JunkYardNeighborMemberNeed advice on this situation:
In Fall/Winter when the foliage reduces we were introduced to a neighborhood junkyard that has 5 junk cars in the yard (all partially seen from various parts of our home) in addition to various car parts, bicycles, weeds and misc junk. The garage/shed (which may house even more junk) has a dilapidated roof with its trim falling apart/off.
Step 1: I tried to reach that neighbor with no success – nobody home for the most part. I didn’t really want to go there at night when I see the light on (and potentially get shot or something).
Step 2: I opened a case with the DPD. As spring kicked in, most of the junk got masked by foilage and DPD administratively closed the case saying it wasn’t a big deal without ever stepping foot on that property itself.
I am pretty convinced a house nearby for sale has been on the market for months (in this overheated market) because they have a clearer view of that junkyard.
My options:
– Escalate up the chain in the DPD.
– Spend a load of cash installing evergreen trees that block the view (out of sight/out of mind).
– Rationalize “it’s a free country” and not invite friends over in fall/winter.
What [else] would you do?
I hate being such a snitch about this but I’m sure WSB members will have useful ideas that won’t get me into trouble. Or maybe that homeowner is a WSB reader and takes note and cleans up (pretty please!)

Green GuyParticipantWhere is this house located? I offer free metal removal and buy junk vehicles on occasion. I could drop a few flyers off letting them know about my service. GreenGuysSeattle@gmail.com

melissaParticipantJYN, are you on 98th, by any chance? We live near a neighbor who sounds suspiciously like yours. We would be happy to chime in if we knew who to contact.

HunterGParticipantJunkyard,
I suggest looking up the laws in regards to your situation. It may take some serious reading, but, it could work in your favor if the junk cars and miscellaneous debris could pose a potential health hazard….it attracts rats, etc.
If they may be breaking any laws, a kind anonymous note in the mailbox just may get some wheels rolling. Literally, if they have wheels that is.
Good luck.

anonymeParticipantIf this is the house at the corner of 98th, it’s been a problem for years. At present, there are two vehicles on the street that have not moved for TWO YEARS. SPD no longer responds to abandoned vehicle complaints. I’ve submitted two in the last six months (it seemed reasonable given that the vehicles had not moved in more than a year) but the vehicles were not even tagged, much less removed.
From what I understand, the owner/tenant has had huge fines in the past for code violations, was forced to clean up and even spent some time in jail. He also uses the empty house adjacent to his for more junk storage.
Nothing will happen unless those of us in the vicinity rattle some cages. The complaints must come from more than one person. First, report the vehicles every 72 hours and keep doing so. I know it’s tiresome, but the City needs to know you/we won’t give up. Second, file a complaint for code violations. Do this for the other address as well; it will become obvious that the empty house is being used as a second dump site. I’m not sure if the house can be declared a nuisance property (there’s no apparent evidence of drugs) but that’s another angle to look into. Maybe it could just be condemned as uninhabitable…

JunkYardNeighborMemberThis is not the 98th street address which sounds like an even bigger mess. I don’t want to really post hints about the address on the forum (following WSB’s rules). I’ll follow up on a few suggestions posted here. Thanks.

KevinParticipantKeep after the city! I have had similar issues in Arbor Heights (illegal backyard mechanic), and they WILL come out!

JoBParticipantYou never know what will happen.
after 3 years living next to what everyone assumed was an abandoned house..
i offered a few man hours to help beat the vegetation back and level the soil a bit in the front yard.
since then the owner not only has continued the work and cleared the blackberry patch..
he bought me chocolates to say thanks
sometimes the mess in our neighbor’s yards is as overwhelming to them as it is to us.
“What can i do to help?” can be a very powerful question.
