I recently read that the average Longshoreman salary is $147,000 per year and crane operators make over $300,000 per year. Perhaps we could all chip in to help pay them better to end the work slow-down.

Hi all. Has anyone had any experience with a non-invasive leak detection company for a radiant floor heating system? Mine is loosing pressure so I think I have a leak somewhere but it hasn’t started to show in a ceiling or wall yet. I’m closing off each zone one by one to see if I can at least isolate it to a floor but obviously need to find the issue.

pros- pretty good schools, the whole ferry experience is great for fostering independence, safe environment, lots of nice kids and parents

cons- can be hard socially if all of the activities are on-island, the ferry can be a pain if the parents need to go to meetings and games and whatnot (not to mention they play games on the peninsula too), getting rides to and from the ferry on the Vashon side is a hassle for kids if for whatever reason (eg. sports practices) they can’t get the school bus

bottom line: The ferry is a double-edged sword. Schools are good but went a bit downhill over the years in our experience and I’m not sure they’re that much better than the local schools, which seem to be improving a lot. It can be a great experience for some but it’s not for everyone.

I’m a West Seattle mom trying to research middle school options. My top requirements are team athletics and an appreciation for STEM. I have ruled out Madison/WSHS (I don’t respect SPS) Holy Rosary (too religious) Westside School (has both but can’t count on getting admitted) West Seattle Academy (meets neither requirement)and Explorer West.(Has athletics but no STEM.) Recently I have discovered Vashon Island public schools and it seems like the answer. But I would really like to hear from some of the 150 student families who commute there from here each day. Are any of you out there? How do you like it? What are some pros and cons? Thank you!

So sorry for your loss. When our pets go, they leave a huge hole in our lives. I used to walk by an apartment building with a marble slab near the front walkway. It said: “Jacques – Sleep well my friend.” Although I never knew Jacques, I still hope he is sleeping well every time I walk by that apartment, although the slab disappeared some years ago when the apartment was remodeled.

The best metaphor I’ve ever read for how vaccines work, at least if you’ve ever played D&D and know what it means, is that vaccination increases your saving throw vs. infection. ;) For instance, I got the flu shot this year, and still caught the flu, though the shot may have helped decrease the severity of my illness (I was only sick for four days).

It is true that some vaccinations lose effectiveness over time–that’s why we get boosters for tetanus and whooping cough, for example. And viral mutation is why the flu shot is different every year, and varies in effectiveness. The measles vaccination is of long duration and the virus basically hasn’t mutated at all (good thing too, considering how incredibly infectious measles is).

I’ve had side effects from vaccinations, too. For one of my trips to Asia I got five vaccinations in a single day, and spent most of that evening feeling feverish and tired. I’ll take that over catching avian flu, typhoid, or hepatitis any day.

Safe and effective, standard FDA lingo for medications and vaccines has never meant 100% safe and 100% effective. It means there has been testing which has been accepted as evidence for a range of safety and effectiveness. In most instances, the manufacturer’s product inserts are also available online and will present the frequency of specific side effects noted in the clinical trials. I’ve noted over the years that dizziness is a side effect reported for nearly every medication I’ve looked up. In many instances, the incidence of dizziness is the same as it is for placebo.

I think the most important thing to check into is drug interactions and contraindications more than side effects in general. That provides much more helpful information to identify specific factors like another medication or an underlying condition that will increase the likelihood for an adverse reaction to whatever item you’re looking into.

I regard that as using science to inform a decision even though as I said at the outset, nothing is 100% anything is this realm. Someone previously said the flu vaccine this year doesn’t work. That’s not accurate; it doesn’t work as well as would have been expect if the predominant viral strain hadn’t mutated. But even if it were a perfect match, the efficacy is maybe 80% at best if I remember correctly, could be somewhat less.

So my only neighbors have been throwing all sorts of garbage out their windows and into my backyard (and theirs) for several years now. Mostly the kids I think. Today I saw a pizza box back there, went out and threw it back over the fence. When I went inside I looked out and witnessed the girl (teenager) obviously and intentionally toss a bag of chips right where the pizza box was…..grrrr.

