JKB, do you refer to Robert’s Rules when having informal conversations with friends? Your insistence that there be no editorializing or criticism of your rhetoric is unrealistic and your responses to such are condescending.

Before you insist that I provide you with “proof” read the last 5 pages.

By the way…I threw some spleen in there for you. It’s sort of squishy. Get it quick our it’ll smell bad.

California’s cap is very different than Washington’s cap. California capped assessed values. Washington capped total taxes collected. In California you can have two identical homes worth the same amount of money. One person bought decades ago and pays tax of $2,000. The other bought last year and pays tax of $8,000. Even though both homes are worth the same amount and receive similar services. Washington’s approach is conceptually very different. Everyone is assessed at (presumably) fair market value. Then the tax rate is just backed into based on the total county-wide tax amount from the previous year plus a small inflation amount and plus any new construction.

Liberal craziness on display once again.

No, Mrs, Brayden renters DO NOT pay property taxes. ONLY property owners pay property taxes or it would not be called a.. say it with me… ” Property Tax ! Jesus !

Only a Liberal such as Mrs. Braydon can twist reality to fit her situation and not even blink. Facts, Logic and not even titles on the taxes get in the way.

The ever lovely Mrs. Brayden just assumes that the evil capitalist land owner ( ie. The Landlord ) raises her rent to reflect the increase in their property taxes and much of the time that is true. But, what she is leaving out is that she will be the first person aboard the ” regulating the rent train ” that is now catching steam around Seattle to prevent this and her reasoning will be because of the ” Greed ‘ of the Landlords we needs this to be done.

In Liberal land reality sucks therefore they have learned the trick to just invent your own state of reality which enables them to ignore such things a Facts and Logic and certainly Math. The Democrats are suddenly the party of ” Science ” when it comes Global warming but obviously Math doesn’t have anything to do with Science..? OMG !

Yes, This altered state of consciousness that I refer to as ” Liberal land ” allows Liberals like Mrs. Brayden to tell you such hallucinogenic tales like the Government run Programs , agencies or pretty much Anything they do is a ” Good return for your dollar ” . i have to admit … after i stopped laughing and found my chair I gave gave her some props. WoW ! Even Harry Reid would laugh on that one.

Yes, it is true ( St3 ) at ( $ 1 Thousand Million Dollars ) -per- mile to move no more than 10% of traffic is a Great Deal in Liberal-ville. So will the Heroin ” Adventureland Amusement park ” downtown and please don’t forget the ( 2 ) Lane non expandable tunnel that replaced the ( 3 ) Lane Viaduct that was built before traffic even started will be a stunning return on investment. Oh.. Don’t forget the Toll that will end when my Great grand children’s Children retire.

The only problem with Mrs. Brayden and the other Liberals is that they live in Seattle and not ” Liberal Land ” and here in Seattle we don’t have money trees that bear Gumdrops filled with gold. We have real taxes that are going up by the second with no consideration of the consequences these wasteful fantasies are having on the people paying the bills.

The sad thing is that Liberals only understand what reality is all about when the sign on the way into Liberal-ville says. ” Welcome to Venzuela ” or ” Thank you for visiting Greece. Please leave your wallet at the door “.

Redblack I don’t disagree with most of your post. In 2016 the property tax rate in Seattle was only .87%. That’s less than 1%. Really low! The reason it is so low is because assessed values have increased a lot but there is a legislative cap on property tax increase. So the rate is actually *falling* because the base is capped and assessed values are rising.
Voter approved levies are not part of the cap, though. So the portion of tax from levies has increased substantially.
For 2016, the owner of a home in Seattle pays a property tax rate of .87% So a $670,000 house will have property taxes of $5,826.44 for the year. Of that amount $3,338.55 is from the standard state/local/city factor and the remaining $2,487.89 is from voter approved levies.
The OP is concerned with the voter approved levies. For a guy or gal making big bucks, $2,487.89 is chump change. For a person just barely squeaking by in a house they bought some time ago for WAY less than $670,000 that $2,487.89 might be more meaningful. In my opinion it is not an inconsequential number.
As my post earlier explained, we are a just and generous city. We are willing to pay more to support the things important to us – parks, libraries, schools, affordable housing, etc. But some cannot afford it. So they will have to live elsewhere or cut back in other areas of their spending.

To update, I still haven’t found Lily, so I tried Bishop’s Barbershop across from Jefferson Square. Very happy! I saw Mizzy & she was awesome with my color & cut, both were superior. Yes, they’re more expensive than Budget Cuts, but I’m very happy with the results.

In line with a comment on a different thread about property taxes, moving to rural locations is one way to get away from the unpleasant aspects of metropolitan living. Otherwise, staying engaged with neighborhood interest groups and delivering constant feedback to city committees and elected officials are the most effective ways of influencing quality of life issues.

    oh, and by the way…

so your property taxes might approach 2% of assessed value.

what’s the interest rate on your home loan? and what value do you get for that 4% interest rate that you pay to some zaibatsu bank?

does BofA give you free foot rubs? remodeled fire stations? better school facilities? improved electric service?

or just a bunch of corporate customer service grief, while they dodge federal taxes with your money?

