West Seattle snow (and ice): Sunday night updates

(refresh/scroll down for the newest information; Monday school changes we have so far – Holy Rosary 10 am start, Holy Family 10 am, Our Lady of Guadalupe 10:30 am, Hope Lutheran 10:30 am, Seattle Lutheran 11 am, Shorewood Christian CLOSED)

(California/Thistle after dark tonight – look close to notice the glistening ice)
Our Sunday morning coverage is here; our Sunday afternoon coverage is here; now it’s time to start a new post for Sunday night – especially as we look ahead to tomorrow, and what conditions will be like as people look ahead to the workweek, and school (the last week before winter break, for most). Keep posting your reports, and sending photos to editor@westseattleblog.com – the information you provide is helping thousands of your West Seattle neighbors stay up to date with what’s happening, particularly important since most accounts suggest our area was hit harder than other parts of the city. Thanks again for your collaboration. First up, another update from the Goulds, reporting on multiple areas in south West Seattle:

Barton Street fairly good. Buses moving up the hill fine. Some folks are still a bit nervous going down, including the buses, so quite a bit of slow going down hill, at times. Did see a another sander and a de-icer truck going up.

It is our sense that the sand is in short supply and they are using it very judiously. It has been very hit and miss where we saw the sand. They may have also been trying to hit the worse spots as quick as they could, covering as much ground as possible, until they had time to do more thorough coverage.

Barton east of 35th – now much better, I followed the sander and de-icer to Target. 35th from Roxbury to Avalon is generally good. Some spots both lanes are not completely clear so folks are trying to avoid the icier lane. Most people do seem to be driving quite sensibily, but you can easily tell who the
folks are that are not having a fun time.

Roxbury – east and down the Olsen Place hill and across the Cloverdale Bridge: Roxbury overall is in better shape than 35th. Olsen Place hill is fine – clear and no apparent problems.

Also for folks interested in Thistle, I saw the sander and de-icer coming east on Thistle, crossing 35th and continuing on. So my guess is, is that Thistle is also in pretty good shape now.

The newest forecast now says “quite cold through next weekend” and flatly declares “SNOW” for next Wednesday; see it here. Another road report now from Kevin in Arbor Heights: “100th west of 35th appears to be sanded but still very slick. I’m a couple of houses south on 42nd SW and our street is just solid ice as most likely the case with all the other side streets.” He says vehicles DO appear to be proceeding slowly and cautiously. However, Meg reports a nearby trouble spot:

There are three cars stranded at the curve on Marine View Dr SW, just south of 45th and Endolyne Joe’s. It’s very slippery on the curve headed South, and on the straight-away part of the hill where you come out of all the foliage. No sand or de-icer truck all day, which is typical, the hill is treacherous.

Updates as we get ’em (photos welcome too – anybody going to the Christmas Ship? – editor@westseattleblog.com) 6:05 PM: Folks are discussing power flickers in the comments – no power outages listed on the city site so far; here’s where they will be, if something big happens (hope not!). 7:39 PM UPDATE: As mentioned in the comments, some people in that area of Morgan Junction lost power entirely. That’s not listed on the city site; we’ll check by phone to see if there’s information on what’s going on. We’d heard from Vlad Oustimovitch, who lives in the area, that his wife Kathryn had called City Light to ask about the microoutages and was told about “20 blocks” were affected by the blickering and that crews were en route. However, now, in addition to the comment here, we also just received a note from someone whose friends near Thriftway are without power. 7:48 PM UPDATE: City Light says the outage is affecting 200 “customers” (which means homes/businesses) between SW Graham north, SW Webster south, 39th SW east, 47th SW west, and says crews are “currently patroling to find the cause of the outage.”

