After our recent reminder about tomorrow’s Recycle Roundup at Fauntleroy Church – a popular twice-yearly dropoff event – sharp-eyed commenter PSPS noticed something new on the list of what will and will not be accepted: TVs. Judy Pickens confirmed that and shares this reminder:
You may have noticed (or more likely missed) that this Sunday’s Recycle Roundup at Fauntleroy Church will not be accepting televisions (CRT, LCD, or plasma). You can, however, bring computer monitors.
As a collector for the E-Cycle Washington program for environmentally responsible recycling, 1 Green Planet gets paid by manufacturers for TVs dropped off at its warehouse, not for community events such as the semi-annual roundup. The closest E-Cycler where you can drop off your derelict TV is Burien Goodwill (1031 SW 128th).
The Recycle Roundup is in the church parking lot, 9 am-3 pm tomorrow, 9140 California SW (map).
SATURDAY, 1:20 AM: Happening now in east Fauntleroy, information via scanner: Police are searching for one or more people who broke into Super Deli Mart at 35th/Barton a short time ago. Someone called 911 to say they thought they saw intruders stealing merchandise; police arrived moments later and reported a smashed window, with a cash register believed to be missing as well. Possible suspect description: White male, 30s, blue jacket, blue jeans.
SUNDAY, 11:39 AM: We asked SPD media relations if there had indeed been an arrest. And yes, there was – they’ve just posted a short note on SPD Blotter; the K-9 team found the 23-year-old suspect in the 9200 block of 35th SW.
11:33 AM: A rescue offshore in Fauntleroy has delayed ferries to and from the terminal. Heidi, onboard one of the ferries, says “a sailboat went turtle” and tweeted photos including:

Scanner traffic indicates a person has been rescued from the water.
11:43 AM: The Seattle Fire crews have just left the dock. The Klahowya, which was assisting, finally has made it to Fauntleroy. No information so far on the rescued person’s condition.

Still no official word on how the victim is doing and exactly what happened.
After cutting trees as part of a soil cleanup at two of West Seattle’s six “surplus” ex-substations, over the objections of community advocates including the WS Green Space Coalition, City Light said it would try a different technique at the Fauntleroy and Genesee Hill sites – “vactoring” contaminated soil in a way that WSGSC was told should make cleanup possible without destroying the trees. Thanks to a reader tip, we learned this work is happening at the Fauntleroy site (just around the corner from the Endolyne business district-let) right now. Meantime, as noted in our most recent report, the Green Space Coalition is continuing to advocate for a larger community role in determining the sites’ future – rather than what has been the usual past path of seeing them sold for housing development. City Light has said it could send disposition-plan legislation to the City Council – which has the final say – as soon as the third quarter of this year.
9:51 PM: Seattle Fire has a fire response in the 4500 block of SW Director Place (map). The building is described in county records as a four-plex.

That’s an aerial view of the Barton Pump Station upgrade project north of the Fauntleroy ferry dock, photographed this week by Long B. Nguyen. It’s a project of the King County Wastewater Treatment District, and they’re one of dozens of participants slated for the big annual membership meeting of the Fauntleroy Community Association this coming Tuesday (March 18th).
The meeting at The Hall at Fauntleroy is part info fair; at last Tuesday’s FCA board meeting, we were told confirmed participants include, besides KCWTD, Washington State Ferries, the Fauntleroy Schoolhouse Community Center, Fauntleroy Church, “Diver Laura” James with Tox-Ick.org, The Whale Trail, Seal Sitters, The Kenney (WSB sponsor), ArtsWest, the Fauntleroy Y (WSB sponsor), Morgan Community Association, and the Southwest Branch Library.
It’s also a chance for Fauntleroy residents to pay their annual FCA membership dues and vote for the board; and local bites are offered as an incentive – including The Hall’s own Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering, nearby Endolyne Joe’s (WSB sponsor), Bird on a Wire Espresso, The Original Bakery, and Stuffed Cakes. It all starts at 6 pm; The Hall is on the south side of the historic schoolhouse at 9131 California SW.

