“PS…I’m a 55 yr old man and fireworks have been going off as far back as I can remember, do I like them, no, do they keep me awake at night, yes sometimes but they’ll probably keep going off until the day I leave this earth”

Seems like a very defeated attitude. Why? I don’t understand that. Public nuisances that a lot of people vocally dislike and want to end can be stopped. If 1 house on a block throws loud ragers every night, the police can step in with fines to address the problem. The same can be done with fireworks.

“so I can either ignore them or let my inner sole dwell on them and turn into a grumpy old man, what do you think?”

There’s a third option, work to get real enforcement of the issue. Set off mortar shells? That’s $5K for each round.

Taking a no-holds-barred approach for just one year would drive so much news everyone would know about it and maybe, just maybe, they’d drive or catch a bus south for the the 1-3 miles to WC/Burien to set them off instead. You know, where it’s actually legal? Here in my neighborhood during New Year’s the idiots across the street were setting off larger rockets (not penny-bottle rockets but not mortars) AT cars. SPD didn’t do anything about it even though I said I had video of them doing it repeatedly. That’s offensive. It shouldn’t take a serious accident before this changes but it’s only a matter of time before one of these tools sets a forest fire, or causes a car accident, or physically injures someone. Why is that an acceptable risk?

“My worry is that once an income tax is started it will go up, up, up, and municipalities and state agencies will still charge or pass new taxes further burdening everyone.”

This is exactly why we will never improve our tax system. Even when voters have a chance to move toward a fairer, more progressive tax system the defeatist attitude prevails. Just a couple of years ago there was an initiative that would have levied a small income tax on the most wealthy corporations and individuals in the state (I don’t remember the initiative number, you could look it up). It would have been enough to completely cover the costs of a state sponsored healthcare program and only affect a tiny portion of the populace. And it was something we all got to vote on, not something cooked up by legislators. Result? Not passed. Because “once they start an income tax…”

So, always a good topic for complaining, but no stomach, even among voters much less legislators, to do even the slightest thing to alter one of the most unfair and regressive tax systems among the 50 states.

Hey, susieq…those are called “building bricks” to help your search, and unfortunately are fairly hard to find unless you’re buying a LOT. I would suggest checking with Second Use or other architecture recycling places. Funny how brick has fallen so out of fashion. Concrete block is much more readily available, but has it’s obvious limitations. Cheaper, though, and can be stained for aesthetics. Good luck.

TSurly. Thank’s for knowing and following the law. Wouldn’t have to rant if everyone else did the same. Actually, I’m a boater and I, and many of my boater friends have had close calls with SUP’s and kayaks who did NOT have the right of way but felt they didn’t have to change course to avoid a close encounter(no, I’ve never hit one). One of my friends did challenge a SUP rider on Lake Union who said the place that rented him the board said “don’t worry-the other boater’s will get out of your way”. A friend of mine work’s for Kenmore Air. They get SEVERAL call’s every summer from irate paddlers demanding to know why the floatplanes taking off and landing on Lake Union don’t stay out of THEIR way.

There is no such thing as an ‘undergrown’ laurel! As a former landscape professional, I would recommend removal. Even with constant maintenance (shearing at least twice a year) the hedge will continue to get bigger and uglier each year. The interior of the hedge will not grow foliage, so the more you cut it back, the worse it looks. It is now listed as an invasive species.

As there is no way to harm this monster, go the cheapest route you can. Anyone with a ladder, a hedge trimmer, and an eye for a straight line can do it. Don’t waste your money.

TSurly, I appreciate your answer. My worry is that once an income tax is started it will go up, up, up, and municipalities and state agencies will still charge or pass new taxes further burdening everyone. With the political makeup of Olympia I sincerely doubt there will ever be a state income tax option. Democrats control the house and senate by the slimmest of margins and Inslee can’t do anything although I bet he wishes he could.

We all know we have to pay taxes. It is our duty as citizens.
Personally I want to throw out the federal tax system and simplify it. Exemptions are great for many people but many people do not take full advantage of it. I don’t see a change in the federal tax policy other than going up and down and special interests trying to get even more exemptions. Locally the current crop of City Council members are too tax happy.

On the 50 bus heading home to Admiral from Alaska Junction when driver slammed on the brakes, me, sitting in back of the bus with 4 year olds went flying. Not one person on the bus helped me up. Grandma with 2 now crying twins. To add insult to injury, a young man with ? Younger brother (like 12) looked up from his cell phone and then back down, resting his foot on my hand ! I had to pick up his darn foot and move it !

“TSurly, please enlighten me on why the state needs an income tax which is not an option for the state and municipalities.”

States without income taxes rely more heavily on sales, excise and property taxes, which fall disproportionately on moderate and low income families. Basing budgets on the backs of families who lack a stable financial footing is unsustainable in the long run, and it runs the risk of dampening consumer spending that fuels so much of our nation’s economy.

“Or do you subscribe to the Kshama Sawant view and just would never be a friend of a Republican? (Her words, not mine).”

No, my core group of oldest friends (guys I grew up with in a very conservation area of VA) are Republicans. We have heated debates, but in the end there is resolution, mainly on the fact that we agree as to how much of a disaster Trump is. The exception is one guy is this group, who I would describe as the poster child of Trump’s base. An uneducated (failed out of college), misogynistic (Jordan Peterson cultist who loves to refer to women by all kinds of nasty names), racist (openly refers to all people of color by the N word), who blames his lack of success on “Obama Policies”, minorities, and women.

