Update: Permits issued for “townhomes long after teardowns”

mtlot2.jpg

Five months after our last update on that empty lot along California just north of Morgan Junction (previous WSB coverage here), Knoll Development has just been issued construction permits for the four addresses at the site where townhomes and live-to-work units are to be built: at 6021, at 6025, at 6029, and at 6031. Looks like this is the Knoll website page about the development (this is just up the block from the live/work units that will be part of the 6053 California development).

Looking at the website, their work doesn’t look so bad, really. I’d live in one of those.

Hello. My name is David and I live in West Condo er I mean West Seattle… Belltown West if you will.

I think this is the only time I’ll say that I don’t oppose this development since the home that had been at this location was an eyesore, to say the least. It creeped me out to run by there and the vacant lot has been rather unsightly.

Live/work lofts are one of the best kinds of new development a neighborhood can ask for. In general, they aren’t too dense (because the units need to be a bit larger to allow live & work), they are usually aesthetically attractive (since they often attract creative people), and they allow people to run business from their homes (reducing traffic and fuel consumption). They are a very good fit for the Morgan Junction neighborhood.

These look similar to the ones featured in Pacific Mag. on Sunday in Columbia City. Much preferred to the other stuff going up.

Bah. Smeh. Yawn. Sure, they look fine, but there’s no retail of any kind in that project, is there? That lot would have been a great spot for a… oh, I wont’ even say it.

Does anyone know why the retail space in the apartment building across the street and north a ways from this project has sat empty for the past, oh, four years or so?

Yes, JW — I do know as my husband and I looked to inquire about leasing the space, 7-8 years ago. Apparently the owner wants just ONE tenant in the space, does not want to break it up into smaller spaces. I believe it’s 6,000 square feet if I remember correctly…… much too big for most leasor’s.

Thanks for the info! I’ve always been rather curious why it just sits there empty.

That space has actually NEVER been rented out since the building was built in 1992!

    .

I was always curious, too, as for the reason. I just figured it was a good tax write-off for the owner.

    .

According to Parcel Viewer, it actually was sold last year by the original purchaser from 1993.
