One less fish ‘n’ chips choice, for a while

Rhonda @ Beach Drive Blog notes Sunfish has posted a sign that it will be closed till October 11th. Just down the block, incidentally, the proposed restaurant/residence building at 2810 Alki Ave gets an early look tonight from the Southwest Design Review Board (meeting 6:30 pm @ the Southwest Precinct).

Hopefully the Sunfish crew are taking a long vacation – they appear to need one. Every time I’ve been there it’s been like dealing with the Soup Nazis of seafood. On my last visit the guy ringing me up never even made eye contact.

Keith: Happened to us too. Went there after rave reviews. The guy up front was grouchy as hell and both orders were wrong. Haven’t been back since…

I love the grumpy Greek place. They don’t pretend to be your best friend, and they never pull the upsale crap on you.

They’re going back to Greece to visit their mom. I’ve known them and eaten with them for 20 years, since they were on Fauntleroy.

Give ’em another chance. They’re great guys.

+1 for being a fan of the grumpy guys. I don’t need anymore friends (or false friendliness), especially when I’m trying to pick up my order and get home to have some delicious FnC and chowder.

If you don’t like em, ADIOS.

Shorter line for the rest of us that do.
    Best F&C in town.
Be looking forward to their return.

We went recently after hearing all the rave reviews and had the worst scallops ever. They were soggy and chewy…..did we just hit it on an off night? We vowed not to go back after that experience.

Sunfish’s fries are not always the best but the fish, of any type, is excellent. And yes the brothers are a bit Soup Nazi-ish.
Alki Fish n Crab is pretty spendy for what you get to eat but the view and the woman who runs it are nice.

    I love the halibut kabobs!

I also agree that Alki Fish & Crab has the best fish & chips in WS followed by Elloitt Bay Brew Pub.
I used to be put off by counter service at Sunfish. They don’t care, and now neither do I.

Used to be a Spuds family, but they fell along the wayside. Sunfish has better fish, and the service is actually kind of refreshing :p

Wow, huh. See, I have had nothing but fine experiences over the years at Sunfish & wonderful food. Marvelous halibut kabobs, fabulously sweet and crunchy shrimp and delectable fish. And they gave my very polite 5 year old respect when he ordered. They’ve got me as a fan.

Alki F&C, on the other hand, sold up crunchy, but woefully underseasoned fish last time I was there & the green salad I got was super expensive and swimming in several tablespoons of dressing. She laughed at me when I showed her. Some of you may say that I shouldn’t order salad at a f&c place, but if they put “mixed greens” on the menu and charge a handful for ’em…..

Sunfish is great, always great tasting fish. Best line at fast food restaurant goes to Alki F&C. Ordered the F&C and 30 minutes later went up to ask what happened. Was told that “F&C aren’t fast food.” And here I thought they just dropped the fish in the boiling oil to cook. Haven’t been back since.

At one time, Cicra had the best F&C in town – like when they first opened. They used to have this incredible homemade tartar sauce that went perfectly with the lightly breaded, perfectly seasoned fish. But the tartar sauce changed a number of years ago and the last time I tried their F&C offering, I received a bland, overcooked, greasy mess. *sigh*

But for fast food F&C, Sunfish has always been tops in my book. It pains me when they close for a month every winter (though I understand). And now it looks like we’ll have to endure two month-long closures this year. *sigh*

Don’t like the food or service, great. One less in line when its time for us to eat.
The brothers are great, I would much prefer a clean restroom and good food than having someone act like they are happy I’m there.

I do love Sunfish as the best fish & chips place in Seattle. I always get the kalamari. However, the comments about their friendliness (“Soup Nazi”) has some merit. It only took me going there for 10 years before they have started to warm up to me!

Sorry, comment time is over.
