JTB: While my ordeal with the City confirmed things I had learned from other people in small businesses, I have always been of the mindset that government should be “of”, “by”, and “for” the people–not the other way around. I have also always believed that “People” in the context of our state and federal constitutions are defined by the bill of rights as individuals and not a communistic collective. Perhaps my viewpoint goes against the grain of certain Seattle bureaucrats?

“In truth, progressive believe the alternative guiding principle is that of shared responsibility” Shared responsibility sounds great in theory, but it has not proven to be a sustainably productive way to run a society because it goes against human nature. People will always want to slough off responsibility to someone else if they can. Incentivized personal responsibility is far more sustainable through individual reward.

One of a billion examples: For decades, both Russia and China had shared responsibility in food production. “The people” collectively owned the land and resources, yet few were willing to work hard enough and creatively enough to produce what they needed to survive. Privately owned farms in the US (with one-tenth the labor per acre and a fraction of the land) produced enough surplus to feed not only our society, but every communist society on earth. The communists got smart and started giving personal responsibility and productivity rewards to individual farmers–and food production “magically” soared.

“We do not have healthy competition for labor…” — I totally agree with this. It is a conundrum. Do we accept the status quo of increased domination of mega corporations in Seattle or do we deregulate so that a free market can do the work of driving up wages through demand? I prefer the latter because it has automatic adjustments for inflation and causes employers to value individual employees more–and treat them nicer. I am so tired of hearing from Amazonians that hate their jobs, but see no other choices for employment.

“Wealth” is a perception of value. When people are given wealth that was earned by others, then it is not valued as earned wealth. You actually destroy the very essence of wealth when you forcibly try to redistribute it. Seattle invests more in the so-called “war on poverty” than ever and it has only resulted in increased poverty. On the other hand, our politicians (both right and left) have allowed vast wealth to be transferred upward to a handful of banksters and monopolistic corporations.

“Trickle down” only works if there is a system for it to trickle down through. Government imposed barriers against small business works like impermeable clay to hold wealth at the top. The robust hammers used to curb abuses of big corporations inadvertently burden small businesses to a point where they are legislated out of existence.

Seattle politicians have a one-size-fits-all attitude about business. Permits, fees, licenses, and penalties (which have increased exponentially) are largely the same whether you are a sidewalk vendor or Boeing. What is so progressive about that? It is actually extremely regressive as it widens the gap between those who can and those who can’t afford to go into business and compete for employees. So far, it doesn’t look like any of the morons running for City Council want to address the government barriers that cause inequity.

I will change my NOTA vote to the first person who advocates a reduction in permits, fees, licenses and penalties for start-up businesses. We urgently need to get more active “capitalists” in Seattle so that we have a healthy diversified economy.

au, if in fact Roundup is hand painted on individual plants, that’s both troubling and reassuring. It’s troubling for the obvious efficiency and productivity issues but reassuring in that it limits the likelihood of inducing glyphosate resistance in near-by weeds that are exposed to sub-toxic levels of the herbicide. That resistance can be passed on with increasing effect on subsequent generations of weeds.

As a curious side note, there are some studies demonstrating that glyphosate can have a hormetic effect on some plants. Hormesis defines a biphasic dose-response effect in which low levels of a chemical or agent can stimulate a beneficial effect on exposed organism while higher level are toxic. In other words, a little dab will do ya while a glob will kill ya.

I actually painted Roundup on some weeds in my lawn this summer, but the invasion was too advanced to knock it out. A hand-held squirt bottle should be sufficient for the Parks maintenance folks to knock out weeds efficiently without affecting nearby plants.

captainDave, It’s helpful to know about your terrible episode with the City bureaucrats. I appreciate how that would create the broadly negative view you have of Seattle city government.

However, it’s not clear to me how much of your general political perspective has been shaped by that experience and how much was set before then.