I went next door and tried to talk to her. She denied it and shut the door in my face. The parents are mostly non-existent/don’t care.

Do any of you have experience dealing with situations like this? We’ve been taking photos and I’ve been searching online for the last hour and have a couple leads (DPD?) but would really appreciate some help!

They are Seattle Housing Authority tenants and this is only one of many issues.

    Thank you!

Below is a copy and pasted post from another local forum I am a member of. The gentlemen is a molecular biologist and explains the toxic issues. I am not posting it in defense of anti-vaccination as I believe The benefits of vaccinations far outweigh the risk, just thought it was good info on the subject that is easy to understand. Sorry, it’s a long one

“So my wife calls me before work from good ole Mississippi (on a work trip to one of their engine plants) and tells me Rand Paul had an interview with some ditz about mandatory vaccines. I’ve been busy at work so have not been paying attention to news and haven’t had time to login here for a while. I was amazed at the idiots and the idiotic statements I saw when looking at the media hype. When Doc closed the other vaccine thread, I had a few people PM me saying thanks for the scientific data I had posted so I thought I would post a new thread to just focus on the Toxic effects of vaccine ingredients. Vaccines do work, the science is sound. The issue these days is what the companies put in them and how the viral material is grown. If they had no adjuvants or preservatives (which means they would need to be fresh and can’t sit for a long time), they would be much better.

I had a feeling this Influenza season as well as the crap I saw with Ebola, would end with a hysteria about vaccines, even though the Flu vaccine didn’t work. I was surprised it came up as a Measles hysteria though. We had the Ebola hysteria, which I tried to tell people was a joke. As a Molecular Biologist, who works with infectious viral samples, I saw all the hype on TV and could see the ignorance about the disease transmission and actual chances of contagion, unless it had mutated more than any vaccine has so quickly.

For those who never read my other posts, I am currently a Molecular Biologist, and just happen to be testing HPV tonight. Have been in Molecular for 6 years and before that I was a Toxicologist for 20 years. Did research in Tox as well, attended Pathology conferences in DC, trips to NIH, offered head of R&D at Research Triangle Park in NC (which I turned down to stay in Seattle). In College I was leaning towards either being Pathologist or get my PhD in Immunology. So I have been thoroughly trained in drugs, toxins, immunological responses, disease states, etc. I also consulted with MD’s and Pathologists as well as Poison Control when they had questions concerning drug interactions, overdose, etc.

I want to mainly show data on Toxic, adverse effects because I keep hearing from people who do not know anything about drugs or their effects say vaccines are totally safe. They also say they are totally effective, which is not correct. A vaccine will normally decrease your chances of getting an infection, if you are healthy. It does not always do that for a myriad of reasons. One big reason is a virus can mutate but also a vaccine (due to adjuvants) will decrease your immune system for a period of time. It can be a shock when you inject aluminum to stimulate a response and when you use multiple viral types (as in a quad vaccine, MMR, etc). Lastly, many vaccines are attenuated (live virus used) and if not processed correctly, they can contain strands of infectious viral material. You can also end up with other types of virus from the cells they are grown in.

As to toxic substances in vaccines, you can easily find sites that list them but CDC also lists some of them. Thimerosal contains mercury (ethyl vs methyl) but the normal pediatric vaccines do not contain it any longer. I believe all of the the multi organism shots do still. I saw a site somewhere that listed the compounds and will try to find it again.

    http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vac-gen/additives.htm

To the main point: knowing what the toxic substances are really doesn’t matter though. If you are looking at a vaccine because the risk of infection is greater than any risk from toxins or even other viral material from the cells (monkey, bovine, etc) that the virus is grown in, you should ALWAYS look at the manufacturers insert. It must contain adverse reactions they have found. Different manufacturers make different vaccines and there are many different ways to make them so some are safer than others. Make an educated and logical decision. Don’t believe anyone, even me. Read for yourself. We spend all kinds of time protecting ourselves by studying guns. We should do the same with health. Some day you may have to protect yourself with a firearm. You will die someday of a disease or of old age so why not spend some time on learning health issues also?

