If you get your TV signal over the air through an antenna, the first move in the TV repack (all channels must move off of channels 37 and above) happened today.
The low power repeater station for KBTC Tacoma (the Bates Public TV station) moved their frequency from RF 16 to RF 28. They transmit from a tower on Capitol Hill with 1000 watts. If you were receiving this station before this afternoon it has probably disappeared from your channel lineup. Go into your TV’s menu and re-scan the channels or add it manually. It will still show up as “28-1” with three additional sub channels. If you re-scan you may also notice that channel “6-1” shows up. They are currently transmitting color bars from a tower on Queen Anne hill. Can you kind folks help me by calling SDOT to make this request?
I’m very concerned about the likelihood of someone getting hit at the new crosswalk at Fauntleroy and Alaska, especially with WF opening soon. I have seen many cars making a right on red there and nearly hitting pedestrians (including me). When I called SDOT, I was sent this response from William Burns:
“A driver failing to yield for pedestrians is a common complaint received by SDOT. SDOT encourages pedestrian awareness when crossing a street, whether in a marked crosswalk or at an unmarked intersection. Drivers may be inattentive, reckless, or impaired and a pedestrian should be very aware of any vehicle at or nearing the intersection. Thankfully, in the last three years there were no reported pedestrian collisions at Fauntleroy Way SW and SW Alaska Street.
We will continue to monitor this location, and make modifications if they are warranted in the future.”
He’s putting the onus on pedestrians and clearly won’t do anything until someone gets hurt. He doesn’t realize there haven’t been any issues in the last few years because that crosswalk is relatively new!
Please call SDOT and request a ‘no turn on red’ sign at the intersection so they realize more people than just me are concerned about this. (206) 684-7623

I was just out walking my pup. A well behaved and quiet German Shepherd. We had him on his leash, requisite poop bags at the ready.
We live in Fauntleroy and often take him down to the little public access beach in Brace Point to watch the sunset. Tonight, it was after sunset (darn early fall evenings…) so although it was before 9:00, it was still fully dark. The home to the south of the access has a dog that barks from time to time, and he was going strong tonight. Suddenly a woman, that I assume lives there, briskly informed us that the beach access is “daytime only” and that dogs are not allowed at the beach (in spite of the sign stating that they must be on a leash). I didn’t make much fuss, and my wife and I left with our pooch, but I did mention on the way out that the sign only indicated that dogs must be leashed, and there was nothing about them being forbidden. Also, there didn’t seem to be any hours of access posted. She responded with something about a city ordinance.
So is she right, that we should not have been there? I’ve lived here for 20 years and have not run into this before.
University of Washington researchers are conducting an experiment to see how Seattle’s terrain affects earthquake shaking, and they need your help finding station hosts in West Seattle.
When an earthquake happens, the strength of shaking you feel depends on many factors, including the dirt right under your feet. For example, soft, water-logged soils typically shake harder than solid, stiff bedrock. With a good understanding of these local site and soil conditions, scientists can predict how strongly the ground will shake during an earthquake. Recent studies of earthquake records have shown that terrain, like cliffs, ridges, and hills, can amplify shaking in special situations. Now, as part of a UW study, researchers would like to see how Seattle’s terrain could affect shaking from local earthquakes.
To do this research, we will rely on the ambient seismic noise that is always gently shaking our city’s cliffs and hills. Seismometers placed on a hillside will record ambient vibrations caused by ocean waves, weather systems, and even car traffic. Together, these sources create what’s known as ambient seismic noise. By comparing recordings of this noise between seismometers at the top and bottom of a hill, we can also understand how the hill will amplify ground shaking in a real earthquake.
For our experiment, we are looking for hosts in West Seattle living near the bluffs along Alki. Ideally, hosts would live on or between Sunset Ave. SW and Alki Ave. SW. We also need a few sites in the neighborhood away from the sea bluff (see the map in the sign-up link). The experiment itself will last just 1 day, and only requires access to your yard, where we will plop-down a coffee-can sized seismometer for a few hours. The experiment will take place some time between early October and late November.
If you are interested in hosting a seismometer for this study, please fill out the form below.
Link to sign-up form is HERE!
If you would like some more information about our research, the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network published a blog post about the experiment as well. You may also send any questions to the project lead, Ian Stone, at ipstone@uw.edu