    For example:

“Conservatives, by and large want to empower individuals to prosper by their own efforts instead of having to rely on a bloated and failing government that can’t afford to keep it’s promises.” That’s doubling down on a conservative them which assumes the only alternative or opposing view is that of somehow relying on a failed government. In truth, progressive believe the alternative guiding principle is that of shared responsibility.

    then

“Healthy competition for labor is what lifts all boats on a rising tide.” We do not have healthy competition for labor so wages have stagnated while new wealth has flowed to the small number of boats riding on the rising tide of increased productivity.

I believe it would be more accurate to say that a healthy distribution of new wealth lifts all boats on a rising tide. That’s what history seems to indicate.

To ease your fears a bit…While I agree Monsanto isn’t the most scrupulous corporation the parks dept uses round up for invasive species removal and it isn’t applied on the grass. Its usually hand painted on each individual plant. It doesn’t break down into more dangerous chemicals and has a half life of (I can’t remember off the top of my head) but its well less than a year. Also, herbicide application stops after Oct for the rainy season and its not applied when its raining. Also glyphosate binds to the soil so it will only get to the waterway through erosion. The horrible (true)things you read about Round Up are from indiscriminate and large volume usage.Goats would be great except they aren’t discriminate about what they eat and will eat all the native plants as well as the invasive ones.

Roundup is indeed horrible. Maybe the mayor should worry less about bicycles and rainbow crosswalks. In fact, I am going to email the mayor and the parks dept in a moment. Feel free to join me. I’m glad you brought this up, but posting on the blog is just one step.

I don’t have the Parks Superintendent Jesús Aguirre’s email address, but we can email rachel.acosta@seattle.gov. And, as noted previously, the Deputy Superintendent is the genius Christopher Williams, who tried to push through the GoApe Ziplne in Lincoln Park a few years ago.

The government forbids companies to discriminate on the basis of race, veteran status, disability, and a variety of other criteria. HR departments often instruct employees doing interviews to strictly avoid those topics – it’s harder to be sued if you didn’t know.

Also, a job application commonly includes a government (the same one as above) form asking for disclosure of race, veterans status, and disability. Huh.

Then I got to reading the fine print. ‘White’ is defined as ‘descended from indigenous peoples of Europe or the Middle East’. So apparently I just self-identified as a Neanderthal.

They’re using Round-Up where children play? I’m horrified! In spite of Monsanto’s years long insistence that it’s safe, (remember tobacco companies?) more and more evidence is coming to light about how safe it’s not. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/04/25/roundup-health-study-idUSL2N0DC22F20130425

I don’t have the referral handy, but I’ve read that the chemicals Round-Up breaks down into are even more dangerous than the original. And then they wash into the river and Sound.

Gorgeous! Try Amazon’s new service, Handmade at Amazon. I think it’s easy to become a seller there, I believe they take $1 per sale or something like that.

Also, look into the Bellevue Arts Museum’s artfair in July. It’s juried, so you have to apply and be accepted to sell there, but I understand it’s a very good place to sell and they LOVE this quality of work.

A few years ago I bought a nice looking desk with a drawer at Village Woodworks for $500. It was manufactured in California, not hand-crafted as yours is, so you could charge a lot more. Maybe Twilight Gallery in the Junction would be interested in selling some of your pieces? Some of your items really do look like works of art.

I believe you’re underselling yourself saying you are “fairly good” – if they function as good as they look, you are an accomplished wood artisan.

    .

If I had a space for them, I would pay $800 for the patio table made from scraps and $200-$300 for the bench.

    .

The night light boxes could easily sell for $15, $25 if you could water proof them for outdoor use. While you could get $35-$50 for the light house.

    .

A custom crooked door that beautiful would cost $900-1,500 and the desk set might go for as much as $1,500; $1,250 for the desk & $250 for the cabinet

    .

That mirror is easily a $2,000 piece.

As far as what to charge; can’t help there. I have absolutely no concept of what stuff is worth. I have no idea, with many types of items, whether something is worth $5.00 or $500.00.
