West Seattle Junction Car Show update

Thanks to Mark B. Bauschke for those photos with a closer look at a few of the cars gracing California between Edmunds and the post office (closed to traffic except for the cross streets) right now during the first-ever West Seattle Junction Car Show, continuing till 4 pm. We also received this cameraphone photo from somebody – nostalgic to us, since Dad had a T-Bird like this one in the early ’60s:

When we checked with one of the organizers, Liberty Bell Printing’s Michael Hoffman, about participants we might interview before the show, he mentioned West Seattleite Gordie Ryun, calling him “the reason we have a Car Show … (he) has had this idea for several years.” We didn’t catch up with him in advance but found him and his car at the show today.

Here’s video of Gordie telling the story behind his “T-Bucket”:

If you have any pictures you’d care to share, send ’em along (and be sure to let us know how you want to be credited) – we’ll post more tonight.

Hey Gordie! Didn’t know you were playing such a role today…way to go!

    What a great show!

Got there about 12:15, and stayed an hour and half or so. Saw a couple friends and their cars, saw the cars of a couple other friends’ cars but not the friends.

And the weather actually cooperated! Just a few sprinkles shortly after I got there.

    and Mike…you’re out and about…freedom !!!!!

  • miws September 21, 2008 (5:21 pm)

    Yes! It was great!

I was going to catch the bus, but got a ride from a couple of friends that wanted to go too.

Got a good workout scooting along with the walker.

The car show was great–any show that has Plymouths has my vote–here’s hoping it will become an annual event.

Did anyone get to witness the tool of a guy with a toddler in his arms trying to get one of the car owners to fight with him? It was about noon, near the north end, and it just goes to show the world is full of those who feel the rules don’t apply to them. He was totally pissed off that the car owner had the audacity to ask/tell him to stop touching his car. It was hilarious!

Patrick shot our photos/video while I was recovering from an all-night project, and he ran into someone who told him about that – TR

  • JimmyG September 21, 2008 (7:21 pm)

Too bad Patrick didn’t get some video of the guy yelling Ford insults.

Seriously, I was standing there laughing to realize that he was in such a complete rage over being told to stop touching the car.

(And you need to stop pulling all-nighters TR, they age you before your time. I know them all too well.)

Oh, thanks, but I’ve been doing that for 30 years now, since my first fulltime DJ job at age 18, midnight-6, six nights a week, three bucks an hour … almost everything I’ve done in media has resulted in all-nighters at some point, including my first role at my last TV station, executive producer of the morning news. I’m a night person anyway. And some say I don’t look quite my age … maybe closer to … uh … 47 … HA! :)

Thanks to those who brought their cars and welcome back anytime!

The cars were beautiful and brought back lots of memories. And thankfully my two young boys listened to the no touch rule.

How great to have the two block stretch in the junction totally walkable. Had lunch and ice cream at Husky Deli. Fun day.

  • Erik September 21, 2008 (8:58 pm)

    Ford insults, lol.

And, 47 is a great age!

My son and I spent about an hour looking at the cars today and both had a great time! He’s almost five years old and couldn’t stop saying “that’s so cool!” and “that’s awesome!” (and he didn’t even touch any cars!). We also hit up Husky for ice cream. Thanks to all the organizers and participants for such a fun event!

Got to the show at about 2:45 and all the cars were still there, although some left right after the awards were announced. I saw a trio of elderly men, who had to be in their eighties, drooling over the ’55 red and white Chevy pickup, telling stories of ‘back in the day.’ They were so cute. Jimmy G and kc, I hear ya about the people with no clue. An old friend with several restored vehicles was the one who orginally told me about the no touch rule at car shows. I’m always so aware of that when looking into the beautiful chrome and mirror-bright paint jobs, I hold my sweater or jacket against me so that jean rivets, buttons and zippers don’t touch either. This was a great way to spend a Sunday. Hope they do it again next year, or sooner.

Erik, I think any age is a great age. Just happy to be here (on the planet). As for Fords … my first car, 1977, was a Maverick. White 4-door, 302 V8, which was great for getting between Vegas (where I lived at the time) and LA, um, a lot faster than, oh, say the cars of today. But it was quite the lemon. Fix or repair daily, found on road dead, I heard (and agreed with) it all! Though I do wish two classic cars from earlier years in my family had stayed in the family … my grandma had a ’66 Mustang … my aunt had a beautiful ’56 white porthole removable-top T-Bird. Sigh.

What time did it end / why were 2 blocks of the junction still closed at 5 PM on Sunday with no cars to look at? Very frustrating to get detoured around when there was absolutely nothing going on, on CA between Oregon and Edmunds.. No people or cars or anything except pavement. WTH!?

  • bob September 22, 2008 (9:35 am)

To wsratsinacage, the show was over at 4 and most cars were gone by 445 the barriers were to be picked up by 500 next time we will leave some cheese to go with your whine.

Great show overall. I did bring the Falcon van down and found the whole scene very friendly to in progress vintage driver cars. The hosting club did an excellent job with their organization of the event and kudos to those volunteers who made it all happen. Looking forward to next year!

Well, I guess I was the only one in WS that was inconvenienced by having 2 blocks of a main arterial closed for no reason after the event was over. Just asking a (reasonable) question.. Call it whinning if you must. How the F was I supposed to know it was over 15 minutes before I happened by? Jeez. Such friendly folks ’round these parts. BLO w Goats!

Had a great time entering the car show. I thought the show was well organized and the volume of the music was not over powering. Tophies were very cool too. GOOD JOB to the maple valley car club. See ya next year.

Sorry, comment time is over.