I grew up in a place where fireworks were rare and were a treat when they happened. I remember the anticipation before a fireworks show where we were eagerly awaiting dark skies and the adults were carefully inspecting the ignition area and making sure everything was safe. I remember the shows were special and we reacted to the colors with oohs and ahhs.

I never imagined what happens here in Seattle these days, which has gotten absurdly out-of-hand. The rolling thunder of explosions yesterday started early and lasted very late into the night, making bedtime for my child impossible and we’re paying the price for it today. Our dog spent the night in the bathroom scared out of his mind. The heart shaking booms are ridiculous. The amount of explosions is crazy. I miss just having a good time and not spending the night worried about our dog and our sleep and our neighborhood safety.

All of you who talk about “it’s just for one night”, “it’s your responsibility to take care of your dog”, etc are so inconsiderate. Many, many, many people are asking for you to listen to your neighbors and take your absurdly rude behavior elsewhere. I want to be able to celebrate this holiday, and the New Year, and every Seahawks game without this unreasonable infringement on my right to live my life peacefully in this neighborhood. Please, just listen to your neighbors imploring for your attention and respect, we will return it in kind.

I loved fireworks when I was a kid, but I hate the 4th now. I can deal with one evening of loud noise, even though it makes me sad for all the freaked-out animals, vets and babies, and for the sheer selfishness of the people who don’t care at all about them. But last night I was still hearing them at 4 am, and I know I’ll be hearing them all weekend too. And anyone who complains is called an unpatriotic whiner just for not wanting to hear constant explosions for days, and told that it’s their responsibility to drug their animals, hose down their houses, leave the area….what, for a week? Just so a bunch of overgrown man-boys can blow stuff up.

I am seeing that many of you also have tax and city fatigue. I am guessing that if there are some decent voting choices, there could be some changes.

TSurly, please enlighten me on why the state needs an income tax which is not an option for the state and municipalities. Or do you subscribe to the Kshama Sawant view and just would never be a friend of a Republican? (Her words, not mine). The state has a tax surplus at the moment.

And I recently heard the City of Seattle retirement funds/investment portfolios are considered among the worst managed across the country. This city can’t seem manage how they spend and invest money. I am not saying a fiscally responsible person has to be a Republican because most in this area seem to be progressives. But I am saying the current crop of politicians and many from the past have failed us. They are also failing the local government employees current, past and future.

Listen, some private sector/charitable entities ideas actually work and help people. Did you know that the United Way of King County when spending a dollar, 94 cents goes to programs and people and only 6 cents goes to administrative fees?

There is a middle ground even government can reach with the right people in place. I also believe if we can work on some of the local issues without the inflammatory rhetoric, we can get somewhere.

I am hating this. I really feel such a hatred of anyone who does this. The explosions continue, and we are all worn out and on-edge. I cannot figure out how in the world we’ve come to this…where these assholes continue on through the night, as if it’s their right, and there is nothing stopping them. Hatred is filling my soul.

I agree with you. I’m very close (about 3 of the long city blocks) to the city limits line where they are legal to set off, during certain hours on July 4th, but they go on before and beyond that, and I know what I’m hearing is much closer.

I don’t suffer from any PTSD like many of our Veterans do, but am annoyed and at time startled by the sound, but what really affects me is the smoke. I have COPD, asthma, and congestive heart failure which all affect my breathing, and I’m really feeling it tonight. Granted, I probably left the windows open too long, but even long after closing them am feeling great discomfort in my breathing.

But, the “patriots” (hold on a sec, they need to grab another beer) don’t give a crap. I’m supposed to do something like get the hell outta town, even though I don’t have a car, (but that doesn’t matter) to get to some breathable air. (Please note that nobody has ever told me that, but I figure it must be their answer considering what they tell dog owners to do). I’m tired as hell right now, and about 1 1/2 hours past my normal bedtime, but not sure I could get to sleep. I suppose, though, I should give it a try, after putting earplugs in, and eye drops since my eyes are now burning.

Yes, I said it… Idiots. Why do so many of our fellow citizens feel the need to harass their fellow citizens (many who are vets, many with pets, many with children) who cannot sleep or potentially end up going into a panic because of your fun at making thing go boom? Are you nothing more than selfish teenagers? How is that fair to service members, families with pets or families with kids? It’s just all about you isn’t it? Shame on you a$$#0les.

Shame on the lot of you. If you want to set off fireworks, drive just a few minutes south out of city limits where it’s actually, you know, LEGAL to do so. The lot of you should be hosed down with high PSI water cannons the moment you try to light one of your little fireworks.

The city already spends millions on a massive, spectacular fireworks event that you could never even remotely compare to so get over yourselves, respect your f’ing neighbors and knock it the f off!

Time to get SPD to earn thier operating budget in just a couple of nights. Go out and ticket these idiots setting of fireworks in city limits and fill up their coffers. I would hazard a bet that they could make their annual operating budget in just two nights (the 4th and new year’s eve) if they just did their jobs and ticketed these jerks!!!