8:10 PM UPDATE: No outage updates yet. Meantime, we’re watching both the Seattle Public Schools site and SchoolReport.org for any school info for tomorrow morning that might affect folks in this area – as we mentioned earlier, though, the district often does not make the decision until early in the morning. It’s also a tough call when the weather conditions don’t affect the city (and therefore the district) uniformly – you may remember a time a few years back when the north end had snowy, icy conditions, while West Seattle was in relatively great shape, but schools were closed anyway because more routes were dangerous around the city than not. One other note – the WSB Forums have a few weather-related topics going, including “what’s better for your driveway/walkway: kitty litter or salt?” Join the conversation here. Good news for bus riders (and drivers who share the road with buses): King County promises buses will be chained tomorrow! (That same link contains other general commute-related info from the county, mostly re: unincorporated areas.)

8:23 PM UPDATE: Just a note while things are relatively quiet – besides watching schools and roads, we are also watching for other information relevant to tomorrow – government agency operation changes, major employers, what have you, so please share that kind of information too if you think it’s of value to more than a few people (comments and/or editor@westseattleblog.com). Besides keeping watch till late tonight, we will of course be updating for the morning commute too, monitoring various sources for West Seattle-specific/relevant road info. Both the city and the county promise to be on their game.

8:50 PM UPDATE: We have paged Seattle City Light media reps in hopes of getting an update on the Morgan/Gatewood outage. If we don’t get any new information soon, we’ll head down the hill (the area is a mile directly north of us) and look for crews. Meanwhile, a photo just in from David Hutchinson, one of many people who contributed great photos earlier today too:

David says, “Just got back from seeing the Christmas Ship near the Don Armeni boat ramp. A small group braved the cold temperatures and wind. The bonfire was appreciated.” Also: Michelle, in comments, reports one West Seattle school change has been announced: Start time for Holy Rosary is 10 am tomorrow. By the way, if you’re looking for the website or phone number for a West Seattle school, we have a fairly comprehensive list (probably missing a few preschools – those are hard to track) on the WSB Schools page.

COVERAGE CONTINUED THROUGH MIDNIGHT – TO SEE THE REST OF IT, CLICK AHEAD:

9:01 PM UPDATE: Katie says in comments that Holy Family in White Center will start at 10 am tomorrow. Also, Our Lady of Guadalupe‘s website says they’re starting at 10:30 am. We’ll put school closures/changes in a separate post shortly, so they are easily accessible as well as reporting them in this general coverage.

9:24 PM UPDATE: City Light’s on-call media person just called. The media team wasn’t paged about the outage because it “started as a cycle,” so that was someone’s “oversight,” and that’s why they weren’t already issuing information about it – although that doesn’t make any difference regarding the repairs; crews are out but she has no further information from the field regarding the cause or the time it’s likely to be restored, though she says that in general, outages that start as “cycles” SHOULD be relatively quickly fixable. Sorry that’s not much help.

9:51 PM UPDATE: Chris writes in comments: “I just saw a City Light worker trudging down SW Myrtle – on foot since the hill east of California is impassable to emergency vehicles due to ice – flashlight in hand and looking at power lines and transformers. He got back in his truck and moved south to Orchard.”

10:10 PM UPDATE: Ten minutes later, Chris reported power back at California/Myrtle. Hope that is true for everyone involved. City Light hadn’t updated its info as of our last check minutes ago. (Added) Two more reports of restored power are in. We will do our best to find out from City Light staffers tomorrow what the cause was. On another note, de-icer truck and plow just headed eastbound on Thistle from California. The city said all 18 of its crews will work all night.

10:23 PM UPDATE: Some West Seattleites send their kids via ferry to Vashon schools – so we’re noting that Vashon is reporting it’s starting 2 hours late tomorrow.

10:35 PM UPDATE: Just in from Lou Magor at Kenyon Hall:

Despite the chill in the weather, the Monday, December 15 Cambialaria Concert will go on as scheduled, at 7:30 in the evening. Reservations are not needed. There is no admission charge; tax-deductible donations will help the world’s poor. Come hear Scott Warrender’s elegant ensemble in a Christmas treat that’ll warm your heart. Complimentary refreshments will be served. Doors open at 7.

Since from what we’ve seen and heard, much of the rest of the city isn’t dealing with the kind of road woes we have over here, we doubt the weather will affect some big events of WS interest the next few nights, but will be checking anyway. For starters, tomorrow night is the Town Hall public forum on the proposed Alaskan Way Viaduct scenarios (5-7:30 pm); we plan to be there (archived Viaduct coverage here).

