South Seattle Community College (WSB sponsor) will host a performance and reading by internationally acclaimed Samoan poet, Sia Figiel on campus April 30th, 12:00–1:00 pm in RSB 30.

Figiel is a contemporary award-winning Samoan novelist, poet and painter. Her first book, Where We Once Belonged, won the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize for Best First Book in 1997. Figiel’s poetry and stories have been awarded at the Polynesian Literacy Competition in 1994. Her books have been translated into several languages including French, Spanish, German, and Dutch.

Figiel was recognized as the first Samoan novelist in New Zealand and is the first Pacific Islander to read at the Shakespeare Globe Theater in London.

The performance by Figiel is part of Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month and is presented by South Seattle Community College’s AANAPISI Center, Pacific Islander Club, Student Leadership and Academic Programs.
