“Hundreds” of leaping salmon in West Seattle waters

(Lincoln Park photo by WSB contributing photojournalist Christopher Boffoli – we hear the fish are here too)
Just got a note from Sam, who reports seeing “hundreds of salmon … dozens leaping through the air as they feed” at the Harbor Island pier. Checking around online, fishing writer Mark Yuasa at seattletimes.com (WSB partner) reported this week that pink salmon are entering the area “in the millions.”

At least twenty-five people fishing at Lincoln park yesterday afternoon in the Coleman Pool area and they were having LOTS of success! Pinks all over the place…

Please add that it is currently not legal to fish for salmon from Duwamish Head to the 1st Ave S. Bridge. There are very specific regulations for this water (Inner Elliot bay fishery) and everyone should read the regs before heading out.

Also FWIW they aren’t feeding on the surface, no one seems to know why they leap (and pinks do so more than other salmon)but they are no longer feeding at this point.

Thanks, PD, I started wading through that website and haven’t gotten to that specific ban yet – is there a direct link? Thanks! – TR

It’s on page 114 of the 2009-2010 Fishing in Washington Rule Pamphlet, which is unfortunately a big pdf. Here’s a link to the Marine Area Rules section (3 MB pdf). Look for Marine Area 10.

Elliot Bay, Inner Elliot Bay, and the Duwamish Waterway are closed to salmon fishing from August 25 to 31.

Sorry, comment time is over.