10:38 PM UPDATE: More school changes – Hope Lutheran will start at 10:30 am. Also, Seattle Lutheran High School will start at 11 am. Kennedy High School in Burien is starting at 10:30 am. Interesting video find via an odd link on our Twitter page – KING5 “raw video” interviewing bus drivers who got stuck in West Seattle today (near Westwood Village, looks like).

11:04 PM UPDATE: Just got a note from Seattle Public Schools – but NOT the decision about tomorrow (yet); instead, a media refresher on how they make their decision and how it is communicated. New “School Messenger” apparently will call families with automated messages, in addition to decision getting posted on SPS website, SchoolReport.org, etc.

11:31 PM UPDATE: We’ll keep watch here about another hour before a short overnight break, with morning-commute coverage starting around 5 am.

12:56 AM UPDATE: Another school note: Shorewood Christian School is closed, per recording on office phone. Still no Seattle Public Schools decision posted.

Our power keeps going out and coming back on seconds later. 7000 block of California, near California/Myrtle. Anyone else experiencing this?

  • cruiser December 14, 2008 (5:34 pm)

YIP, on Gatewood hill too Holly/40th

  • Lisa K. December 14, 2008 (5:42 pm)

Am I crazy to attempt to get to the Christmas ship at Don Armeni from the Delridge area? Had to go to Admiral Junction about an hour ago, and got there fine–Delridge and Admiral up from the bridge are in good shape, all things considered. What about Harbor Ave?

  • kae December 14, 2008 (5:44 pm)

Hey Aaron, our power went out three times in the last 30 minutes or so, we’re at California & Orchard. What’s the dealio?

  • Bree December 14, 2008 (5:45 pm)

Has anyone been down California Ave lately by the PCC? Also, I think it would be great if we could start a carpooling list for people, like me, who don’t have 4 wheel drive but still want to get into work at a decent hour.

  • Gatewood Mom December 14, 2008 (5:47 pm)

We live in Arbor Heights and it has been very slick all day. Most streets are great for sledding but bad for driving. My husband works in Westwood and is planning to walk to work tomorrow. No sense in risking it when we live so close.

  • WSB December 14, 2008 (5:53 pm)

Bree – I would suggest that could be a good thing to start in the WSB Forums. We have a “private message” feature that you can use to communicate with other users if somebody turns out to have a schedule that matches with yours. If you do decide to start that in the forum, please come back and post the link as another comment here and that way it will be seen by folks who might not check the forum otherwise.

  • CarolPB December 14, 2008 (5:58 pm)

Anyone know how Delridge is? I’m in Highland Park and am supposed to go to work on top of Queen Anne Hill tomorrow. Or I could go Roxbury to 1st South Bridge if I hear that is a better choice. Thanks to all

  • Lisa K. December 14, 2008 (6:01 pm)

Delridge is fine now, but tomorrow may be a different story.

  • Chris December 14, 2008 (6:01 pm)

Five short (under 10 second) power failures at California and Myrtle (7000 block of California) within the past hour . . .

  • add December 14, 2008 (6:02 pm)

Hmm – also on Gatewood Hill (39th just south of Morgan) – no flickering or outages … yet??

  • hopey December 14, 2008 (6:04 pm)

I just got back from the Roxbury/509 route to the airport, starting near Roxbury & 35th. NO PROBLEMS. Seriously. About 80% of the pavement is dry. Once out on the main streets, I did not encounter any of the thick, treacherous ice which currently blankets the side streets in my neighborhood.

I had absolutely no trouble with the grade inbetween 35th and White Center. The grade between White Center and Olson Way had a bit of snow and ice on it, but only a thin layer and very manageable. The grade down to Myers Way was completely cleared and dry, as was all of 509 and 518.

The real issue seems to be getting out of the neighborhood side streets. Once you are out, it’s not a big deal.

