WS mom needs your advice

A WSB reader who’s just days away from welcoming a baby, and already has a toddler, isn’t going to be cooking much this summer and wonders what we all suggest for great WS takeout food. Including, but not limited to, a “great burrito.” So, what are your favorites for takeout on our side of the bay?

Amante Pizza & Pasta is “Da Bomb” for Italian food take-out/delivery. Their Tortellini Especial is just plain “to die for”, but so are their Italian Wings, Siciliano Pizza, and Spinach Salad. Also way up on the list is their Putanesca.

After giving birth last year, I picked up many entrees from Tacos Guaymas over on the corner of Roxbury & 17th as well as the Salvadorean Bakery nearby. Well worth the drive.

One of the healthiest speediest things you can do is get one of the pre-baked chickens from any of the grocery stores — PCC, Met Market, Safeway, QFC. All depends on what part of town you live in. Bag of lettuce, dressing, and some crusty bread and you’re done. If the kids don’t eat those accompaniments you can get them some carrot sticks and ranch dip, that sort of thing.

Has anyone tried Lucky Palette? Seems like a great way to get healthy meals delivered to your doorstep, although I haven’t tried it out myself.

Buddha Ruksa is the best Thai around, and great for takeout. Also, there is a Tacos Guaymas on Cali.

Organic delivery folks at Delicious Planet do it up right. Once or twice weekly straight to your doorstep. A great way to supplement a busy households weekly nutritional and gastronomic desires. http://www.delicious-planet.com/

Not take out in the traditional sense, but the Morgan Thriftway has a great selection of right sized (single or small portions) seasoned/ready to cook entree meals – Chicken Parmesan, Kalbi marinade beef or chicken, stuffed pork chops, stuffed peppers. Throw-em in the oven, and 30-40 minutes later you look like you slaved all day!

Other favorite take out: Nikko Teriaki – jefferson square, get the spicy chicken! Huge portion (enough for two) chicken, rice and salad. Pai Lin Thai across from Admiral Blockbuster – terrible parking, but great food!

There’s also a Tacos Guaymas in the Alaska Junction on Calif. Ave. You also might consider Metropolitan Market’s fresh pasta dishes while you wait. They’re great, and the large size is more than enough for you and hubby. Throw in a premade salad, some french bread…yum. Then there’s the myriad of Asian take out places near the Junction. Try Lee’s Asian…great food….

  • Bill B June 29, 2007 (1:12 pm)

Lee’s (in the Junction) 7-flavor beef! Guilty pleasure….

If you’re in the mood for Greek takeout, Kokoras is a good bet (on California just north of the Morgan Junction). And…most restaurants in West Seattle will prepare food to go if you call ahead & ask.

We call up and order from the Royal India Grill quite a bit. They are just north of Admiral, across from the movie theater. Awesome, awesome Indian food, both veg and non-veg. My favorite is the veggie korma. I could eat it until I explode. Their whole menu is online at royalindiagrill.com.

For delivery we like Amante – great pizza, chicken wings, and pasta. Ho Win is a good Chinese place that delivers too. But, if you can pick up, we’ll have to agree that Kokoros has the best gyros around. We also take out from Kamei Japanese – they have wonderful teriyaki (not your run of the mill stuff) that is served with a yummy salad and miso soup – pretty inexpensive too.

Can you tell I’m not much of a cook? hehehe

  • Julie June 29, 2007 (1:56 pm)

I totally agree with the comments on Guaymas, Kokoras and Lee’s Asian. I would also suggest Buddha Rhuska for great Thai food. Their crispy basil chicken is yummy!

  • SomeGuy June 29, 2007 (2:01 pm)

We really like Lee’s Asian – try the Seven Flavor Beef, Chicken Lo Mein, or Chicken Kan Gai. Reasonably priced and delicious!

  • westwood June 29, 2007 (2:07 pm)

All great suggestions. We like Vatsana’s for Thai at Westwood, my kids love Pho from Than Bros., New Teriyaki at Morgan and Cali is good as well, and Guaymas always rocks.

  • d June 29, 2007 (2:17 pm)

Of all of them, Lee’s is my vote. The Honey Walnut Prawns, are the best. Seven Beef is also wonderful.

  • TD June 29, 2007 (2:22 pm)

    A few other faves:
Abbondonza next to Starbucks at Morgan Street (great pizza)
Elliott Bay Brewery in Junction (best place with kids)
Azuma (family friendly and cheap sushi)
Buddha Ruska (best thai take out)
Spiros (cheap and fun with kids)
Tutta Bella in Columbia City (pizza again)

You must have lunch at Blue Willow catering on Alaska across from WaMu. She does takeout or you can eat in. The food is very fresh, homemade soups, lovely salads, delicious sandwiches and wonderful french style quiche. The prices are very inexpensive. Good lowcost very healthy food to a keep a new mom going!! This is my new FAVORITE lunchtime retreat!!

