity. I admit that I’m simplifying a complex topic.

great observation mark47n; I was raised in the many flavors of Christianity (Baptist, then baptized/confirmation Episcopalian); studied & tried out nearly every religion/spiritual practice over my lifetime; member of Church of Religious Science for decades; stopped going about 10 yrs ago; now I describe myself as wannabe Jew; love the culture; I have attended Jewish service and potluck/shared meal at the Alki church; have also heard from Jewish friends that many come from other Seattle neighborhoods to go there; I also go to varied meetings there, very community oriented; funny though that I’ve never been to the Christian church there; we are definitely a predominately Christian oriented country/city, with what seems like infinite flavors/intensity/options; and WS has only one synagogue, in a church; wow!

WSBKeymasterThe Alki UCC/Kol HaNeshamah space-sharing is not so unusual. Physical space is costly and if it sits unused much of the time, it’s a waste of resources in many ways. But that’s not the reason I’m replying – West Seattle does have a second Jewish faith community; I’m not sure if they call themselves a synagogue, but we get notices from them for events around Jewish holidays, and currently a “Crash Course in Judaism” class. They don’t routinely announce their physical location but ask that people e-mail them. Anyway, it’s West Seattle Torah Learning Center, and there’s contact info on the Seattle Kollel website:

I believe they are Orthodox, while KHN describes itself as Progressive.
P.S. Including the sponsor I mentioned in an earlier post (All Souls), there are several Christian churches in this area which also space-share, meeting in schools and community centers rather than having their own building/campus.

DianeParticipantthanks Jan; so reading through that site, how is foursquare different from what Mars Hill was doing? or Jehovah’s Witnesses? few years ago, I had neighbors in my apt building who were deeply involved as leaders of each; one young couple at Mars Hill; another older woman as lifelong Jehovah’s Witness; all moved out > 2 yrs ago and lost touch, so can’t ask them

seaopgalParticipantDeleting posts with no explanation as to the reason is an act of psychic violence. And allowing another poster’s shaming response to the deleted posts to stand is incomprehensible, especially in that the shaming post calls out the names of those whose posts were deleted while IN NO WAY responding to the OP’s request for a recommendation.