  • p December 14, 2008 (6:08 pm)

Came back to WS from working in the U district all day, WS Bridge is fine, and 35th is not bad until about the 5000 block, then it gets a bit more icy. 106th is a total mess, solid ice. I am still surprised by all the people in 4 wheel drive that think it works perfect on ice….
Just remember, slow and easy and it should be fine. I did hear that Cap Hill was icy, but got better as the day went on, same with First hill and Queen Anne Hill. I work at a coffee shop in the U that is a stop for Metro Drivers. Heard lots of interesting stories today!

  • dinah December 14, 2008 (6:14 pm)

I’m off of Cloverdale across from the West Crest Dog Park and the roads are totally iced in. I understand 9th ave is clear, but many people can’t get up their street and down Cloverdale.

    Bummer!

  • Rene December 14, 2008 (6:23 pm)

I live down by Lowman Beach. Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to get to White Center?

I can’t believe I’m even asking this since I’m used to driving in snow and ice, just not on hills.

  • datamuse December 14, 2008 (6:24 pm)

Yeah the side streets around Highland Park are in pretty bad shape, I went for a walk this afternoon and saw a lot of skidding and sliding.

9th itself looks pretty good though, mostly clear and even dry in spots.

  • Maia December 14, 2008 (6:31 pm)

If you need to get to/near Westwood tonight, Thistle is a good option. I drove from 35th to Thistle, down to 24th and over to Trenton. No 4WD.

  • p December 14, 2008 (6:34 pm)

WSB, I sure hope you are skipping the gas price check tonight.. If you need to know, I saw the following today, Costco on 4th, 1.87 for premium, Ruxbury Gas 1.91 for prem., Safeway on Roxbury, 2.05 for prem, and 2.10 for prem at the 35th Ave SW Chevron. Sorry I only use prem in my car…

  • lg December 14, 2008 (6:39 pm)

@ 6:40 snow plow sighted going east on charlestown at 53rd. Not plowing but spreading sand/salt whatever it is that they use.

  • Jen P December 14, 2008 (6:49 pm)

Is the power out for good now after those 8 or so brief outages??? (Morgan Junction)

  • Manuel W. December 14, 2008 (6:55 pm)

Just got back from Thriftway. Store kept going pitch black for 30 seconds every 5 minutes. Lights pop back on, various alarms sound, back to business. They seem to have a backup generator providing backup lighting and cash register functionality.

As I left the store it went out one last time and hasn’t come back on for 10 mins now. Traffic light at Morgan & California is out. Everything I can see S of Morgan and W of Calif. is blacked out. McDonalds, Thriftway, houses.

  • Aaron December 14, 2008 (7:06 pm)

Power now officially out at California/Myrtle area. Hope they to get to it quickly so we can get the heat back on.

  • Alex December 14, 2008 (7:07 pm)

From the scanner it sounds like the power is out in the area from California and Fauntleroy to Othello and two blocks east and west.

  • HuskyCoug December 14, 2008 (7:08 pm)

Power finally decided to go out at California and Willow St after flickering off and on about 6 times. Fun fun!

  • zero-to-life in West Seattle December 14, 2008 (7:11 pm)

Just got a call from my husband who left our home in the Westwood neighborhood heading to Ballard. He said that once he got past Home Depot on Delridge it was clear sailing. No ice on the bridge, no ice on the viaduct. Glad to hear that Thistle has been sanded, that was the last thing I was nervous about-thanks Maia!

  • Helen December 14, 2008 (7:11 pm)

I’m on 18th and Juneau and boy howdy was 18th a lovely ice rink today…but, my husband had to go to work tonight, and he got to work with no problems. He went south on 18th, got on Delridge at Orchard, and took the lower bridge. No problems at all. And thankfully, no power flickering here either.

  • Ez December 14, 2008 (7:15 pm)

    Thriftway is without power now.

  • Chris December 14, 2008 (7:17 pm)

Half an hour since the lights went out and stayed out at California and Myrtle. Seattle City Light’s recorded message claimed to be aware of the flickering outage (Graham to Webster? 37th to 47th or so) and claimed to involve 200 customers, the only listed outage. I reported the new total outage. City Light was delayed by having to chain up the tires on their trucks to deal with West Seattle’s icy roads.

