Oh, I don’t think most of his points are valid, but I can’t recall hearing anyone else with similar views. I do agree with his assertion that we’ve been pushing our problems into the future for decades and we can’t afford to continue doing that indefinitely.

So, I was much more into sports at an early age and animals and the natural world, being a Cub Scout as soon as I could. Stuff like that.

I was a biology major and did tons of wildlife photography including insect macrophotography starting at age 14 and got published at age 15. So, no old rubber ducky memories and apparently, no significant rubber ducky exposure early in life. (Insects…. that explains it…)

I just had my concrete basement floor stained a couple months ago. I hired a guy named David Cates, who owns Maverick Specialty Contracting. His firm does staining of existing concrete in residential and commercial settings. He’s very experienced at this, having done it for many years, and he’s done some big commercial projects in addition to many homes.

I did my floor in a semi-transparent greenish/brownish kind of tone, and I absolutely love it. The process is quite straightforward: they grind off just a tiny bit off the top, to prepare the surface and smooth out rough spots. Then they apply the stain in a couple of coats, a sealer, and a non-glossy wax. The result is more “organic” than a painted floor — many of the imperfections in the concrete show through, but in a really cool way. Staining is not no-maintenance; it’s just low maintenance. And you can wash it down without losing color. The price is not that much different than stripping and painting, based on the bids I got.

Here’s the one part of the process that disappointed me. Because my project was relatively small, David subbed out the grinding part, and those guys did a terrible (as in non-existent) job of sealing off the rest of the house. It was a veritable dust storm, and I had to bring in professional cleaners. David was apologetic and reduced the bid to cover my cleaning cost, but I would have preferred that it had never happened.

Other than that, I am a very happy customer. I definitely recommend him, just be careful about who handles the grinding, and don’t rely on them to seal off your house from the dust. Do it yourself.

Newfangled machines!

Comcast here (again)today.Verdict: there is no way that ONE remote control can be used for my TV. This is the 3rd trip out to do this. This TV is about a year old.

Apparently all 37+ codes Comcast has mean the TV manufacturer is to blame. Thing is this TV worked when it was in a different room with one remote control so I know this isn’t the problem.

I am so disgusted but every person has a different solution. This one was going to be $8 a month more, to swap out the black box for a new black box. I was willing to pay it just so I wouldn’t have to use one to turn the tv on, and another to change the channel, then back to the first one for volume….

And we can go onto the computer and look at someone’s backyard in another country!

I need a cure!

out of respect for you, i watched the entire 20 minutes of that interview…

i would point out the historical perspective first…

that David Stockman was the engineer of the 3 decades of policy that he is now condemning…

that he profitted greatly by those policies

and that for him austerity will mean that he has to fly first class instead of on a private Lear jet..

I would also point out that although he had a great deal to say about debt..

he said almost nothing about revenue…

without employment there is no revenue…

it’s that simple.

And 10% unemployment doesn’t even begin to tell the story of the reduction in taxable wages…

nor did he mention the fraudulent and profiteering business practices that bankrupted the pensions middle class Americans counted on for their retirement.

David Stockman thinks a “period” of 10% unemployment is a necessary evil for others..

while he takes mega fees for “economic consulting” from the news industry…

he thinks austerity in public policy which translates as more deferred maintenance for infrastructure, less spending on education and a smaller safety net for America’s needy is the answer…

while clearly protected from the effects of that austerity himself.

His message is basically

you guys need to tighten your belts

He did say one thing i agreed with..

and that is that in the rush for profit

and ever expanding profit centers

America has forgotten about business..

well.. at least i will give him the benefit of doubt that he implied that while talking about the banking system…

Of course, there’s no way to dispute Smitty Logic, because after all those pre-recessionary layoffs and cut-backs the economy is almost sure to go down anyway. Then Smitty can just point to the unemployment lines and say: See? I told you this was going to happen!

Smitty, strategic business planning is a good thing. I’m not saying employers should wait until they go into the red to respond to a slumping economy. But laying off people in anticipation of a recession seems like it could easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Think of it like a bunch of bank depositors making a run on the bank based on a rumor that the bank was going to fail.

I don’t know about you, but raising taxes doesn’t sound like a very good way to get people to start spending again – which is exactly what it’s going to take to get us out of this vicious cycle.

