My rule of thumb is to always stop for pedestrians on two lane roads but not 4 lane roads. I’ve tried that a few times to bad effect: there’s always some driver that’ll come flying by in the other lane and nearly cream the pedestrian. I don’t want to be the one who helpfully gets someone killed. In 4 lane roads it is better for the peds to wait for no traffic.