  • Jen P December 14, 2008 (7:36 pm)

Can someone post when the power is back on at the Morgan Junction? I’m currently camped out with two toddlers at my parents’ house 4 blocks away.

  • Dustin December 14, 2008 (7:37 pm)

Major roads in Shorewood are better than they were this morning. SW 106th between 35th and 26th is still tricky, but at least it’s not an ice sheet anymore. 26th itself is looking okay. All side streets though are horrible. Just walked from 28th Ave SW and SW 107th St. up 26th Ave. north a few blocks and even the side walks are like skating rinks.

  • CMP December 14, 2008 (7:40 pm)

I just drove back from Portland and it wasn’t as bad as I thought. I was pretty surprised to see how icy the Junction is (Fauntleroy and California)…probably the worst conditions I encountered all day driving around PDX and the way home. I’ve seen people driving the regular speed limit along California and I wish they’d slow down with all of the parked cars and not ideal conditions. I’m taking the bus to work tomorrow for sure!

  • Janet December 14, 2008 (7:45 pm)

Spot to avoid: At 9 am this morning, some genius abandoned his car in the middle of the road on Graham just East of Fauntleroy – it’s still there tonight, blocking all traffic and all the parked cars. Glad to not have our cars slammed into, but geez, I sure am missing the 3:30 massage I had scheduled this afternoon!

  • rykrite December 14, 2008 (7:51 pm)

I’m compulsively checking the Seattle Schools closure info, and they haven’t posted yet…ugh. Even if schools are open, I’m not sure I’d be able to get my kindergartener to school: we live near the West Seattle Nursery and she attends Alki. Walking around the Junction today I was surprised by how everything is a sheet of ice, and in those conditions I don’t find driving worth the risk. Thank goodness for urban villages – I was grateful to be able to walk to pick up milk etc today. (Oh, and hot lunch at EBB was great, too.)

  • Irene Gendron December 14, 2008 (7:56 pm)

We are in the 6900 block on California Avenue and the power has been fine here all evening.

  • WSB December 14, 2008 (7:57 pm)

As we mentioned earlier, Seattle often does not make the call till early am. I’m sure they’re trying to decide between delay and cancellation. Meantime, schoolreport.org has switched entirely to the all-closure home page, though mostly districts and private schools outside the metro area so far, but they update as they get it, SOMETIMES it might show up there first (I used to be the school-closure info czar during snow mornings at the tv station so I am versed in the ways) …
    http://www.schoolreport.org/

  • WSB December 14, 2008 (8:03 pm)

Irene – City Light outage boundaries aren’t always spot-on, because different buildings/homes/businesses are on different feeders/circuits/etc. If everyone within the listed boundaries was without power, that would be many more than 200 homes/businesses. Thanks for the updates – we’ll hear about the outage’s end from area residents long before we hear it from the utility, most likely, so reports are most welcome.

  • rykrite December 14, 2008 (8:03 pm)

Thanks so much WSB. I’m using your links, and hitting “refresh” despite my knowledge that it probably won’t show until early morning. Ah well, it’s as entertaining as “House” which is on right now in front of me…

  • Bill December 14, 2008 (8:10 pm)

Ok people, just because the power is out doesn’t mean I can’t see you letting your dogs poop in my yard! Anyone else who lives on holly should be aware of the guy walking his great dane. He has a navy blue jacket and a wool hat with green stripes.

  • sharonn December 14, 2008 (8:11 pm)

Do not attempt 37th Avenue S. W. from Mount St. Vincent down the hill to reach Alaska Street. Several jack knifed cars tonight. Too steep to drive up or down this hill.

  • don ross December 14, 2008 (8:26 pm)

Has anyone thought of calling City Hall and complaining about the lack of sanding trucks instead of just complaining on the blog? Just wondering…

  • Cbp December 14, 2008 (8:35 pm)

Anyone have an update on the power outage? Thx.

  • WSB December 14, 2008 (8:45 pm)

I’ve left a message on the City Light 24-hour media line, which supposedly will page a media rep. If we can’t get an update shortly that way, we will make our way down the hill and look for crews, which is always Plan B in case of power crises, though it’s been a while since one coincided with road woes.

