datamuseParticipantCheck it out: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/374509_retail12.html
It’s a fairly general discussion, but most of their examples are Junction-based.

DianeParticipantthanks for pointing out this article; I saw the title but hadn’t looked at it yet; sounded very general re entire city, may have missed it completely so really appreciate the mention and link
Funky Janes has been my favorite clothes shopping for years, and Angela is awesome

DianeParticipantbtw, when Conner Homes reps did a presentation at the Juno meeting a couple months back, and asked us what businesses/shops we would like, I told him that I loved Funky Janes and really hoped it would be included in new development; he said he had not talked to Angela yet but would be contacting her; was that all just hype? I hope for Angela and for her devoted shoppers that they will work out a good deal for her to continue on with providing us beautiful, affordable, recycled clothes

ZenguyParticipantAt least some of the developers understand that everyone does not want to live over a Baby Gap. Why on Earth would you put something like a big box store in a little area like West Seattle? I understand stores like Whole Foods because you typically do not drive as far for groceries as you would to go clothes shopping.
Hopefully developers can see from neighborhoods like Fremont that funky is the way to go and make your neighborhood a destination and not a strip mall.

marianneParticipantYes, I read that article with great interest and some sadness. I’ll admit that I get nostalgic for the Junction as it was when I was growing up here. There were independent record stores, deli’s, sporting goods and hardware stores, a butcher shop and fruit stand, variety stores like Kress and Wigwam. Also chain stores- Bartell’s, GO Guys, JC Penneys, Tradewell and Safeway. I must say that the “residential/retail mixed use” developments I’ve seen seem to me to be very strip mall-like.

ZenguyParticipantAh, Marianne…thanks for the walk down memory lane. I too remember the butcher shop on one side and the fish monger on the other with sawdust on the floor. There were tons of five and dime stores like Merediths, TurnAbout Records and Tapes where I would buy a forty-five on my way home from school and a Husky shake to top it all off, at least one of them are still here. There also used to be the Granada theater just south of the Alaska Junction. It was never open when I was young but we used to play around it and got to see the inside before they tore it down.
