The intro to the bill actually gives a pretty good statement of their rationale for wanting to have a separate statute regarding legislative branch records, just as the judicial branch does. Protecting the privacy of constituents’ emails and other communications is the reason I’ve seen given most often. The biggest concern I see is the section that prohibits judicial review of denied requests.

Sen. Sharon Nelson also voted for the bill, Senate Bill 6617, which would exempt state lawmakers from Washington’s Public Records Act.

The hurried bill followed a lawsuit brought by many Washington media organizations last year, including The Seattle Times and The Associated Press, in which a Thurston County judge ruled last month that the legislature IS subject to the Public Records Act. The ruling is being appealed, but in breakneck speed, state legislators pushed through the bill (in 48 hours and without a public hearing or floor debate) to exempt themselves from the state law that the judge said they were obligated to follow. According to The Seattle Times this morning, Inslee’s office has been flooded with emails in recent days urging him to veto the bill. He has until the end of Thursday to allow it to become law or veto all or part of it.

Below is a link to The Times’ Page One editorial today, the first time the newspaper has published an editorial on its front page in 110 years. The link also includes contact information for Inslee and legislators (including Fitzgibbon, Cody and Nelson).

I am very surprised at this turn of events in Olympia and more surprised that some of our local West Seattle representatives were involved in voting for this rushed through bill. See this morning’s Seattle Times if you aren’t aware of what’s going on.

Can anyone out there enlighten me on why those local reps voted to exempt themselves from the Public Records Act? I cannot find an explanation from any our of representatives for their approval vote and I’m trying to be a reasonable person here. I would like to hear an explanation of why they think their governmental communications should be exempt from Public Records. I’ve left phone messages with our local reps.

We are seeking girls currently in 6th-11th grade to volunteer as Intern-Counselors and Counselors in Training at our summer camps. If you could pass on this opportunity to anyone who may be interested, it would be greatly appreciated!

Girls Rock Math’s internship program offers a two- or three-week position at one of our camps. Our counselors form an integral part of the camp, working with campers directly on math/art projects, playing games, singing songs, and acting as role models to campers. Our internship also offers many students excellent work experience, as their days include a break schedule, interaction with leadership, and staff meetings. All counselors are supervised by a certified teacher who runs the program, and there is an additional supervisor on site at all times.

Young women who are confident in math and who love working with young children are excellent candidates for our internship program. Great counselors don’t need to be incredibly accelerated in STEM subjects, just confident. Ideally, these applicants are interested in pursuing a STEM field in the future, have an interest in education and/or have experience working with children – even from babysitting or playing with younger siblings.

In Belvedere you should be great for the major network channels (4,5,7) and also 9. 13 could be tough unless you’re near the top of the hill, since it comes from across the Sound (toward Vashon). It’s a bit of a line of sight thing to get a good signal. You just might need a better antenna, or an outdoor one.

I just went down this rabbit hole to get the Olympics on channel 5, but made it work except on stormy days. I live on the “wrong side of the hill”, a few blocks West of the Junction. I had to upgrade to an old-school looking directional antenna mounted to my highest fence post, which is higher than my house.

I have a free omni-directional outdoor antenna if anyone wants it. A couple years old, but it’s good quality RCA with an inline signal amplifier. It’s this one http://a.co/3B4bsxX. If you want it email me justin(at)vanderpol(dot)org

My previous handymen I’ve relied on in the past have either changed careers or are completely booked for the next several months. So, I’m looking for reader recommendations of someone local who would be reliable and qualified to tackle basic home maintenance type jobs.

Currently have a need for someone to realign a front entry door – there’s a significant gap between the weather stripping and actual door.

    Thanks!
