    Topic: LOST parties?

    in forum Open Discussion

    HEY!

So when I was away at college in Los Angeles, like many Americans I fell in-love with LOST. Many of my classmates did as well. It was great. We would all gather together on Wednesday nights (now Thursdays) and excitedly bite our fingernails over the hour-long weekly action/drama.

Oh how do I miss that.

Now I watch by my lonesome, not having any Seattle friends who care as passionatly about Jack and Kate and Sawyer and Locke and Sayid and Hurley and…you get the point.

Anyway, I am looking for any West Seattle LOST parties? I know that they are out there. If not maybe a bunch of us could gather? Maybe? I have beer?

BTW, DID YOU WATCH TONIGHT?!?!?! WHAT THE HECK?!?

Thanks, Ken; I’m glad you added that point.

I also meant to point out that I don’t know about resolutions at the Republican caucus. The rules posted on the KC Republicans website do refer to a discussion of resolutions as one of the agenda items, so I assume one could bring a resolution forward there, too. I have put a start on a Republican version on the MorePerfect site, with the Democratic one, but it needs someone to add endorsements that would appeal more to Republicans.

I am considering kindergarten/elementary schools in the North Cluster (i.e. Alki, Cooper, Lafayette, and Schmitz Park) and am looking for parents that have had good experiences, bad experiences or any other comments about the above schools. Current parents or recent parents – let’s start a lively discussion. If you LOVE your kid’s school – sell me on it. If you hate it, why??

house..your assertion that McCain is liberal depends upon your definition of liberal i think:) Campaign finance reform following nearly getting your hand caught in the Keating cookie jar doesn’t exactly qualify one as a liberal.

and your assertion that democrats equal big government is also dependent upon definition. If you equate big government with big social programs, you might be right. But if you equate big government with huge tax relief and subsidies for private businesses you might be wrong.

the assertion that every new president equals change is also dependent upon definition. If your definition includes the words “in policy”, then a new president does not necessarily mean change.

As for why the alternate parties aren’t getting much attention this year… i think the last two elections are a good indicator of that. Alternates pulled enough “liberal” vote to lose an election for the democrats. Not a good idea this time:)

You do make some good points though and they sound like the basis for an interesting conversation.

I agree that all of the candidates sound as though they are speaking to second graders… and that is due to our sound bite driven press.

None of the candidates will quickly forget the press’s reaction to Kerry’s attempt at articulate answers in the last election. His front porch talks were actually quite thought provoking, but his press coverage was anything but.

America elected the candidate they would most like to have a beer with because that’s what the second graders led them to believe was important. A major award winning newspaper actually endorsed Bush for his second term because he was likable and they loved his campaign promises… in spite of acknowledging that he hadn’t fulfilled any of them in his first term. And this was on their editorial page. Amazing.

i think there are plenty of republicans as well as democrats who aren’t too happy with the directions our nation has taken. And i don’t think most of us believe that any of the presidential candidates now offered are the ideal solution. But you have to work with what you’ve got.

I just think it is time that American citizens became a larger part of the conversation than American business… and i hope it’s time for Americans to think for themselves and not just take the information offered by an increasingly sensationalized press as the final word.

Personally i don’t think your political affiliation is nearly as important as how you feel about issues that will affect all of us. When it comes to the real issues, rhetoric aside, most of us are more alike than different.

    I am a conservative… a true conservative… a conservative democrat. imagine that:)

Also note, one way to get to the county convention to advocate your proposal, is to get yourself elected as a delegate at the precinct level and again at the district.

    So get to work :)

Have you been to Many Moon’s Trading Company yet? It’s a wonderful thrift store in the hallway between the Junction liquor store and Capers on the alley side. 4517 Califonia Ave Suite B. 206-937-3481. It’s in an odd location so not everyone knows about it. They have a $2.00 room with great deals! I am not getting paid to write this, but I do work there because I love it soooo much, and think you will too. Please write on this if you have been there… we love you!

Jimmy, in my travels roundabouts and traffic circles are considered the same – if that’s not the case in Seattle, it’s news to me.

I’ve emailed SDOT to verify this rule about the left turns in traffic circles and will follow up here when I hear some definitive info. Unless you have some citation somewhere that I can look at that actually says that. I’m not accusing you of lying, but forgive me if I don’t base my traffic law compliance on a comment on a blog forum without some proof. :)

Just throwing some topics out there to chew on:

    1) Funny how everyone here plays into the two main political parties strategy of making people believe that you should only have two choices for President (Democrats and Republicans). There are other parties out there that haven’t received any press at all….Does Hillary really represent you and make you life better (no way in hell for me)? Does John McCain truly represent everything that you believe in (no way in hell for me)? Why can’t we get the other political parties (mainly Libertarian and Green) to gain momentum when people are so discouraged with the status quo?