Uber. My husband and I have used Uber for a few 6:00 am flights (so roughly a 3:45 pickup to play it safe with TSA) and it’s worked every time. You can even schedule a pick up the night before which is more reassuring. Before we realized that was an option, I woke up super early to start checking the app for cars in the area. We’ve also taken Uber home, easy to find at the airport. You can reserve a car a few minutes in advance instead of waiting in line too.

    JKB..

    thanks for making my point..
once again you avoid the actual issue.

when you have to rely on semantics … denigrating other posters… strictly defined definitions of terms and issues defined only on terms you set to make your point..

you might as well give it up..

I am not at all sorry that advocates for a cause i identify with are making their case in a manner you find offensive…

it is getting press and without press there is no chance for making any case.

I do have to point out however… that when you label the black lives matter as a cause I identify with .. as though there is no basis to that cause.. it says a lot more about why you are offended than i think you wanted to reveal.

this really isn’t about patriotism and the flag at all…
and frankly. that’s not even a clever smoke screen.

which brings us back to the point of the sarcastic comment i made referencing your argument… about “uppity _____ ”

you know.. the comment you chose to misinterpret…

just as you state you didn’t infer that my comment was snarky because you didn’t use the word snarky … or that your argument isn’t based on the protest being socially unacceptable because you didn’t use that phrase either…

It’s really too bad because this could have been such a good conversation.

JoB, this is tiresome. Try sticking with the issues. Otherwise I’m left noting that I never used the “socially acceptable” phrase. You did. Nor did I say ‘snarky’. If we’re going to throw words back and forth, you’re the one who used “uppity n—-“.

I don’t know just what you mean by “I am sorry that…”, but I did not ask for an apology or for sympathy. Perhaps you should be sorry that advocates for a cause you identify with are making their case in an offensive manner?

the parking issue could be solved with park and ride lots and a bus/trolley that runs the length of california.. increasing accessibility..

as for those monstrosity houses.. the house next to me was torn down and like everyone else i was dreading the big box that went in next door. It doesn’t block as much sun as i thought it would .. it eliminated the overgrown raspberry patch that kept intruding into my yard.. i got new fencing out of it and i got great neighbors.

i have to say.. it didn’t turn out nearly as badly as i had thought it would

I am having a bit of a driver’s ed flashback, but recently had knee surgery. My doctor recommended having a friend take me (and my car) to an empty parking lot to practice moving my gimpy knee from the gas to the brake pedal before I do any “real” driving.

Any places you’d recommend taking my new knee out for a test drive?

What I understand JKB to be saying is that using the national anthem as a vehicle for protest offends his patriotic sensibilities; that’s clearly the case with many other people as well. Fine, they’re entitled to their opinion just as the protesters are entitled to make their statement.

It’s undeniable that the protests have been effective insofar as they have generated a much neglected and much needed discussion about racial injustice. So any debate about the effectiveness of the protesters’ strategy is sort of pointless other than to say something like “I wish they would have done something different.” Does that indicate an unwillingness to engage in a discussion about the issue of racial injustice or submit that conventional patriotic displays trumps the insistence on acknowledging a profound failure on the part of the entire nation?

I think this is incredibly important, and it’s frustrating to me that ruffled feathers, actual and perhaps imagined, can derail the discussion.

The O.P. is making a valid point though. In just the past couple years we have had ballot measures with increased property taxes for (1) parks district (2) schools/education levy (3) transportation “move seattle” (4) libraries and (5) affordable housing. I suspect I’m forgetting one or two. Each of these measures passed with a healthy margin. Folks this is a lot of new taxes. Each time we vote for another tax increase we are pricing some people out of the city. Am I saying roads aren’t important? Schools aren’t important? Affordable housing isn’t important? No. All those things are important. But we have to collectively acknowledge that we are willing to price people out of Seattle because we think the benefits of these additional tax revenues are worthwhile. All these taxes are great if you can afford to live here. But if the taxes price you out it’s pretty lousy.

Well it has been 5 days since I posted my blog. I use my real name for these kind of things as it is proper. If you are afraid to use your real name you should not be commenting as you are hiding behind anonymity and can say any wreak less thing you want.
Do you think for a moment that property taxes will be reduced equal to the result of an income tax?
How do people on fixed incomes afford 15% increases in 2016 property taxes and expected 20% increase in 2017?
Pier 1 imports left West Seattle due to the $15.00 per hour wage. Does that increase employment?
Does the $15.00 increase mean more funds per individual? Or more individuals who have had their hours cut back and are now on assistance?
Does painting rainbow crosswalks in downtown Seattle cost nothing? Do gay parades cost the city nothing? Does re identifying toilets or providing additional special toilets cost nothing?
What do I suggest. Fiscal responsibility. The City of Seattle is way out of control with the social programs. The State is fined daily for not properly funding schools. Our National debt will crush us eventually. We need to concentrate on good roads to aid commerce, good schools to educate our children, and good health care for all of us from a competitive service delivery. We need to enforce the laws and support our police.
The rest of it is nonsense.
Yes, we are continuing our search for a new residence outside of Seattle.
    See Ya
