The death penalty deters people who are calm and rational. Not so good when people are not of sound mind and judgement. I must admit, I was not sad when Jeffrey Dahmer was offed by the prison population in Wisconsin.
I went on a trip that year. I was in Indianapolis when the Mike Tyson, Desiree Washington issue happened. I was in Milwaukee when they caught Dahmer. I am just glad Ed Guin didn’t reincarnate that trip.

the proposed income tax affects only a very small percentage of the voters in washington
but the tax breaks that homeowners will get affect everyone.
the majority of voters unfairly pay more than their fair share of their incomes to support the state…
put that way… i am guessing this resonates with the majority of voters far more than those who want to defeat this tax would like to admit.
no wonder those who would defeat this measure want us to focus on cutting taxes and shrinking government
My objection to the 2.6% vs 17% fairness argument, and confining the argument to WA only, is that I don’t think it will ever convince non-believers that tax reform is needed. If someone already thinks they pay too much in taxes, do they really care if their contribution to WA is disproportionate to their income, and not fair?
I routinely hear cut taxes and shrink government uttered in the same breath by people who feel overtaxed. Hearts and minds campaigns are destined to fail if one isn’t willing to speak that same language as the audience.
My son takes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from Cindy at Sleeper Athletics and I couldn’t be more happy with the program. Cindy is so good with the kids and my son has learned so much. Currently he is learning Jiu Jitsu, but Cindy also teaches Boxing and Wrestling.
I am so impressed with how she works with children of all ages and sizes and they all seem to get something great out of each lesson. And there are so many opportunities to get to a class. There is something going on almost every day. Cindy is totally family oriented and often times parents train with her too.
My son was very shy and kinda wimpy when he started and was very emotional. He has changed so much since then and I cannot believe how confident and happy he is now.
I just can’t believe such a program exists and the price is very reasonable. It’s only $100 a month. I wanted to let everyone know about this over here in West Seattle because I would like to get some carpooling going. Sleeper Athletics is in Georgetown in the Tully’s building.

Anyway, Smitty, what exactly do you think the graph you linked to shows? I believe you’re offering these stats as proof that Obama is exacerbating the recession, but to me, this inverted bell curve suggests that Obama is gradually pulling us out of slump that Bush got us into. (Take another look. Can you see the correlation there?)
Personally, I don’t believe there’s that strong of a correlation between presidents and employment levels, but even if I did believe in such a correlation, this graph shows that unemployment is coming down steadily under Obama. Is that what you wanted to us to take away from this?

I’m not claiming federal taxes have any impact on the deficit in WA, and I am not taking a pro or con stance on a state income tax. There is a spectrum of contributions, through taxes, that supports city, county, state, and federal services. Some groups pay more, proportionally, to one level of government than another, but everyone is paying something at some level. It seems to me that debates about taxes always come down to what is fair. If that is going to be the crux of the debate I just don’t think one can’t look at WA taxes in a vacuum.
Summary of the annual Seattle Bike Counts at the intersection of California and Alaska 6:30-9:00 am 9/15/10:
Total Cyclists: 32, including 6 kids
Male: 22 or 68.8%
Female: 10 or 31.2%
* Drivers running red light (includes those turning on “No Turn on Red” – the vast majority of illegal turns were made by drivers turning east onto Alaska from northbound California): 35
* Drivers making illegal left turn: 3
* Pedestrians walking against Don’t Walk: 15
* Cyclist running red or crossing against Don’t Walk: 4 (only one cyclist “blew” a red light. The other 3 were sidewalk riders crossing like a jaywalker.)
Of those making illegal intersection maneuvers, drivers made up 67%, pedestrians 26%, and cyclists 7%.
54% of the red light runs by drivers occurred between 7:45 – 8:15, when the intersection was the busiest.
% cyclists on sidewalk: 25%
% of cyclists wearing helmets: 90.6% or 91%
Based on my numbers, I would say the red light running motor vehicles are a bigger concern than cyclists riding without helmets.
So, this has taken a strange turn. I provided general info about Penny (my friend) in hopes of painting an accurate and lovely picture of exactly who she was to her “cousin”, with friendly intent.

JoB; What I would like an answer to (and maybe it doesn’t matter since I am being opaque about some details) are:
1) How did the paperboy (uc_booker) know how to contact Penny’s “cousin” (see original email) if he didn’t even know the names of his relatives?
(That is what sparked pdxbear’s curiosity about his “cousin”…”he was contacted recently by the paperboy who found her…”) It wasn’t the member of the family that was looking for her originally, the paperboy contacted pdxbear…supposedly.
2) It seems to me that the paperboy has and would have had all the information pdxbear would have wondered about with regard to his “cousin”.
3) Why hasn’t pdxbear joined in any of the lively conversations? Would have answered alot of questions that have come up….again, making it quite odd.
I almost wish that a permit was required to prune street trees, or that the work had to be done by a licensed arborist. The reason is that I’ve seen so many street trees so badly butchered, some even cut in half so that only a 5 foot column of dying trunk remains. On 30th Ave SW there used to be a row of lovely Styrax japonica (Japanese Snowbell)that this was done to, no doubt by the owner of the adjacent property. To make that situation worse, the reason the trees were crowded was because that property itself was so overgrown that it completely blocked the sidewalk. The trees were an easy kill.

I have an email in to them to ask about the expiration date – it currently says it’s effective from 9/17/10 to 12/31/09 which is very obviously an error. Fortunately this deal is effective for another 38 hours so they can fix it before buying.
I do recall way back in the 1980’s the Catholic Church took out a full page ad in the paper asking for dialogue with the pro-choice people, saying we should start that dialogue by going through the items we can all agree on. Point #1: abortion is murder. …… I was amazed at that. A complete waste of ink.
But back to the death penalty. I see it as a morality issue. I’d like to think that if we, as a people, can all agree that taking a life is wrong, it will percolate down through our culture and result in a lower murder rate than what we have now. That would be a win-win.

I was walking through Schmitz Park a couple of years ago and a bird spotting guy with binoculars, the vest and everything, was looking the park over. He said it was the time of year for certain (forgot which ones) birds migrating through here, starting from their home in S. America. He suggested it was a regular deal that lasted for 2 or so weeks. There were some little yellow ones at the time.