    2) Why would you ever want to vote for a political party that is without doubt going to increase “BIG” government (yes, I’m picking on Democrats). Do you really feel that you and all other individuals cannot think for themselves? When I hear Clinton and Obama speak, it’s as if they are playing to a crowd of second graders. If I were a true Democrat (which I am not), I would be offended with the way that this party continually rants “I represent change”. There will be change regardless of who is in office….that goes without saying.

PS….If you’re truly liberal you should vote for McCain. He’s a better ally than Hillary or Obama. If you’re not up to speed on how he destroyed campaign reform, Google it.

Sue, you’re confusing a roundabout with a traffic circle, they are two completely different animals.

A traffic circle’s sole reason for being is to slow traffic, a roundabout’s purpose is to move cars more quickly than a 4-way stop with less guesswork for drivers.

Seattle DOT views an intersection with a traffic circle as an uncontrolled intersection and a “short” left may be made when it’s safe and practical to do so.

Hi, I’m your friendly webmaster (she, not he; my husband focuses primarily on business development) and I don’t have much of a clue what Ken is talking about either. We are content people, not technical people, or else this site would be brimming with a lot more widgets, geegaws, code, and technical razzledazzle than it does; this forum exists as an install of bbPress, and is here via the good graces of our pro-bono technical consultant Stuart Maxwell, melded to some degree with the database for the rest of the blog, which runs on WordPress, and I haven’t changed anything about how it works or doesn’t work. I do suggest you e-mail me personally if you have a question or concern and I will figure out how to investigate it; I know just enough to be dangerous but writing, reporting, editing, photographing, and processing the content for the main site takes so many hours per day, I don’t have a lot left over for technical tweakage. Kind of like my years in TV – I couldn’t fix a transmitter but by gosh, I could write copy and order crews around. editor@westseattleblog.com

Thank you for the invite, WSMom! We will definitely try to stop by. I was reading previous posts regarding Seattle residents not being friendly. I do have to say that people are more friendly in Seattle than they are in Phoenix, where we moved from. We’ve met most of our neighbors here and they are all very nice. Also, I am a flight attendant and I have found that our most friendly passengers are in the northwest! It’s probably because you do things like the “Anti-Freeze”! What a great idea. Thanks again!

Jimmy G and Flowerpetal, thanks for the input.

You are 100% right, it is important for the dogs to think of us as the leader of their pack.. and they do.

If you could be a fly on the wall in our home, you would wonder what i am fussing about. I have great well behaved dogs who look to us for everything. They even come when they are called which for this breed is amazing. They know all of their basic commands and most of the time, they obey them.

If only i wanted to stay home alone all of the time, they would be nearly perfect dogs.

However, we think it might be fun to go out into public with our dogs or to have people in. This is where things get a little problematic.

I am not so concerned about them having fun with other dogs as them getting to a point where it is not a hassle to walk them past another dog.

Right now, they both want to meet other dogs and cry piteously when they are restrained. One doesn’t know how (and is in class… i can’t recommend Jeff at Sound Animals enough) and the other sniffs fine but then tries to establish dominance too quickly.

And this is when they are being walked alone. When together, they make a terrible fuss and then attack one another.. like two kids fighting over who gets to say hi first.

Shibas are noisy when they act out. They make tremendous mean sounding noise with their lips curled back and hair raising which surprisingly enough scares off other dog owners before they can be corrected and have positive interaction.

I don’t blame the other owners one bit… these are ferocious sounding dogs… it just makes it difficult to expose them to other dogs and train them.

Right now i couldn’t take them to a dog park even if i wanted to… and i am not sure i do. However, they have successfully had other dogs visit in their backyard.

Resources are hard to find. Finding a trainer that would allow these dogs into a dog class was not easy.

Stella Ruffingtons has been incredible with grooming (my boy has to be muzzled to have his nails cut) but they certainly can’t stay there for daycare or overnight boarding.

I finally found a vet who understands the breed, but she is in DesMoine. I would love to find someone closer.

I found one kennel that would take them for boarding (in Monroe), but am concerned about their sanitation and won’t go back. right now they are going to the vet’s for boarding. not ideal.

