Trails Through Time: Contamination and Restoration in the West Duwamish Greenbelt is an interactive Story Map that traces the intertwined natural, cultural, and industrial history of Seattle’s largest contiguous forest. From Coast Salish stewardship to 20th-century gravel pits, brickyards, and cement kiln dust disposal, the Greenbelt’s story reflects both resilience and the lasting impacts of industrialization. This presentation, an extension of the Seattle’s Forest: The West Duwamish Greenbelt exhibit at the Southwest Seattle Historical Society’s Log House Museum, was developed in partnership with Southwest Seattle Historical Society and West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails. It not only brings to life historic maps, photographs, and environmental data, but also serves as a resource for community members interested in land use, environmental history, and ways to get more involved in stewardship, advocacy, and restoration efforts in the Greenbelt.Lisa Meoli is a Senior Environmental Historian at Floyd|Snider with over 20 years of consulting experience in historical research and environmental site investigation. She specializes in uncovering the industrial and land-use histories of contaminated sites, blending archival research with technical environmental data to inform cleanup, restoration, and regulatory decision-making.