5:07 AM: Seattle Fire units are responding to the 9400 block of 45th SW (map) right now to check out a house-fire report. More to come.
5:15 AM: Crews on scene describe the fire as in a garage, according to emergency-radio communications. People in the area tell us flames are visible from a distance. Our crew is arriving.
5:27 AM: Crews report the fire is under control and that they have moved to a defensive firefighting mode.
5:33 AM: Just added video shared by neighbors, showing the fire at its height. Our crew at the scene has talked with the residents, who say they got out OK after somebody knocked on the door to wake them up and tell them about the fire in their garage, which is behind their house.
No injuries are reported.
5:55 AM: While the flames are out, the garage is still smoldering, and it’s too soon for fire crews to know what started the fire, and what damage was done to the vehicles in the garage. We’re told it’s part of an older structure that was on the site – the house in front is newer.
Traffic note: Metro says the fire response is rerouting RapidRide buses off SW Wildwood. Here are reroute details.
6:54 AM: Streets are reopening, so the buses should return to regular routing soon (confirmed by Metro, 7:06 am).
9:33 AM: We went back to the scene, where SFD spokesperson Kyle Moore told us the cause for now remains “undetermined.”

The third annual Fauntleroy Chili Cook-Off needs one more chef to fill out the list of competitors – meat or vegetarian, your choice. If you have been to Endolyne Joe’s (WSB sponsor) in Fauntleroy recently, you might have noticed that flyer. In case you haven’t – the restaurant is asking us now to get the word out more widely. As explained by Rich:
Within the last month, someone decided it a good idea to take one of our decorations. It was a two-foot-tall wooden pig named “Danny.” We are not interested in prosecuting the offender. We are not interested in getting anyone in trouble. We just want our pig back. It has been a part of this restaurant since we opened. Kids have measured their growth by standing next to the pig. … We are offering a case of bacon to the person that gets our pig back…NO QUESTIONS ASKED!

Residential streets in Arbor Heights and Fauntleroy will get a bit of a facelift this summer – with a process called microsurfacing that SDOT is using instead of chip seal. The map above shows the general project area, but that does NOT mean every block of every street will get this treatment. But some preparation work is starting now:
To prepare the streets for microsurfacing, SDOT crews will make minor repairs such as filling potholes, depressions and cracks. Locations identified as candidates for such repairs may be marked with white paint.
Trees and vegetation will be trimmed as necessary to allow the microsurfacing crews to complete their work.
The project area is divided into five sections. The northeast section will be prepared first, and SDOT will prepare each section before moving onto the next.
The prep work will begin as early as January as weather permits and may continue into the summer. This work is expected to occur intermittently as SDOT deploys crews for this project and for other maintenance projects throughout the city.

While attending the 7:00 X-Mas Eve Service at Fauntleroy Church last night my Mother in Law lost her purse. We were not able to find it in several attempts last night so this morning we went back and after searching we found the purse but all of the contents had been stolen including cash, driver’s license and credit cards.
We believe that one scenario is that the purse was dropped in the driveway while she was getting into the car at my Mother’s house at the corner of Brace Point and Wildwood. The purse nowhere to be found last night when we returned 30 minutes later last night but found it this morning just to the north in the brush in the area directly across Brace Point from the church. My Mother in Law is traveling from out of town and will need to catch a flight back so the missing ID at this point is more important than the cash, credit cards etc. My guess is that at some point the person that found it took what they wanted out of the wallet that was inside and then threw away the wallet. I was hoping that someone may find it so we can at least get the ID back. The driver’s license is from Virginia and my Mother in Laws name is Jane. We can certainly find some ways to get around the airport security issues when not having ID but the easiest solution would be to get the license back so we would be very grateful if someone was to find it and return it.
Fauntleroy is one of the Washington State Ferries terminals included in a new feature WSF is testing, showing how many spaces remain in vehicle-holding areas on docks, in hopes that will help people gauge wait time before they arrive. It’s been added to the Vessel Watch page for each terminal, pages where you also will find multiple cameras. Here’s the main page; here’s the Fauntleroy page; here’s the Southworth page. (The Vashon page doesn’t have parking-space information since vehicle fares are not collected there.) WSF emphasizes it’s testing this feature; look for the “Feedback” link on those pages to let them know what you think.
If you’re not having Thanksgiving with family and/or friends, you still don’t have to be alone. Just dropped by night one of the Fauntleroy Fine Art and Holiday Gift Show – 16 local artists, photographers, crafters, and other artisans (here’s the list) showing and selling their work, until 8 pm tonight, then again tomorrow and Sunday. Dee Miller‘s metal garden art, above, is marked $50, perfect for the 12th Man (or Woman, or Kid, or …) in your life. It’s a mellow, festive mood in the Fauntleroy Church Fellowship Hall (9140 California SW), with live piano music (Bronwyn Edwards was playing while we were there), holiday decorations, and more.

