beachdrivegirlParticipantI would love it if you could bring it! Thanks!!
November 10, 2008 at 11:06 pm #646802
ZenguyParticipantTotally agree with Kite Runner, it sucks you in right from the begining. I will come as well, I love reading but am slow at it and this might motivate me more.
I am reading Middlesex right now and it is nothing like I thought but excellent none the less.

beachdrivegirlParticipantZenguy sometimes those backs that are different than you expect are teh best ones you end up reading. :)

charlabobParticipantMonday the 17th at Tully’s works for me — so far. :-) Are we starting with lists of possible books? Ground rules? Whatever? I can’t wait!
November 11, 2008 at 4:02 pm #646805
JoBParticipantyou guys almost make me want to satay home:)
November 13, 2008 at 2:51 am #646806
LisaMParticipantI can try to dig up some lists from my last group.
Would be great if we can snag that big table at Tully’s…
Looking forward to meeting everyone on Mon!

addParticipantI’m going to try to make it too, if there’s room for one more – I’ve been reading a lot more lately and loving it. Zenguy – I loved Middlesex!!!
November 13, 2008 at 4:44 am #646808
beachdrivegirlParticipantOut of curiousity, what is middlesex???
November 13, 2008 at 4:56 am #646809
ZenguyParticipantOops, duplicate
November 13, 2008 at 4:56 am #646810
ZenguyParticipantBy Jeffrey Eugenides, it is the story of Calliope Stephanides and three generations of her family coming from Greece to post deprssion Detriot. To understand why Calliope is not like other little girls she has to uncover a dirty family secret. It was a Oprah book club choice. I am three quarters done and it is pretty intersting and well written.

beachdrivegirlParticipantI think I am going to have to check it out!
November 13, 2008 at 5:24 am #646812
ErikParticipantZenguy – Earlier today I was searching through some of the books in my house for a business resource book and ran across one of my late wife’s books by Jeffrey Eugenides ‘The Virgin Suicides’. I’d tell you what it’s about but I’m probably a slower reader than you….when I read, it’s every word and the words between the words, and usually more than one book at a time. It can take me months to read a book. I’d probably be the one member of the book club that never got the damn book done in time.
November 13, 2008 at 6:15 am #646813
ZenguyParticipantThanks for trying to make me feel good Erik, you and I read the same way, I have three books I am currently reading in various states…focus, focus, focus.

andreaParticipantI have boot camp on Monday’s until 7pm, but I will try to make it to the meet up but it may be too late…this is the Tully’s on Alki right? I will do my best…I love getting new book ideas and sharing them with people.
I really liked Middlesex as well Zenguy…it is not what you think it us going to be…I really appreciated the history lesson too on Greek, Turkish, and European life in the early 1900’s. I had no idea! I just finished the Pillars of the Earth (another Oprah book club selsction), and it is a fantastic book. An amazing history as well as life lesson. My new absolute favorite however is anything by Ivan Doig. He is just such a gifted writer. Whistling Season is a great read if anyone is looking for a good book.
November 18, 2008 at 4:05 am #646815
ZenguyParticipantDid I piece the bits of the meet up together incorrectly? I was a little lonely at the Alki Tully’s at 7:00 tonight, fortunately I brought my book with me.
Next Monday possibly?
November 18, 2008 at 3:28 pm #646816
addParticipantI would definitely commit to coming next Monday, Zenguy. I was planning to go last night, but forgot that I had a parent-teacher conference scheduled for the same time.
November 18, 2008 at 4:01 pm #646817
JoBParticipantlooks like i may get to go to the first meeting after all:)
November 18, 2008 at 5:00 pm #646818
ZenguyParticipantOk, to make sure there is no mistakes on my part Monday the 24th at 7:00 at The Tully’s on Alki…right? They close at 8:00 so we should come with some ideas for books to choose.
November 18, 2008 at 5:51 pm #646819
addParticipantZenguy, thanks. Should we start a new thread so the info is easy to find? Is there a better place to meet that doesn’t close so early?
November 18, 2008 at 6:07 pm #646820
ZenguyParticipantThat might be a good idea. We could try Barnes and Noble at Westwood they are open much later and have a coffee shop too or we could do Cafe Ladro (at Morgan), they are open until ten.
November 18, 2008 at 9:34 pm #646821
addParticipantZenguy, I sent you a PM.
November 19, 2008 at 10:27 pm #646822
AnnieParticipantOoops! I thought it was tonight and just signed on to see where and when it was. I do think that we’d need somewhere open longer than an hour. Was a book chosen or was that supposed to be the agenda? Sorry to be dense, but I’ve been out of town and out of touch.
November 19, 2008 at 11:23 pm #646823
ZenguyParticipantNo, we were going to choose a book at the first meeting. Add and I were thinking of Barnes and Noble since it is open til ten and we could just buy them when we decide if we wanted (plus I have a B&N gift card). I will start a new thread to make sure everyone knows. :)