Inserts can be requested from any pharmacy but here are a couple sites. One is from John’s Hopkins. I’ll also list some of the adverse reactions from Merck’s MMR II insert since the hysteria seems to be about Measles.

Basic Toxicology states that non-toxic substances (in normal doses, not overloading a bodily system), will cause no adverse reactions. If a substance causes any adverse reactions, it means there is something in it that is causing the damage to an organ or system. Either the person cannot handle the chemical, virus, metal, animal cells, etc or the damage is caused by substances which are listed toxins (mercury, formaldehyde).

MMR II ( a Live vaccine) adverse reactions, from Merck Insert:

    http://www.merck.com/product/usa/pi_circulars/m/mmr_ii/mmr_ii_pi.pdf

    ADVERSE REACTIONS

The following adverse reactions are listed in decreasing order of severity, without regard to causality, within each body system category and have been reported during clinical trials, with use of the marketed vaccine, or with use of monovalent or bivalent vaccine containing measles, mumps, or rubella:

    Body as a Whole

Panniculitis; atypical measles; fever; syncope; headache; dizziness; malaise; irritability.

    Cardiovascular System

    Vasculitis.

    Digestive System

    Pancreatitis; diarrhea; vomiting; parotitis; nausea.

    Endocrine System

    Diabetes mellitus.

    Hemic and Lymphatic System

    Thrombocytopenia (see WARNINGS, Thrombocytopenia); purpura; regional lymphadenopathy;

    leukocytosis.

    Immune System

Anaphylaxis and anaphylactoid reactions have been reported as well as related phenomena such as angioneurotic edema (including peripheral or facial edema) and bronchial spasm in individuals with or without an allergic history.

    Musculoskeletal System

    Arthritis; arthralgia; myalgia.

Arthralgia and/or arthritis (usually transient and rarely chronic), and polyneuritis are features of infection with wild-type rubella and vary in frequency and severity with age and sex, being greatest in adult females and least in prepubertal children. This type of involvement as well as myalgia and paresthesia, have also been reported following administration of MERUVAX II.

Chronic arthritis has been associated with wild-type rubella infection and has been related to persistent virus and/or viral antigen isolated from body tissues. Only rarely have vaccine recipients developed chronic joint symptoms.

Following vaccination in children, reactions in joints are uncommon and generally of brief duration. In women, incidence rates for arthritis and arthralgia are generally higher than those seen in children (children: 0-3%; women: 12-26%),{17,56,57} and the reactions tend to be more marked and of longer duration. Symptoms may persist for a matter of months or on rare occasions for years. In adolescent girls, the reactions appear to be intermediate in incidence between those seen in children and in adult women. Even in women older than 35 years, these reactions are generally well tolerated and rarely interfere with normal activities.

    Nervous System

Encephalitis; encephalopathy; measles inclusion body encephalitis (MIBE) (see CONTRAINDICATIONS); subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE); Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS); acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM); transverse myelitis; febrile convulsions; afebrile convulsions or seizures; ataxia; polyneuritis; polyneuropathy; ocular palsies; paresthesia.

Experience from more than 80 million doses of all live measles vaccines given in the U.S. through 1975 indicates that significant central nervous system reactions such as encephalitis and encephalopathy, occurring within 30 days after vaccination, have been temporally associated with measles vaccine very rarely.{58} In no case has it been shown that reactions were actually caused by vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has pointed out that “a certain number of cases of encephalitis may be expected to occur in a large childhood population in a defined period of time even when no vaccines are administered”. However, the data suggest the possibility that some of these cases may have been caused by measles vaccines. The risk of such serious neurological disorders following live measles virus vaccine administration remains far less than that for encephalitis and encephalopathy with wild-type measles (one per two thousand reported cases).

