Hi WSBland. I have a compost bin I’m selling and thought one of you might want it. I THINK this is the brand and style:

I’ll throw in some free spiders. $40. I’d also be willing to exchange for a Home Depot gift card.

Hi anonyme, bad air quality has been a recurring topic here on WSB, and the usual “suspect” is the Lafarge Cement Plant.

Whether that’s the case here or not, we of course don’t know.

Here is a relatively recent article from the Main Page, and has links to Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, where you can report the odor.

If it is from the Lafarge, that’s not good, obviously. But, I hope for your neighborhood’s sake, it’s that rather than a meth lab.

    Hope this helps.

My beloved puppy Henry got out of our yard yesterday while I was home for lunch. After frantically searching for him, and passing by three people who saw him but just let him keep going (thanks a lot) I found him about five blocks away being detained by four kind strangers. To those four people you have my undying gratitude. If anything would have happened to Henry I just don’t know what I would have done.

I hate the abandonded carts too.

I can think of only twice that I’ve taken Thriftway carts out of the lot, and I asked for a manager’s approval first in both cases.

First one was ten years ago this past Christmas Eve, and before I lived practically across the street fron them. Naturally, the store was slammed that day, and I had borrowed a co-worker’s car to pick up some stuff to make a simple Christmas dinner for a homebound friend of mine and myself at her house.

The parking lot was hopelessly jammed (this was before that old house was moved, opening up the back/side lot). I had to park on Holly Street next to McDonald’s. I promised I’d walk the cart right back, (and did), and the manager said “no problem”.

The other time was nearly two years ago, when I had (which I didn’t realize at the time) pneumonia, and couldn’t walk more than a few yards, without having to stop and catch my breath, and that was when I was empty handed. I told them how weak and sick I was, and that I couldn’t bring it right back, but told them exactly where I’d leave it by my building, and perhaps even one of the several Thriftway employees that live in my building could wheel it back on their way to work. I apologized profusely for any inconvenience, and once again they said “okay”. Of course, I suppose it helps to be a long time customer. :-)

If I see a Thriftway cart away from the store, and I’m going there, or at least near there, I’ll wheel it back to the store. But, yeah Sue, a little part of me always fears they’ll think I swiped it in the first place. But then again, being a regular customer, they’d probably believe me if I told them I’d found it abandoned. ;-)

I just spoke to the manager over at QFC (42nd/Alaska), and he advised that if anybody sees their carts around the neighborhood, to call customer service at (206) 923-6390. They have someone with a truck that can run by and pick them up. Unfortunately, he said that QFC doesn’t have any kind of security to keep the carts on the premises because that would then preclude the carts from being taken to the parking lots. Anyway, thought I’d pass this along in case anybody else sees carts around.

This was taken from my home on Friday evening. It’s approx 12″x12″x 5″. They did not get the keys so unless they went at it with a sledgehammer or blow torch I’m hoping they tossed it somewhere that it might be found.

I second the opinion that flash is unsuitable for developing webpages.

Sure I can see it after enabling scripting, but flash as well as reader and pretty much every Adobe program even with current updates, are considered major security risks.

Set that aside for a moment.

Usability and accessibility are destroyed by the urge for control by the designer. You can’t even cut and paste the contact info (or anything else) into another page or an email. Many people cannot use the “mailto”

function of the contact page since they use something other than the default version of outlook to read and send mail. I use “view source” regularly to make sure links are not redirected using alternate ip numbering variations.

The bottom line for me is, I refuse to buy anything from sites that use flash as the total site tool. I don’t mind flash being used as an *element* of a web site (since flashblock works fine), but using the main landing page as a massive animation means I click the back button immediately.

I assume phoenix only puts very low traffic sites on their shared hosting server since it currently has 156 other sites sharing the same IP.

I’m moving to West Seattle this week and would like to install a security system in our house ASAP. Can anyone recommend good local security companies?

For some reason, the alley behind the 5000 block of Fauntleroy (between Fauntleroy & 40th) has become a place for dumping shopping carts lately. Yesterday there were 2 of them. They mysteriously disappear, and then more come back. Interestingly, this did not start happening until QFC opened (no one abandoned Safeway carts here). We’re a little less than 1/2 mile from there.

I’m going to call QFC today to ask what they’d like done when we find them, and to suggest that perhaps they put in one of those security systems where cart wheels lock if they’re taken X distance from the premises. Sometimes if my husband is walking back up to the junction, he’ll wheel it back there, but I also don’t want him getting in trouble for being in possession of stolen property.

