WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Two early-morning armed robberies (updated)

8:26 AM: The (corrected) Shell station at 4580 Fauntleroy Way SW was held up early today, according to a police summary:

At 2:20 a.m., patrol officers responded to reports of a robbery in the 4500 block of Fauntleroy Way Southwest. There, police determined that four masked men, driving a stolen Hyundai Sonata, robbed a gas station clerk at gunpoint, stealing between $500-600 cash. The suspects fled the scene in the car before officers arrived. Police searched the area, but they could not find the suspects, and no arrests were made. Officers collected evidence and processed the scene. The clerk did not report any injuries.

Anyone with information is asked to call the violent crimes tip line at 206-233-5000.

Incident Number: 2026-59491

In archived police-radio audio, the car was described further only as “dark” and the robbers were described further only as “wearing dark clothing.”

5:41 PM: Turns out a second armed robbery happened minutes later – called in at 2:23 am – likely the same robbers, at the California/Erskine 7-11. Thanks to commenter MercyMoi for pointing this out; we listened back to audio archives, and the radio traffic was co-mingled with radio traffic on the Shell station holdup, and SPD has not posted a summary yet about this one, but the robbers – also described only as masked, in dark clothing – were last seen “southbound on California.”

FYI that Gas Station is a Shell station, NOT a 76. The 76 gas station is at 4001 California Ave SW.

    That’s a shell station

ust to clarify if this is getting really confusing to anyone else- what we are talking about here looks like the Shell Station on Fauntleroy Way SW, where it intersects with Alaska Way. close to  TJs, Schwab etc.   There are two ’76 stations I know of – one is on the 7400 block of SW Fauntleroy Way SW- near Lincoln Park. The other is 4001 California Ave SW – just north of the Alaska Junction @ Andover.

4580 Fauntleroy is the Shell gas station across from Trader Joe’s. Sorry for the original mistake, but I did fix it almost an hour before your comment after others pointed it out.

Saw what appeared to be a stolen/dumped black Hyundai Sonata in my neighborhood (Pigeon Point). Reported it to police.

Robbed a couple of years ago and covered by WSB.

The good folks at the Erskine/California 7-Eleven said they got robbed at gunpoint last night by four masked men, too.

On one hand it’s odd that SPD public affairs wouldn’t include that, but listening again to the audio I think I see where it got lost in the traffic – it was almost concurrent with the call for the Fauntleroy Way Shell station, with a similar description, but that explains why they said the robbers were “last seen heading south on California,” which didn’t make sense previously in the context of the Fauntleroy/Alaska Shell station. Too late in the day for me to get the report but will add a short mention – TR

I wonder why SPD doesn’t utilized SDOT & WSDOT live feed cameras for instances like this to see where the vehicle may be headed ? Many times it seems the criminals hop onto the West Seattle Bridge to never be caught. Seems SPD could & should utilize these live feed cameras to track the vehicles down after description is given & when barely any vehicles are out on the roads at this hour.

Why would you think they don’t? That’s what the RTCC routinely does. But there’s usually a delay before the victims call 911, then some time to get a description from them, and by that time the robbers might be miles away.