    Post-marketing surveillance of the more than 200 million doses of M-M-R and M-M-R II that have been distributed worldwide over 25 years (1971 to 1996) indicates that serious adverse events such as encephalitis and encephalopathy continue to be rarely reported.{17}

    There have been reports of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) in children who did not have a history of infection with wild-type measles but did receive measles vaccine. Some of these cases may have resulted from unrecognized measles in the first year of life or possibly from the measles vaccination. Based on estimated nationwide measles vaccine distribution, the association of SSPE cases to measles vaccination is about one case per million vaccine doses distributed. This is far less than the association with infection with wild-type measles, 6-22 cases of SSPE per million cases of measles. The results of a retrospective case-controlled study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest that the overall effect of measles vaccine has been to protect against SSPE by preventing measles with its inherent higher risk of SSPE.{59}

Cases of aseptic meningitis have been reported to VAERS following measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination. Although a causal relationship between the Urabe strain of mumps vaccine and aseptic meningitis has been shown, there is no evidence to link Jeryl LynnTM mumps vaccine to aseptic meningitis.

    Respiratory System

Pneumonia; pneumonitis (see CONTRAINDICATIONS); sore throat; cough; rhinitis.

    Skin

Stevens-Johnson syndrome; erythema multiforme; urticaria; rash; measles-like rash; pruritis.

Local reactions including burning/stinging at injection site; wheal and flare; redness (erythema); swelling; induration; tenderness; vesiculation at injection site.

    Special Senses — Ear

    Nerve deafness; otitis media.

    Special Senses — Eye

Retinitis; optic neuritis; papillitis; retrobulbar neuritis; conjunctivitis.

    Urogenital System

    Epididymitis; orchitis.

    Other

Death from various, and in some cases unknown, causes has been reported rarely following vaccination with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines; however, a causal relationship has not been established in healthy individuals (see CONTRAINDICATIONS).”

The woman in the article uses a lot of the same arguments that the organic food and anti-GMO folks use. It essentially boils down to a fear that vaccines are “unnatural”, and therefore suspect.

I think this quote displays that sentiment best:

‘I looked at the ingredients of these shots and said, “There’s no way I’m going to allow anyone to inject this cocktail of chemicals and toxins into my child’s body.”‘

The suggestion that “chemicals” are bad is the same argument used against ingredient labels on food.

The size of a word is in no way linked to it’s level of toxicity.

What she is implying is that, although she researched the science, she doesn’t believe the test results showing the ingredients are safe. She is instead choosing to select only the information that supports her point of view.

Unfortunately, due to all the quack information available on vaccines, she can find plenty of evidence to support her position.

I notice this article is from last May. I wonder if she’s changed her opinion since the measles outbreak..

Well there are a couple of problems. One is that the lane width (and lane discipline) here in Seattle sucks, another is that it often leads to motorcycles getting to the front at red lights and then having to zip away because the driver in the car feels they shouldn’t have jumped the line. Another problem is that some drivers will often try a maneuver to discourage a motorcycle lane splitting. I would say in Seattle this would be a very frequent problem even more than other cities. Also slow lane splitting is a bit tough because the motorbike is tougher to handle (avoid potholes and other obstacles) at slow speed and it increases the possibility that drivers will do their anti-splitting reaction. In most cases it is often safer for a motorcycle to swerve rather than any attempt at stopping where you need the bike to be upright and you need to plant your feet on the ground. From a bikers point of view if I can do so safely I would like the option of lane splitting mainly because stop and go commute on a motorbike REALLY sucks.

It’s a short article and I don’t have a lot of time today, but my conclusions are that:

    a) she doesn’t understand how vaccines work,

    b) she doesn’t understand how herd immunity works, and

    c) she doesn’t understand how statistics work.

(Are side effects possible from vaccines? Yes. Are they higher than the serious health risks from vaccine-preventable illnesses? No.)

In conclusion, I really, really hope her kids don’t catch measles.

Rowsea – I wasn’t asking for an off leash area in Lincoln Park. I’m asking for people who obviously want at least one more than the “too far away, too busy” Westcrest park, to CREATE another OLA or two.

The problem would certainly be mitigated to some degree by having at least one more centrally located park. I don’t have a dog in this fight OTHER than I’m way past f*cking FED UP with the lazy asses who can’t be bothered to actually DO ANYTHING about the issue that they’ve created.

