KenParticipantEvery couple of years, after a general election, the district leadership is dissolved and new leaders are elected. Between presidential elections the leadership is usually re-elected as long as things are still on pretty much an even keel.
After a presidential election is usually when change happens. The 34th district re org happens Wednesday January 14th at the Hall at Fauntleroy. Even if you can’t vote you should come watch the fireworks.
The leaders and representatives chosen at the district level are how the local party is changed from the bottom up if it is going to. Those elected by the PCO’s can push the majority opinion up through the district, county and state Democratic party.
This is why PCO’s as well as you their constituents, need to pay attention to the candidates for local party offices and let your PCO know if you have an opinion or feel strongly about one candidate or another.
Most of us probably only know them as names and resumes but they all live here in the district (West Seattle, Vashon, White Center and parts of Burien) so there might be some WSB readers who know them and feel like posting a comment supporting them.
The 34th district newsletter has a list with a short CV or comment by each candidate in the January newsletter: (PDF format)
http://www.34dems.org/Docs2009/Newsletter-January-2009.pdf
There seems to be a few more who did not get into the newsletter and I will list the ones I am aware of and hope they can get their message out to all PCO’s to consider.
Lisa Plymate For King County Committeewoman, 34th LD
Kim Becklund – 1st Vice Chair
PCO’s should have there email request for support in their inboxes. Anyone who wants it forwarded to them should drop me an email request.
Now is a good time to join the 34th district Democrats and a new online application makes it easier to do so.
http://www.34dems.org/members-join.htm
The candidates endorsed by the outgoing chair are listed in Ivans final ” Chair Report”
http://www.34dems.org/news_chair.htm
Members can vote for the Secretary and treasurer spots but the rest can only be voted on by elected PCO’s
I am not sure why but the newsletter seems to say that those elected as write in PCO in August cannot vote in this re-org.
Questions? Comments?

charlabobParticipantSo if we want to have some influence on who wins the upper-level posts (which some of us do), we should lobby our local PCO?
January 12, 2009 at 6:57 am #654654
KenParticipantYes :)
And of course if your precinct does not have a PCO, it should be an incentive to you to become one :)
Politics is 20% passion and 80% showing up.

addParticipantHI Ken- I joined the 34th DD a few months ago but haven’t received any info at all. I sent a check, but haven’t followed up to see if it was cashed. Unless you know off hand, I’ll check the website to see who I should talk to.

KenParticipantAdd: email Jackie. She keeps track of memberships and sends the newsletter. This is always a busy time for her. You should be getting the newsletter if it was processed correctly. Member names are also printed in the margins of the newsletter. Wait I have one…
You are listed as a “friend” rather than down on the members page with us cheapskates.
Call
935-9683
or email jdupras@quidnunc.net
http://www.34dems.org/org_e-board.htm#dupras
And ask if your on the newsletter mailing list. You can come to the meeting and vote for Secretary and treasurer. Jackie always needs volunteers to help send out the newsletter as well and since I never show up, I am hoping some other dedicated democrats can take up my slack.
Also note, Dues start over on January 1st each year so we have to pays again for the next year.
We spent everything we took in except January’s rent on the hall and the cost of mailing the newsletter but it got us the desired results. :)
Mostly. Next time we take the 8th district!

JoBParticipantKen…
you are going to nudge me into paying attention and i am not going to like you for it:)

jwdMemberAdd: I am the Newsletter Editor, but I no longer keep the member list. We have gone to a new system for keeping track of memberships, one which allows us to receive membership dues by credit card. This system is a great improvement, but nothing like my beloved old Excel list, so I turned the job over to someone else who is more computer savvy than I am. I think you just got lost in the transition, and no, you don’t need to pay dues again. We carry over members who pay in November. Please e-mail me your address and I’ll make sure that you receive the newsletter.
Ken: Here’s a quick explanation of what happened with the PCO write-ins: the State Party requires that each candidate receive at least 10% of the highest vote-getting Democrat in that precinct in order to be a PCO. None of the write-ins met that threshold, and some of them didn’t even know that they had been elected. A few weren’t even Democrats. Those who are genuinely interested in the job can be appointed at the next meeting, but not until after the election of officers takes place. They will not have a vote in the reorganization.
As to the listing of candidates in the newsletter, they are the candidates that had come forward at the time the newsletter went to the printer, Thursday night, January 1. There’s at least one more candidate besides Kim Becklund and Lisa Plymate: Mitch Feller, is running for Second Vice Chair, and there are probably even more out there.
Normally our reorganization, or election of officers, is pretty boring because almost every candidate is unopposed. But not this year! There are at least two candidates for almost every position. This promises to be one rip-roaring meeting! Hope to see you all there.

JoBParticipantYou have me hooked enough to try to attend tomorrow..
it sounds as though this is a situation where every vote really does count…

KenParticipantHey Jackie:
Who is actually doing the membership stuff? I was going to use the on-line site but it appears to have been designed by a Microsoft usability lab employee.
:)
I cannot re-up since I have a family/household membership which takes two separate transactions and the site says the name must match the name on the Credit card. I will just use cash and fill out the form.
Maybe next time.
Also: I think I read somewhere that nominations can also be made from the floor…
I think I will bring some plastic sheeting for the front row like at a Gallagher concert.

jwdMemberHi Ken, Jeff Upthegrove is the new Membership Chair and Stuart Yarfitz is the lead on the new data management system. They both know that there’s a problem with household memberships and they are working on it.
You read it in the newsletter: nominations, as always, may be made from the floor. I’m too old to know anything about a Gallagher concert, but bring that plastic sheeting.