Just to be clear, this is not a QFC rant, but a rant that people feel they have a right to steal carts and just dump them in people’s bushes and alleys when they’re done with them. Half the time they even turn them upside down! I’ve never seen/heard anyone with them, or else I’d say something at the time. I’m just tired of people having no respect for other people’s property and treating our alley like their own personal garbage dump.

I’m reaching out to everyone to help make my fundraising goal for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to help cure blood cancers. I’m running another marathon as part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program! This season is dedicated to Skip Sand who recently passed away from leukemia and all who have been touched from cancer.

I will be doing the Eugene Marathon in two weeks. I’m attaching my website in case you would like to donate. Anything helps even five dollars.

    Thanks, Colleen :)

Shot weed looks much different when it goes to seed than when it just flowers. I did not realize at first from the photos that it was the same weed. I did not used to have it in this yard. Obviously it could have flown in from anywhere, but I am now suspicious of the compost/soil enhancers I have put down. Bummer!

On the “neighors with weeds” front, I put down some landscape fabric and kind of curved it up onto my fence. It helped to control the morning glory vines that were coming under the fence. It still required my pulling up the vines to some degree, but it atleast helped contain them (they would still run under the weedcloth). I considered putting in some sort of rigid metal or plastic “plate” vertically to stop them….but I never did! The landscape fabric lasted pretty well. we moved from that house after 4 years and it was still in place…although not 100% intact.

So, here’s the deal about what I learned, but not from the Dept of Exec. Admin, but SPD’s False Alarm Unit (684-7713). Not a biggie though, it’s really just semantics.

What Broadview Security calls an annual “alarm permit fee”, city of Seattle calls an “Annual Registration Fee”. So, some municipalities offer permit #’s to security companies to track owners of systems, our fair city requires system co.’s to provide a quarterly list of all customers within Seattle, which is kept by Revenue Dept. Also, SPD tracks records of all alarms, false or otherwise, responded to.

    TMI? :)

    squareeyes –

I’ve two cats similar to yours, the vet thinks they are at least part Maine Coon.

Last spring I made a mistake and asked for the wrong thing when I took them in for grooming.. they ended up with lion cuts.

Once they recovered from the initial shock (they are senior kittys, 14 years) – I think they actually enjoyed the short hair during the warm summer months. Their coats grew in just the same as before. I’m planning on having it done again this year.

Zeeks’ mission is to provide the premiere pizza experience to Northwest neighborhoods. Zeeks has six company-owned stores and two franchises in the greater Seattle area and is expanding. A Seattle institution since 1993, Zeeks is known for its high-quality, eclectic pizza and for restaurants and employees that are unpretentious, cool and fun. In addition to our full-service dining rooms, we offer delivery and slice-line service at all of our locations. Zeeks is also the greater Seattle area’s premier pizza catering service for businesses large and small. While we embrace the casual and fun nature of pizza, we are serious about the standards we apply to our food, the people who prepare and serve it and the performance of our business overall. Our aim is to attract positive and talented people to help us fulfill our mission and offer them support, community and opportunity.

Zeeks’ General Managers are the leaders of their store. They are responsible for all aspects of the restaurant’s operations. Also, to be effective, the General Manager will need to direct other people to achieve their goals. As such, General Managers must be able to communicate effectively and delegate. The ability to remain level-headed under stress and manage positively is key.

Evaluate staff performance and provide formal (written performance reviews, Manage by Objective (MBO) documents & Performance Notices) and informal feedback, consistent with Zeeks’ procedures.

Thanks, Muttley’s. I’ll give you a call. He LOVES being brushed, so it’s not a difficult job in that way, just really time consuming to do a thorough brushout. Plus, he likes to “dance” while you brush him, and without the proper setup you end up doing a little brushing in every room, so the mess can’t be confined.

    Fair warning, he’s a HUGE cat – about 25 pounds. :)

Some one called Seattle Animal Shelter telling them that they saw a kitten on the sidewalk across the street from Pet Elements. SAS called me to try and help, the kitten was gone. I know it can be a bit troubling to remove a kitten but it really is in the best interest of the kitten and the mom. I could have use the kitten to lure the mom and rescued all of them. Please contact FCAT and usually with in 30 minutes I can have some one there to help.

I have permission to set traps by the garage where the kitten was seen. If any one would like to watch a trap that would be great just email me at feraltrapping@gmail.com.
