Just got Seattle Public Schools‘ news release about open enrollment starting March 2. It mentions district reps will be at the Delridge Library to take applications March 11, if you’d rather apply in person instead of by mail (or at an out-of-West Seattle location). Read on:

Open Enrollment for the 2009-2010 school year
March 2 – 31, 2009

Seattle – Seattle Public Schools announced that Open Enrollment dates for the 2009-2010 school year begin Monday, March 2 and run through Tuesday, March 31, 2009. Due to the capacity management/building closure process, the enrollment calendar for this year was adjusted from its January – February timeframe to March to ensure that families have time to consider options and to prepare registration and application materials prior to the rescheduled Open Enrollment period. Seattle Public Schools welcomes new and returning families for the 2009-2010 school year. Most schools offer tours and/or information sessions, and this information is available at enrollment centers or on the District web site at www.seattleschools.org/area/eso/schooltours.html.

Families may apply for enrollment during the Open Enrollment period of March 2 – 31, 2009 to receive priority assignment for the 2009-2010 school year. Open Enrollment is the time when families register and apply for school for children entering kindergarten in September 2009, for students going from elementary to middle school or middle to high school next year, for all other students who wish to change schools, and for students who will be new to the district in September 2009.

There are a number of program highlights for the upcoming school year including new international programs at Concord Elementary and Denny Middle schools, and a new K-8 school at the Jane Addams building. The Montessori program at T.T. Minor moves to Leschi Elementary and will expand to K-4 (expanding to K-5 in 2010-2011). In addition, high schools throughout Seattle have increased the number and array of Advanced Placement courses while focused academics and signature programs continue into their second year at Aki Kurose Middle School and Rainier Beach High School (performing arts and media production) and Cleveland High School (science, math and technology).

The new K-8 school at Jane Addams, led by Co-Principals Debbie Nelsen and Christopher Carter, will open in fall 2009 to serve elementary and middle school children in the Northeast cluster. In addition to a rigorous general education program, the K-8 school will offer Spectrum, special education and bilingual services. Music and world languages will be an integral part of the program. On-site before- and after-school childcare will be provided by the Pinehurst Child Care Center. The school will also be offering a full-day Kindergarten with an anticipated fee of $225 per month (subject to change). The fee is waived for students eligible for free/reduced price meals. There will be informational nights held at the Jane Addams building on March 5 and 17 from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.
