on boardParticipantAnyone know who actually sells blocks of ice still? Last year I went to Admiral Safeway and they looked at me like I was crazy.

schwaggyParticipant7-11

on boardParticipantWhich 7-11? The one on Admiral does not sell block ice. Thus, my resorting to posting to the neighborhood blog to ask if someone actually knows a specific location that sells block ice.
Thanks.

trickycooljParticipant7-11 35th & Avalon had it on the 4th of July. I remember debating whether or not I’d want a block since it might not melt as fast in the cooler but also took up more space.

JayDeeParticipantI think the 7/11 at Charlestown and California has some too. I remember seeing it and wondering if I should go that way rather than cubes…

sboneParticipantThriftway has block ice for sure.

on boardParticipantThanks for all the responses. As of tonight, here is what I have tried so far and been unsuccessful.
Junction Safeway
Junction QFC
Avalon 7-11
Charlestown 7-11
Admiral 7-11
Admiral Exxon
Admiral Metropolitan Market.
Only the Avalon 7-11 had one forlorn old block ice bag at the bottom of the bin covered in raspberry syrup. I just called Morgan Thriftway and they said they carry it, but are “out”.
Maybe this is more popular outside the city? On hot days, crushed ice doesn’t last very long in the coolers.

M LMemberIt’s easy to make your own block ice. Take an empty plastic jug, from say, cranberry juice or orange juice. Fill jug with water (not all the way to the top to allow for expansion), freeze. Better than block ice in that a) it doesn’t take up as much space in cooler b) you don’t get a cooler full of water after it melts c) it’s cheaper than buying ice d) you can drink the water as it melts for refreshing ice cold water. I always have a few of these on hand in my freezer….

JayDeeParticipantOr if your freezer is full of other frozen objects, then go to 7/11 and cross your fingers. Block ice is probably smarter, but it is rather inconvenient. I suspect it may be frozen harder too–so often cube ice seems to melt faster than my own ice cubes.

KJBParticipantSave empty 1/2 gallon milk cartons – fill with water and freeze = ice block.