I am exploring Shiba groups… there is a Seattle group that holds play dates once a month.. but they are mostly puppies.

i found a shiba rescue organization in Portland but again that’s pretty far.

And being newcomers, we don’t have friends who are dog friendly to drop by and ring the doorbell or sit over tea while the dog gets time out for misbehavior and learns that it is good behavior or banishment.

I hired a dog walker and now have someone coming in as a training partner and that helps, but it is slow progress.

I have always had rescue dogs, including an abused Akita… these two are simply the most challenging i have encountered… Yuki’s nickname when he first came to us was Cujo and it was well deserved. He’s not Cujo now, but his behavior is certainly aggressive enough at times to frighten even experienced dog handlers.

Don’t get me wrong, these are good dogs. They play together well. (They sometimes sound like they are going to kill one another when playing, but there is never blood drawn.) They eat within a foot of one another and don’t fight over food. They are leash trained. They are both affectionate with people they know.

They just need the kind of socialization they didn’t get in loving homes… and at two/three it is harder to find than when they are puppies.

We are doing our best to create an environment for them where they can learn those skills… and that will take other people and other dogs.

In the meantime, i am teaching them to like muzzles so they can be out in parts of the world where it is a little more crowded.

I agree that rescue dogs can be pretty trying, but they sure do steal into your heart.

Jimmy, I don’t see anything in the drivers handbook about being able to make a left turn through the circle without going all the way around. In fact, it looks as if they say you always have to go around the circle. http://dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/driverguide.pdf (page 33 of the guide). Is there another place that you know if that has more details about the (legal) ability to turn left without going around the circle?

JanS, Thank you for the welcome! We have been having so much fun exploring West Seattle! We’ve already found some places that are our “favorites”. I will definitely bring any other questions to this forum. Feel free to make any suggestions also. Keep in mind, we know nothing about Seattle and moved here on a last minute situation. I don’t know how we got so lucky to find a place and end up in West Seattle!

it has always been my understanding that at unmarked intersections not on an arterial (which has the right of way), if you arrive at an intersection at the same time as someone else, you yield to the car on the right, just as at a 4 way stop…..at least thats how I tend to do things. Not everyone pays attention to that, so do what seems the safest :)

New Resident….I second the motion on the West Seattle YMCA…good resources there. And I’d like to welcome you to West Seattle. I’m originally from the east coast, so a transplant also…and I’ve been here in West Seattle for 33 years now. It’s a wonderful place to live. From walking in Lincoln Park, to Alki, to our Alaska Junction shopping area, you’ll find things to do for yourself, and things to do with your daughter. And the people on here are a wealth of information…so ask away….:)

The first place I’d steer you is the West Seattle YMCA. Lots of programs for kids, families, and adults: swimming, sports, dance, etc. They also have occasional family socials–the next one is 3/21. It’s a great place to network with other families in the area.

I too was looking for part time work and considered doing something on the internet. I was thinking that would be great because I would be at home and be able to work in my own time. Unfortunately, my email is now bombarded with emails from these “work from home” scams. If anyone knows of any legitimate work from home businesses, please pass it along!

Personally, when I come to an unmarked intersection, I will yield until I’m sure I won’t get hit. I’ve seen too many people blow through those intersections without a second glance, and also plowing into the traffic circles without noticing you’re there already, so for my own safety I treat them like yields or stop signs always. I figure it doesn’t matter what you’re “supposed” to do if someone does something else and hits you.

We just moved to Seattle from Phoenix and we couldn’t be more happy. We love it here in West Seattle! I wanted to try and reach out to other parents, or just get suggestions, on finding new friends for my daughter. She doesn’t live in Seattle full time yet, that’s a work in progress, so she doesn’t attend school here. She usually comes to Seattle once a month for a long weekend, sometimes twice a month. It would be great to find some other kids in our neighborhood around her age. She is 8. I’ve never been on a blog before, so I’m not sure how this all works. But again, any suggestions would be great. Also, any suggestions on anything in the area that you would like to share with a new resident would be great! Thanks.

hey guys.. how about the good old fashioned test method.

you post it. if it doesn’t show up or gets deleted.. it didn’t work.

nothing personal… just a line crossed.

maybe if something is deleted, they send you a quick note explaining why. :) sometimes my humor is a bit to dry to always read as humor…

As someone who has tried to moderate before, posting “policies and rules” only encouraged people to find ways to get around them.. it didn’t add clarity.

but maybe this webmaster is far more prescient than i and can navigate the shoals of “regs” more easily… whatever… i am just a passenger on this one.