  • MB June 29, 2007 (2:31 pm)

Pailin Thai is great and fast for carryout. Some of the best pad see ewe (sorry about the spelling
    in town!

  • Keith June 29, 2007 (2:59 pm)

I take it she lives outside the newly-expanded Pagliacci delivery area. ;)

Lee’s is amazing for quality, variety and price. I get food from there about once a week. Buddha Ruska is also great. I know people who drive here from “their side” of the bay just for those two places.

  • Jess June 29, 2007 (3:10 pm)

Don’t forget to check King County Food Protection Program, online inspection reports. I have stopped going to some of the above places after reading what they find in the kitchen. You can look up restaurants by name, street, or zip code.

  • Todd in Westwood June 29, 2007 (4:58 pm)

    1. Than Brothers Pho
    2. Vatsanas
    3. Toshi’s Terriaki
    4. Tacos Guaymas (have not tried Sal. Bakery yet)
    5. I dont know if they have takeout, but Elliot Bay Brewery has the best hamburgers.

Lee’s Nine Flavor Beef is the best. Why stop at 7 flavors when you can get 9?

  • SamanthaBrite June 29, 2007 (5:22 pm)

Another idea is to take advantage of the businesses that have popped up in so many places throughout Seattle that prepare meals you select, pick up, & freeze until you’re ready to eat them. Most can be prepared within 30 minutes.

I know WS has a few, but I’ve had great success with http://www.designeddinners.com/

They seem to have the best quality of those I’ve tested, though I’ve not tested any from WS.

  • Aral June 29, 2007 (5:29 pm)

“Great burrito”? In Seattle? Not possible, unfortunately.

  • Deanie June 29, 2007 (8:26 pm)

I second and third Lee’s Asian. Love, love, love the Honey Walnut prawns too. Everything is very fresh and very good. Nothing has disappointed. And, you can have brown rice if you prefer it.

El Salvador bakery. Fresh chicken soup is super hearty and SOOO good. The servings are BIG. Lots of inexpensive, kid-friendly stuff. (Pupusas, tamales, etc.) Also, cookies and pastries like you wouldn’t believe. Their flan has been tested and travels well.

Junction Guaymas has inexpensive salmon tacos. Kid and adult friendly.

Toshi’s has broccoli and baked tofu. It’s cheap, good and guilt-free.

And, don’t forget Husky Deli’s hand-packed pints of ice cream. Gotta’ have summer dessert. Yummalicious.

    Enjoy and congratulations!

I don’t cook so I visit the PCC deli frequently–they’ve got your entrees, side dishes, pastries and desserts covered! Spendy (though not as bad as Met Mkt) but healthy. If you can find parking on Alki, Pegasus and Sunfish are great options as well.

I’m in the same boat (having our baby on Friday, and we already have a three-year-old @ home) so this question couldn’t have come at a better time. Thanks to whomever asked it, and to all those who provided great suggestions!

  • Jenny June 30, 2007 (11:12 am)

Charlestown Cafe does takeout as well. Once in a while we’ll order their great salads for pickup.

  • Sky Bluesky July 1, 2007 (1:59 pm)

I will happily second the suggestion for Vatsana’s in Westwood. Lightning-fast and very good.

The PCC Deli and the Morgan Junction Thriftways are great for cruising the deli. Also the Thriftway has some great pre-packaged meats for easy baking or grilling. And of course, the Metropolitan has those great pasta dishes. And prime rib sandwiches. And salads. And then there’s the pork loin. And oh, geez, now I’m hungry.

The Majaraja in Alaska Junction is also excellent for take-out.

We’re on 100th, south of Roxbury, and the new Garlic Jim’s will deliver to us. It’s gourmet-type pizza, a la Pagliaccis. The pizza’s decent, not extraordinary, but they’ve got a pretty interesting menu. They’re expanding their delivery area – basically, call and get a delivery from them now, wherever you live. That way, you’re in their computer system, and I’ve been assured that you’ll keep getting deliveries, even if they cut back their delivery area.

Oh, oh, oh, and Endolyne Joe’s does takeout! Even dessert. And they do such a nice job of packing and separating everything, so the sauces won’t get everything gooey and the ice cream can be frozen separately from the bread pudding.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. My baby decided to come early by crashing our 4th of July BBQ. (My water broke as my husband was grilling and we were getting ready to serve dinner to our guests). We went to the hospital, while everyone else stayed and kept the party going. I guess it is nice that the baby was born to the sound of fireworks. Anyway, looking forward to trying lots of the above this summer.

Sorry, comment time is over.