Their opinions on this subject are 100% discounted down to ZERO until they bother to look in the fricking mirror and realize they’re the problem. Not me, who doesn’t own a dog. And not the people who bother to actually abide by the law.

Personally, I’d like to see each and every one of the off leashers get a ticket every damn day until they do something.

Your air, soil and water pollution comparisons are great arguments, I just don’t understand why you are directing them at me. In my original post I said:

“I’m not as worried about the water and air pollution from a meltdown thousands of miles away as by the potential of one here with Puget Sound Energy or some other company in charge.”

Now, that statement was triggered by your statements about Fukushima, but pollution from nuclear reactors isn’t my concern. You aren’t diminishing the threat to ground water from cooling pond leaks, are you?

This discussion begins with the trend of resisting scientific evidence after you posted a National Geographic article about a PEW poll on the subject.

My statements are meant to cast doubt on what the poll shows. Concerning the current measles outbreak, much has been made of the campaign against immunizations using the “findings” of one discredited study.

From interviews with doctors I’ve heard and read, parents who haven’t had their kids vaccinated aren’t as anti-immunization as they are ignorant of the way immunization works. They don’t understand the herd effect of protecting a population. Those people aren’t against science, they don’t understand it in this case.

I think nuclear power could lead to a fantastic amelioration of climate change.

I remember sitting in a classroom in 1954 watching an educational film about nuclear energy. The benefits of nuclear power were strongly emphasized and the conclusion of the movie was a shot of children literally dancing among homes and businesses using all the electricity the wiring could accommodate. Cooling ponds and reactor failures weren’t mentioned, as I recall.

My take on energy production (all production really) as a whole, producers really seem to keep profits up by skimping on safety and minimizing health risks.

As it appears now, we will have no choice but to utilize nuclear power at this stage of global warming. Survival trumps safety.

Why not be safe and survive?

One ‘clean’ way of doing them in at their source once you’ve found where they’re coming out of the ground:

Bring a large pot of water to a heavy boil and add a couple cups of salt to it, slowly pour the mixture on their exit point AND around that area.

The boiling-hot water will immediately scold the live ants to death, the salt will attach itself to any eggs in the nest and the new-hatches will eat it and subsequently die.

You may need to repeat this procedure again in a few days, but believe me it works!!!

After which, if you choose to wring your hands together and make some sort of evil chuckling sound, that adds to the satisfaction!!

I came out to my car after a long day at work recently to find a note stating that the neighbors would appreciate it if I wouldn’t use that spot if I was an employee of a nearby business. They went on to say that they had spoken to the management of said business and that they would make sure their employees complied…….Really? Really!

So now not only do I have someone telling me I can’t park in an unzoned all day spot but if I do, they’ll call my boss and have me move. Amd my store is enforcing this. Really.

The next day I decided I wanted to KEEP my job so I “complied” like a good employee and found parking elsewhere but boy it was pretty slim pickins the next day too!

I squeezed my tiny car in as best as I could into a spot that had a very wide driveway entrance and admittedly I technically had a tiny bit of my front bumper not clearing the curb completely but it did NOT impede any vehicle of any size from being able to come or go as it wished. Well…. I got off work THAT day and there was not only a $47 parking infraction for “Blocking a Driveway” but TWO notes from the resident stating they are going to tow me…. One of the notes was under the ticket and the other one was crumpled into my side mirror and the mirror was shoved forward to close it in as if it had been hit.

I’m feeling really bummed that the neighbors I serve DAILY at the store I work for are being this way.

I have empathy for homeowners who feel their parking is being taken up by others who work in the area but the neighborhood is growing FAST and people better start getting used to it.

The neighbors VOTED IN the zoned parking where I’d normally park making it necessary to park where you live so I guess that didn’t work out so hot did it?

My hope is that people won’t be so quick to complain about things like this because most of the residents were SO excited about the new things going in and now its spinning out of control…..

Just wait until that LA fitness and the condos go in!

    Good Times!