  • Michelle Porth December 14, 2008 (8:47 pm)

Just checked the Holy Rosary website and school is starting at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning.

  • d. December 14, 2008 (8:49 pm)

…now for a really important question…is anyone delivering pizza?

  • Cbp December 14, 2008 (8:50 pm)

    Thanks!

  • WSB December 14, 2008 (8:55 pm)

Thanks, Michelle. Have added that to the main text above as well (and important info that comes in here, we are also sending out via Twitter – road closures, school changes, etc.)

  • Katie December 14, 2008 (8:58 pm)

Holy Family, in White Center is going to start at 10:00 A.M. tomorrow

  • WSB December 14, 2008 (9:09 pm)

I’ll start a separate school changes post shortly as well as posting everything we find out in the main text too. OLG has posted a 10:30 am start on its website. So far no changes posted online for the other major local private schools, nor for Seattle Public Schools.

  • Evan December 14, 2008 (9:11 pm)

I’d like to know why this particular section of WS keeps losing power. I’m on a corner, and neighbors across the street on both sides have their lights on, which is the way these outages always seem to work. This is the third winter in a row that we’ve had a significant outage, and I’m really losing patience. It’s just hard to understand how the problem could keep reoccurring in the same location, unless there’s some faulty piece of equipment or something. I can’t tell you how maddening it is to be freezing in the dark while every house you can see from your window is lit up and warm.

  • Chris December 14, 2008 (9:27 pm)

I just saw a City Light worker trudging down SW Myrtle–on foot since the hill east of California is impassable to emergency vehicles due to ice–flashlight in hand and looking at power lines and transformers. He got back n his truck and moved south to Orchard.

  • Cbp December 14, 2008 (9:31 pm)

@ my in laws watching family guy a few blocks from a dark, cold house. Is the power back?

  • Luke December 14, 2008 (9:38 pm)

we got a pizza from pagliacci’s earlier tonight.

  • Chris December 14, 2008 (10:04 pm)

Power back at SW Myrtle and California (7000) at 10:01pm.

  • M December 14, 2008 (10:04 pm)

Any word on Highland Park Way? I imagine it is closed, but I have not been out very far today.

  • Ez December 14, 2008 (10:13 pm)

Morgan Junction lights are now back on.

  • cami December 14, 2008 (10:23 pm)

Does anyone know if Admiral Way (between 63rd and California) has been plowed or sanded? After our experience on this stretch today (around 1pm), I’m not sure if I can get my kid to Madison in the morning!

  • Giyen December 14, 2008 (10:23 pm)

For those families that commute over to vashon school district … as of this evening, school is starting 2 hours late. This means catching the 8:20 am ferry and be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to the ferry dock. : )

  • WSB December 14, 2008 (10:24 pm)

Thanks, Giyen – I was literally adding that info to the post at the same minute you were filing the comment; we know at least one WS family whose son “commutes” to Vashon.

  • cjboffoli December 14, 2008 (10:33 pm)

I just came back from walking my friend home and man do I wish I brought a video camera along. We were standing at the corner of Edmunds and 40th when we saw a white Ford F150 turn down onto the steep part of Edmunds as it leads down towards Fauntleroy. I saw what was coming and we were right in the line of fire so we got well out of the way. His wheels were locked up almost instantly and by the time he was half-way down the hill he was sideways. That guy had to be among the luckiest in West Seattle tonight as the truck narrowly missed a utility pole and came to rest, completely unscathed, at the bottom of the hill, turned 180 degrees from the direction he started in. With that he gingerly and sheepishly drove up 40th towards Alaska.

Has anyone made the trip this morning from Highland Park area to California? I’m trying to figure out if it’s possible to get to work. I’m thinking Roxbury to 35th to Morgan then California. Any comments on that route would be appreciated!!

  • Karen December 22, 2008 (8:36 am)

Anyone know of a snow removal service? We are in Gatewood Hill.

Sorry, comment time is over.