“One of those years” is how Fauntleroy Creek/Watershed steward Judy Pickens put it as she shared this report, after volunteers spent two weeks watching for fish that just didn’t show up:
After two weeks of ideal habitat conditions – 12-foot tides, rain to flush the creek, no obstructions – salmon watchers have gone home after spotting just one coho spawner. That fish had just nosed into the creek as the tide ebb, leaving it there to the mercy of two very active river otters.
This is not the only year we’ve had so few fish. Last year’s 274 was an exciting aberration. Other recent counts: 14 (2011), 0 (2010), 18 (2009), 2 (2008), 89 (2007), 0 (2006).
Early reports of lots of coho in the Sound didn’t hold true here. We always have tribal fishing, sometimes right in the cove, and noise from construction on land near the ferry terminal likely wouldn’t have affected spawners in the water.
Next year should be great!
One of West Seattle’s longest-running Thanksgiving traditions is happening again this year – and the official announcement is just in from Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes:
Just wanted to get the word out about our Free Community Thanksgiving Community Meal at The Hall at Fauntleroy this Thanksgiving Day on Thursday November 28th from 12 noon until 3 PM.
All are welcome for a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings prepared by Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering Executive Chef Michael Chase. This is the 15th year that Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes owners Meg and David Haggerty and David Meckstroth have hosted this wonderful dinner. They are joined by a wonderful group of volunteers who help greet our welcome guests and serve dinner.
We will gladly accept donations for desserts. This year we are also asking for donations of gently used/clean or new warm clothing such as coats, jackets, scarves, gloves and hats. We are also asking for blankets or throw blankets to be given to our guests in need of them. Desserts and items can be dropped off at the Hall at Fauntleroy on Thanksgiving Day after 10 AM.
We are located at 9131 California Ave SW in the Fauntleroy Community School House across the street from the Fauntleroy YMCA.

Early this morning, Mary messaged us from Fauntleroy about some emergency utility work, with water running down Barton near 38th (map). This morning, Bob Powers shares photos of an apparent sinkhole spotted in its aftermath, and writes:
We noticed this morning that a sink hole is developing in the grassy area in front of the water tower at 38th Ave SW and SW Barton Street. Seattle Public Utilities were working on a broken water line situation very early this morning (about 1:00 a.m.) a few yards east of the sink hole. SPU was notified of the sink hole at 7:45 a.m. this morning and said they would send someone right out. The sink hole is about six feet in diameter and about five feet deep.
I don’ know if this will develop any further but I thought it might be good to alert the neighborhood.
We’ll go over to check later this morning.

The judging of decorated cakes and the cake walk that follows have become a popular attraction at the Fauntleroy Fall Festival, this year on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2-5:30 pm. The more cakes, the merrier! Cakes (or a cluster of cupcakes) can be any size or flavor, and the fall-related design is up to you. Entries may be in the beginner, middling, or advanced category. Bring your cake on a disposable plate/tray to The Hall at Fauntleroy between noon and 1:30 on festival day. All festival-goers will get a chance to vote on the best and then win one in the cake walk.