Until people like Carson start investing their welfare checks on things like beer and smokes – rather than investing in the crooked stock market – we are in big, big trouble.

Had to dig this thread back up to rave about Ross myself. I have had a series of bad haircuts and not only did Ross clean the mess up, but it’s one of the best haircuts I’ve ever had. To top it off he seemed to actually listen to what I wanted and was a blast to talk to! I’ll definitely be back!

I’ve had QWest for years and found them to be among the dirtiest, most deceitful companies around, with the absolute worst customer service. If you can avoid them, do. I don’t know that Comcast is any better; it seems as if there are few good, ethical business choices any more, especially in the communications industry.

JoB- I thought this thread was about a state income tax and state tax reform in general. I believe these are much more contentious issues and warrant deeper dscussion than 1098 alone.

HMC Rich- my experience is that once enacted taxes increase more often than decrease. Unless this can be addressed with a pretty iron clad plan to mitgate future increases, people will remain skeptical of any income tax. Some will even vote against one that may actually be in their immediate best interest, i.e. 1098 for non-wealthy property owners.

DP- to your point about not being ready for a larger discussion of what is fair in society, like fair wages for certain jobs, people have been discussing ideology for ages. I think it is a lot harder to change a person’s opinion of right and wrong, or fair and unfair, than it is to gain consensus on the best resolution to a single issue. Of course if both sides only approach the issue with idealogical arguments rather than say a cost/benefit analysis, consensus is pretty hard to reach.

As near as I can tell, the whole concept of Fiber optic to the curb via qwest was a “pump up the stock price for the merger” advertising ploy twisting the assumed meaning for several plain english words.

Comcast is not fiber to the curb either.

I don’t watch much tv but I did see some obviously BS ads in August implying that the fiber qwest has to some of their non CO copper distribution points somehow made their DSL faster… There may be fiber to the curb in some market qwest serves but it ain’t this one.

Copper is regulated, paid for and supplies nearly all the monthly recurring revenues Qwest and the new company Centurylink are using to justify their stock swap. There is no compelling reason to actually invest in fiber that can be run to homes in this market.

If comcast was not such a thieving, lying sack of crap they could be doing some serious damage to qwest / centurylink dsl service here.

Fiber-optics exists from the neighborhood terminal to the Internet. Speed tiers of 7 Mbps and lower are provided over fiber optics in selected areas only.

The Community Orchard of West Seattle (COWS) is currently seeking a part-time Orchard Manager to help ensure the successful development of its quarter-acre, non-profit orchard on the grounds of South Seattle Community College. Using organic, permaculture techniques, The Community Orchard will grow a much needed, free source of local fruit for neighbors and local food security programs while providing a venue for free public agricultural education and community gathering.

The Orchard Manager will be responsible for:

– Executing the Orchard’s workplan as well as instructions from the Orchard’s Steering Committee;

– Ensuring that all aspects of orchard development remain on schedule and on budget;

– Recruiting a strong and diverse base of volunteers and community supporters;

– Managing those volunteers in various aspects of orchard development;

– Knowledge of organic, permaculture techniques

This piece was interesting. It highlights the past accusations and the false accusations Dino has experienced. It also shows that he is a successful business man.

If you don’t like him, so be it. But he understands business and if he is bringing in wealthier people, then he has helped the tax revenues and the government. ;) Yup, he brought in more revenue that Chris Gregoire used to help out the public sector unions.

The good news is that there is a big difference between Mrs. Murray and Mr. Rossi.

Useless Trivia. No. History. It shows that people and governments can make a small decision that can start a trend. Government is needed to keep the free market relatively fair. But when governments make bad decisions, we are all hurt.

You can also blame Tobacco for this too. Since owners wanted to stop training new indentured servants they found a way to enslave people.

Racism, I look more at individuals and “their content of character” more so than just the color of their skin. Fortunately when I was young a black person straightened me out quickly on stereotypes. You may call me racist but I am not the one forcibly grouping people together. Everyone is unique. Certain cultures have unique features. Some good, some bad. Have I ever been prejudiced against a person, Yes. Have I received prejudice from people? A few times but nothing that compares to what others have gone through. Empower people, and fans of the Green Bay Packers. Wait, I do have some hate in me. For the Vikings and Bears.
